World Track Championships - CMAntwerpen, Belgium , September 26 - 30, 2001Main Page Results Photos Next Day's Results Day 1 - September 26by Roger Hughes  The opening day of the world championships in the substantially renovated Antwerp Sportpaleis was run off in front of a disappointingly small crowd, dwarfed in the 12 000 seater barn of a building. Men's 1 km time trialWith four French riders in the finals including defending three-time champion Arnaud Tournant in the competition - the only final contested on day 1 -it was not a great surprise that the Marseillaise was the first national anthem to echo round the Sportpaleis, to the clear delight of the strong tricolour wielding and wearing contingent. They had a first opportunity to celebrate when New Caledonian Herve Gane was the first rider under 1.04, setting the pace for a while; a cluster of 1.03s followed but without anybody getting under Gane's time until Poland's Grzegorz Krejner rode what might have been the best final lap of the night to push the Frenchman into second place by a handful of thousandths of a second. His time looked good, but Germany's Soren Lausberg was up to the task; however, Tournant, starting last, was in a class of his own, nearly a second faster than all of them in a winning time of 1.02.571. His apparent mastery of the track was only slightly marred by his falling off on the warmdown lap as he took his helmet off - fortunately nothing serious and it was all smiles as French coach Daniel Morelon picked him up off the floor. Women's sprintThe host nation got off to a sorry start when Ingeborg Marx - hastily recruited into cycling on the way home from the Sydney Olympics where she competed as a weightlifter - managed to lose count of the wind-up laps for the qualifying flying 200 m TT and started her sprint a lap too late; however, she has a chance to make amends in the half-kilometre. Another surprising non-qualifier was Oceanian champion Rochelle Gilmore (Australia). The first round of sprinting proper mainly ran to form, although Hungary's Szilvia Szabolcsi took a notable scalp in the form of Magali Faure; Grankovskaia, Meinke, Muenzer, Thomas, Meares. Vypyraylo, Panzer and Larreal all also won their heats, with Reed, Markovnichenko and Yanovych getting a second chance through the repechage. In the first match of the second round, Markovnichenko earnt herself a reprimand for riding off her line as she held Meinke high on the final banking, but the result was allowed to stand. Lori Muenzer just edged out Jennie Reed in a very straightforward ride, while Tammy Thomas and Daniela Larreal looked to have some old grudges to settle with a rather more ostentatiously aggressive match; Thomas took it comfortably coming over the Venezuelan on the last banking. Riding against Susann Panzer, Kerrie Meares made the mistake of laying too far off the German's wheel and couldn't get back up to her when she led out. Szabolcsi looked, if not exactly effortless, very convincing against Vypyraylo, taking it from the front, while Yanovych got her nose in front of fastest qualifier Grankovskaia on the last banking, but couldn't keep it there on the straight - however, Grankovskaia was relegated by the referee (a new official position, replacing the old appeal-to-the-jury system). In the first of two repechage matches, Grankovskaia was however able to take it from the front ahead of Larreal and Vypyraylo, while Meinke was also a fairly comfortable qualifier ahead of Reed and Meares.
