Start 10.30am, finish 12.30pmResults Preview and course profile Next stage Van Hout takes first day honoursBy Rod Morris South Australian rider Russell Van Hout claimed first day honours with an impressive win Stage 1 of the Skilled Tour of Tasmania today (Feb. 27). Hobart to Kingston - just 10 km away - doesn't sound too much trouble, but when you add a further 87 km and intermediate sprints through Margate, Cygnet and Huonville and a field of 75 top class riders pushing the limits, then things take on a different perspective. Van Hout (25) from Tea Tree Gully in SA won the opening stage ahead of Rio Coffee SA teammate, Luke Roberts, who is no stranger to Tasmania, having won the Latrobe Wheelrace as a teenager. Third across the line was talented NSW youngster Ashley Humbert, who has also tasted previous success in Tasmania, having won a national medal at the 2000 Australian Junior Road Championships in Sheffield. The opening stage of the Tour of Tasmania had a little bit of everything. There were three intermediate sprints, two climbs in the Wrest Point King of the Mountain Championship, predominant sunshine with a splattering of rain, perfect scenery and generous crowd support dotted along the highways. Van Hout celebrated his first trip to the Apple Isle in winning style. "It wasn't easy out there, particularly the last 25 km when I was just trying to hang on," he said. Van Hout was part of several breakaway challenges early in the race, but almost were reeled in by cautious teams before too much damage was done. "My teammates worked hard right throughout the stage and I think that is evident by us running first and second." Tasmanian riders also enjoyed the opening day with newly crowned Australian Mountain Bike champion Sid Taberlay claiming the lead in the Wrest Point King of the Mountain Championship. Taberlay won the first KOM climb near Nicholls Rivulet and then finished third in the second KOM at Lower Longley. The green Country Club Sprint Ace jersey went to Victorian Jayco Under 23 rider David Pell, who featured in all three intermediate sprints, claiming a win at Margate, third at Cygnet and second at Huonville.
