Day 6 - February 6

Victory for McGrory/Gilmore

It was an intense final night in Copenhagen! The Danish home crowd were hoping for their boys in pair number seven to take home the first victory in the newly constructed Siemens Arena.

The Swiss megastars Risi and Betschart had their minds and legs set for another result, though. They started the first pursuit of the evening in a frantic pace, gaining the one lap they were down. Importantly, Rolf Sørensen and Silvio Martinello managed to squeeze home the ten points they needed to get the 'bonus' lap. 200 points on the scorecard was the result of the first pursuit for the Italian/Danish constellation, who are on level laps with pairs number six and seven.

Who would have the best legs in the final pursuit? The Danes, the Swiss or perhaps the veterans Sørensen and Martinello?

Before the final pursuit, however, a moved Etienne Dewilde said his goodbyes to the packed arena. The Copenhagen Six is Dewilde's last official race, and he was honoured by standing ovations from the crowd and the other riders.

With 30 minutes to go of the Copenhagen Six, the pursuit had turned into a man's contest between the top four pairs: 5, 6, 7 and 10. Gilmore/McGrory had a single point's advantage over Sandstød/Madsen, but as a special feature in the final pursuit, points would be up for grabs for every ten laps during the last 50 laps of the contest.

Rolf Sørensen tried to break through with 20 minutes left in the race, but he couldn't hammer the last nail in the proverbial coffin – pairs number 6, 7 and 10 just wouldn't have it! Thus, it looked like a home victory with only a quarter of an hour to go.

But it ended otherwise! The massive strength of McGrory and Gilmore proved decisive. Seven minutes before the end, they gained the vital lap, and they finished in top spot, the Danes coming in second, and the Swiss supermen third.
