Burleigh, Qld September 23, 2001

By Geoff Frost

There's no doubt that the Burleigh crit course is a favourite with Gold Coast riders. Numbers are always up by 30 per cent or more whenever the "Burleigh Worlds" are contested, and with summer fast approaching it won't be long before the fields are over 100 once again.

A Grade was stirred up quickly by John Kane, Jeff Harris and Stuart Monk, who soon opened a 20 second lead, which they held for 20 minutes before the bunch got themselves together and pulled them back. Soon after, Jayson Austin, Crackles Cahill and Paul Woodger had a go, but their effort lasted only five minutes before they were also back in the fold. From there it was a bunch ride to the finish. Greg Pooley tried his customary attack in the back straight which gained him a small gap, but not big enough to hold off the sprinters. At the line it was Jon Cantwell a clear winner from Riki Lanyon and Gavin Arnold. Thanks to Mikes Bikes for the A Grade vouchers and prizes.

B Grade was happy to ride en masse for almost the entire race, with Steve Whittle producing a strong sprint from the front to win from Paul Webb and Zane Thorpe.

Brendan Reddan had his first race on Sunday, and he spent most of the C Grade race off the front by himself. As a triathlete he had no problem time trialling by himself, and with father Greg being a top 10 finisher in the Hawaii Ironman in the early 80's, he also has the pedigree to be a strong cyclist.

With three laps to go his 30 second lead from mid race had dwindled to only 15 seconds, and the "experts" at the finish line had no hesitation in predicting he would be caught in the frantic last laps. But they were wrong! Reddan dug deep and was still 20 metres clear at the finish, with Peter Thomsen and John Mildenhall closing fast.

Frank Schirmer has been in great sprinting form in recent weeks, and he showed it again on Sunday. Stan James put himself in position for his normal top three placing in D Grade, but into the straight it was Rob Driver who hit the front, before Schirmer powered home over the top to win from Driver and Maurice Liussi.

Alan Hunt was too strong in E Grade, and on current form he may be looking at a ride in D Grade soon.

Congratulations to CATS riders Brad Payne and Ben Mockridge, who won the Australian Under 17 Pairs Time Trial Championship at Mooloolaba last week.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club

Maroubra, September 22, 2001

Randwick Botany Cycling Club under 15 rider Luke Cridland was the third placed NSW rider in the Time Trial competition at the Cycling Australia National Club Road Championships in Mooloolaba, Queensland on Saturday 22 September 2001. In the Road Race, Luke escaped a crash late in the race to be placed ninth out of a field of 43 of Australia’s top under 15 riders.

In club racing, Randwick Botany under 17 rider Chris Jenkins came within seconds of taking out the combined senior A and B Grade race at Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 22 September 2001. After 36 grueling kilometres, Jenkins led the bunch of 20 riders in the final sprint to the line. The sight of a 16 year old junior rider leading the premier A/B Grade event of the day over the final 200 metres caused the small crowd of spectators to erupt with applause to urge Chris home. Three riders just got past Jenkins in the final metres of the race with Team Caravello rider Anthony Spurgeon crossing the line first in a time of 60 minutes 25 seconds. Second was Nick Rule with Paul Hanley third. Jenkins finished fourth, followed by Peter Lynch.

Peter Russell established a 100m lead over the C Grade bunch early in their 30km event. After the bunch re-grouped midway through the race, Craig Dempsey made a 500m breakaway that he maintained to finish first in a time of 52 minutes 47 seconds. Under 15 rider Keegan Aitchison was well positioned leading into the last lap but Russell won the bunch sprint to claim second place just ahead of Andrew Hudson.

Robert Ingle broke away from the 16 rider D Grade bunch halfway through their 20km race. Nick Contigiou led out in the second half of the race but pulled out before the race finished. First across the line was Peter Tzikas in a time of 36 minutes 29 seconds with Brad Playford second and Frank Campbell third. The 16km E Grade placing were Luke Davison first, followed by Mark Woodhouse, Ken Woodhouse and Kevin Blanchfield.

New Junior Development Officer Peter Zala conducted eight junior events including under 17 Men 6km Time Trial, under 15 Women 6km TT, under 15 Men 6km TT, under 13 Men 4km TT, under 11 Men 4km TT, under 9 Men 2km TT, A Grade 10km Handicap and B Grade 6km Handicap.

Caesar’S Illawarra Cycle Club

September 22, 2001

With a top quality field and excellent weather for racing Saturday, September 22nd's, 41.5km A grade scratch race was shaping up to be an epic race. Just to make things a little harder, the longer of the two laps, which includes the climb up the steep side of Marshal Mount, was placed second rather than the traditional first.

There was a who’s who of the inform racers in the State which included Scott Bradburn, recently returned from overseas and his 5th place in the Grafton to Inverell, Craig Gordon, just back from the World mountain bike titles, top Central Coast rider Graham Rutter and Craig Williams also fresh from an overseas stint. Top locals, Mal Haigh, Danny Hennessy and Paul Forrest were also present.

After a few concerted surges from Bradburn, a group of five separated form the bunch. He attacked the breakaway group at Yallah TAFE on the second lap out causing a split in the bunch which saw Hennessy loose contact. Williams was the only rider able to go with Bradburn. Rutter and Forrest got back together and set off after the leaders.

