Live Report

The second event on today's program is the U23 (Espoirs) Men's time trial, held over two laps of a 16.8 km course, similar to the one that the Junior Women rode. Favourites for this race include Manuel Quinziato (Italy), Sandro Güttinger (Swi), and Ukranians Yuriy Krivtsov and Yaroslav Popovych. Swedish hope Petter Renäng has a light fever, and swollen glands of some sort, and will not race.

13:30 GMT
Polish rider Lukasz Bodnar has set a time of 7:33.92 over the first 4.5 kilometres. He was one of the final riders to leave in the first wave, and is 3.3 seconds in front of Swede Gustav Larsson at the same point.

13:45 GMT
After 16.5 kilometres, things have changed slightly, with Portuguese hope Hernani Broco leading Larsson by 0.7 seconds, with Bodnar dropping to third. USA's Mike Creed has moved up from 10th to 5th place.

13:49 GMT
Broco continues to ride well past the third time check, clocking 32:07.92 for 21.5 kilometres. He may be overtaken by riders in the second and third waves, but it is a spirited ride from the local hope.

14:05 GMT
As Broco finishes his ride in 48:33.10, the first rider in the second wave passes the 4.5 kilometre check as the fastest yet. Colombian Luis Felipe Laverde Jimenez is through in 7:27, and the times look set to go much lower.

14:25 GMT
Italian Michele Scarponi is marginally quicker than Ukranian Yuriy Krivstov after 4.5 kilometres. Krivstov is the last rider of the second wave to start, with the third wave due at 14:50 GMT.

14:39 GMT
South African James Perry is riding well in the latter half of the event, setting the quickest times at 16.7 km and 21.5 km. He looks to be the first to go under Broco's time.

14:46 GMT
Perry is weathering the storm from behind, and looks to be the fastest in this second wave of riders. Scarponi doesn't look as though he'll catch the South African in the final 12 kilometres, and neither does Krivstov.

15:00 GMT
As the first riders from the third and final wave set off, South African James Perry holds the quickest time at the finish: 47:08.70 for 33.7 kilometres. An average speed of 42.9 km/h, which gives an indication of how tough this course is.

15:20 GMT
All the second wave riders have finished, and Perry is still on top. Now the final 18 riders have left, and the winner should come from these.

15:30 GMT
Pre-race favourite Manuel Quinziato was slightly off the pace after 4.5 kilometres, losing 5 seconds to Belgian Jurgen van Goolen. However, this is no great indication of his final time, as Nicole Cooke showed earlier in the women's event.

American Danny Pate looks on track to go under James Perry's time. He is ahead of Van Goolen andPopovych after 21.5 kilometres, and is now a real contender for the World Title.

15:42 GMT
Danny Pate (USA) holds the fastest time of the entire U23 field after 21.5 kilometres, with the last rider, Quinziato 52 seconds down in 9th spot at that point. Pate still hasn't recorded a finish time yet, but he shouldn't lose too much time over the final 12 kilometres. Watch out for Popyvych though.

15:46 GMT
German Sebastian Lang has beaten James Perry's final time by one second, although there are three riders better than him in the intermediate splits. Portuguese Sergio Paulinho may become the first medalist for the home country - could it be gold?

Pate comes across in 46:29 - smashing Lang's time by nearly 40 seconds.

15:50 GMT
Sergio Paulinho lost too much time over the last 12 km, and finishes fourth fastest for the time being. Realistically, only Popyvych can beat Danny Pate.

15:55 GMT
Popyvych fades as well, finishing behind Pate, Lang and Perry. The gold medal goes to Danny Pate in a time of 46:29.35 (43.49 km/h)
