This course is 60 kilometres in length and travels to North Tumbulgum before turning back out to Numinbah via Chillingham and then back to the finish at Dulguigan. The course itself is only flat for the first 20 kilometres and the last five kilometres with plenty of undulating roads and testing climbs in between for good measure! A Grade this week had just four riders who set out at a steady pace into a strong head wind. They were caught by the following B Grade bunch on the flat part of the course but moved on once the hills were reached. The pace was lifted considerably after this with Tony Brindle showing the way over most of the climbs. One rider succumbed to the pace but the remaining riders stayed together to fight out a sprint finish. First home was Ruben Roberts with Tony Brindle second and Graham Harvey in third place. The B Grade bunch of six riders set out at a quick pace and proceeded to play cat and mouse with A Grade across the flat part of the course. Once A Grade pulled away this group settled into a steady rhythm with a number of riders stretching the elastic from time to time. None of these efforts were successful though and a bunch sprint was the order of the day. Lindsay Smith was first across the line after a strong sprint with Steve Gibbs close behind for second place and Scott McConnell taking a well deserved third place. Despite the windy conditions the eight riders in C Grade made a real race of it. A quick start was followed by a series of attacks through the hills which stretched everyone's legs but determined riding saw this group remain basically intact until the finish. Kevin Brindle produced a good turn of speed to be first home with Stuart Ellick second, Stuart Chambers third and Jim Collins in fourth spot. In D Grade an early break by Stan Brims split up the six riders in this group for the remainder of the race. A further three riders managed to bridge the gap to Brims but a relentless pace in the windy conditions saw two of these riders dropped at Chillingham after 45 kilometres of racing. This left just Brims and Sandra Bury to contest the finish but a rejuvenated Brims rode away over the final few kilometres to take the win. Sandra Bury was second home after a great ride with Dennis Burger third and Jim Higgins in fourth place. Just three riders contested the 45 kilometre E Grade race. These riders shared the work well in the difficult conditions but in the final shake up Bill Mustard was too strong for the other riders and took first place with Kevin LeRoy second and Stuart Halls in third place. Racing next week is the last monthly handicap for this season over the out and back Tyalgum course. Start time is 2.00pm from Dulguigan and riders are asked to be early to assist the handicapper. Exciting racing took place under a magnificent blue sky and a howling northerly wind. A couple of big names made the A grade event interesting. Steve Williams, national senior road champion and Paul Rowney, Sydney 2000 Olympian, shared much of the workload. Eastern Suburbs rider Stewart Campbell (alias `Computer') tried to psych out the opposition by starting the race with brightly dyed purple hair. The pace was on from the start. By lap 2 Steve Williams turned up the pace and attacked followed by Paul Rowney. The two riders got a gap of about 30 metres from the bunch but were quickly brought back. The fast pace took it's toll however on some of the weaker riders and by lap 3 two of the A grade riders had been dropped. The race then settled down and the peleton worked together until about 9 laps to go when `Computer' attacked again with Anthony Spurgeon on his wheel. Steve Williams and Paul Rowney then came across the gap and it looked for a while as though the group of four would work together and stay away from the bunch. This was not to be however, and the bunch once again came together. Throughout this time Randwick Botany under 19 rider, Shaun Higgerson was not only staying with the elite A grade bunch but also doing his share of the work. With 4 laps to go Shaun attacked and pulled a gap of about 40 metres on the bunch, followed by Steve Williams. These two shared turns and for a while looked as though they were going to stay away but again the peleton fought back and caught the attacking riders. Shaun looked very determined as he crossed the start/finish line and received the bell with one lap to go and led the A grade field into the final lap. Steve Williams was too strong though and led the sprint out right to the finish with Stewart Campbell on his wheel in second. Anthony Spurgeon looked all set to make that now famous final Spurgeon sprint finish but the pace must have taken its toll on him and he looked content to settle for third. The average speed of the A grade race was just under 40km/h. The B grade pace was similarly fast and the windy conditions quickly took its toll on the riders. Such was the pace that there were only 4 riders left with 10 laps to go. There were plenty of attacks in the C grade race as well with different groups trying to get away from the main bunch at different times during the first half of the race. With 7 laps to go however, the peleton came together and the commissiare judged this to be the perfect time to blow the whistle for the sprint prime. The next lap saw Tony Caruana take out the prime (pronounced preem). The sprint must have taken its toll on Tony because he had nothing to throw at them in the final sprint. Randwick Botany rider Steven Bligh took out first place from Eastern Suburbs rider, Frank Conceicao second. Steve has been spotted out training regularly lately and it is obvious that it has paid off. Randwick Botany rider Nick Contogiannis was too strong for the D grade bunch in the windy conditions. The bunch was very well behaved and stayed together for most of the race. With 4 laps to go, Nick attacked and started to test the competition. In a well-planned race Nick finished first just in front of fellow Randwick Botany riders, Ron Sproule and Paul Baker. Luke Davison was too strong for the 14km E grade race and easily finished first, followed by Mark Woodhouse, and Julia Guinan. Junior Development Officer Peter Zala stirred up the juniors this week by conducting much longer than usual individual time trials. The A grade junior men had to complete over 8 laps or 16kms. B grade did 8 kms. The A grade junior women did 6 laps or 12 kms and the C grade boys did 2 laps or 4 kms. At the completion of the individual time trials two 2 lap scratch races were also conducted for B grade and C grade juniors. Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts club racing every Saturday at Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm. It was left up to the riders to select their partners and prizes were awarded by drawing them from a hat. Except for a fluctuating wind the conditions weren't too bad for the race and some quite good times were posted. For time trials the handicapper seeds the riders in reverse order to how he thinks they will finish and he did a pretty good job. The pre race favourites of Adam Rourke and Paul Forrest didn't disappoint with a first lap split of 26.37 and second lap of 12.44 for a total time of 39.21. The next closest team was Adam Crowther and Frank Soto with a 27.53 and 13.17 for a total of 41.10. The third fastest team on the day was Austin Pitman and Frank Tortorici with a 29:20 and 13.58. The closest two teams on the day were Dylan Forbes and Adam Hotchkis who were one second quicker than Jeff Gray and Danny Hennessy on the first lap and recorded the same time for the second lap to finish with 44.10 to 44.11. Special mention should go to Eric Doughty and Garry Doughty who had an aggregate age of 125 years and recorded a reasonably good time of 49.50. Summer racing commences next weekend, which means a change to Sunday morning 8.30 starts. The first races will be criteriums at Warilla. Another feature of the summer season is the return of track racing. Club president Garry Doughty says this year the Club has been fortunate to have the Illawarra Cycling Academy coach Glenn Doney offer to assist in the running of the track nights. In addition to his experience he is bringing a few new ideas which we hope will increase attendances on track night. Racing will be held on Wednesday nights at Unanderra velodrome. A common feature of the race season will be longer races such as 100 lappers. The first race will be on Wednesday the 10 October and will be a 100 lap all-in race commencing at 7pm.