Hennessy put in a big effort which enabled him to join Forrest and Rutter. Bradburn dropped Williams but he was able to stay away from the chasers.

Bradburn soloed in for the win and a course record time of 59.58.48, averaging over 40km/h on the tough course. Williams crossed the line 33 seconds later. Rutter won a very close sprint for third from Forrest and Hennessy.

The winners ride in B grade was equally impressive. On the first lap heading out under 17 rider Josh Wall attacked and after a short while was joined by Dave Russel and Grant Farr. Never too far infront of the bunch, the three worked well together clawing an extra few seconds per kilometre away from the chasers.

The chasers were not sitting back, they were swapping off turns desperately trying to bring back the leaders. The work was equally being shared by Richard Lorenc, Lionel Covington, Adam Hotchkis, Patrick Delahunty and Jason Johnson.

Near the end of the first lap Farr found the effort a bit too much and returned back to the bunch. Try as they might over the next lap the chasers were unable to decrease the gap to the two leaders, infact Wall and Rusel were able to increase their lead.

Wall was able to pip Russel on the line to record a very impressive win in a time of 66.15. The ride has almost assured the two of a start in A grade next race. In a tight sprint for third place Lorenc got the nod from Hotchkis.

In a very even race the whole of C grade, all but one of the riders were up for the sprint finish. Try as he did with many strong attacks Mal Moss had been unable to break away. The stand out riders including Moss were Dennis Fitzgerald, Peter Kelly and Jeff Gray.

Moss was just able to hold off a very fast finishing Fitzgerald with Kelly in third place. Teegan Makowski rode strongly and was able to stay with the leaders.

In an ominous warning. Fitzgerald was heard after the race saying "I’m back!"

Even though the D grade field was the smallest on the day, it was still an epic struggle between the riders. Peter Vesel was on the attack early which saw him get away with Paul Kaye and Jack Laajoki. After a second attack Laajoki lost contact but he didn’t give up and chased the leaders all the way to the finish. Vesel showed Kaye a clean pair of wheels in the sprint finish with Laajoki coming in third.

Next week’s race is a 37.5km two person time trial with group 5 providing the marshals.

Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club

September 22, 2001

The weekly road race conducted by the Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club was held on the challenging Bald Mountain course on Saturday 22 September 2001.

The 56 kilometres of this route take riders out to Bald Mountain via Chillingham and then across to Numinbah before returning to the finish at Dulguigan. This particular course features a succession of climbs as well as undulating roads which make it a real challenge for most riders. Conditions this week were also made more difficult with a strong southerly wind and occasional showers of rain.

With only three A Grade riders present, the riders joined with the seven B Grade competitors for a combined event. The race started out at a reasonable pace but this changed as soon as the bunch reached the hills and some shelter from the wind. At Chillingham, after 20 kilometres of racing, Ruben Roberts and Paul Matthews broke away and quickly established a workable gap. These two riders were still away at Numinbah but a concerted effort by Brad Conner pulled them back with about 15 kilometres left to race.

Connor had also brought a couple of other riders with him and this larger group had no trouble in remaining clear until the finish. In the ensuing sprint finish Graham Harvey was first in A Grade whilst the hard work paid off for Ruben Roberts with a first place in B Grade closely followed by Paul Matthews and Brad Connor in that order.

C Grade had a very small field of five riders. This race saw a steady pace maintained until the Couchy Creek climb where Stuart Chambers and Shaun Swain lifted the pace another notch and within the next two kilometres split this group in half. These riders were never threatened over the remaining 20 kilometres with Swain taking the win and Chambers second place. Frank Shirmer recovered well to finish in third spot a couple of minutes behind the winner.

There were only six riders in D Grade and this group worked well together to maintain a steady pace throughout their race. This group were still together at Kynnumboon with three kilometres to go when Mike McCall launched a stinging attack. Tired legs responded as quickly as they could but it took another two kilometres for McCall to be chased down. This left the finish open and a strong sprint by Stuart McPherson saw him first across the line with Jim Higgins second and Dennis Burger third.

A small group of four riders contested E Grade this week. This race was over 45 kilometres to Bald Mountain and return. These riders kept up a steady pace despite the testing conditions. At the finish Stuart Halls was first just ahead of the 'bionic man' Bill Mustard with a visiting rider and the only female competitor of the afternoon Rosalie Day taking a well deserved third place.

In other racing news a number of club members have performed well in recent open events. The Grafton to Inverell Cycling Classic was held on September 15 over a distance of 228 kilometres. Club riders did well in B Grade with Ian Walker in sixth place, Robert Lyte seventh and Nick Butcher in eleventh place. At the National Club Road Championships at Mooloolaba on Friday 21 September Ian Walker backed up well to take first place in the Mens 30 - 39 years Road Race with Jeff Collier close behind in second place. In the Mens 40 - 49 years Road Race Graham Harvey rode well against some tough competition to take sixth place. Well done to all of these riders!

Next week's race for the MACC is over the 60 kilometre flat course from Tumbulgum to Numinbah and return. Whilst this is known as the flat course there are still plenty of hills to help sort the racing out! Start time is 2.00 pm from Pat Smith Park, Dulguigan.
