Southern Highlands Interclub Road Race

Sutton Forrest, September 16, 2001

By Garry Doughty, Caesar's Illawarra CC

The overall individual and Club championship result still hinged on the final race of the Interclub Series held at Sutton Forrest on Saturday afternoon. There were at least twelve riders still in contention for the overall and the Club championship was being fought out between Goulburn and Caesar's Illawarra.

Nearly all of the top contenders were in the 10.00 and 12.00 minute bunches. Alan McClelland looked to have the overall win within his grasp on 28 points with Patrick Delahunty in equal sixth place on 17 points.

McClelland and Delahunty were in the same bunch of 12.00 minutes. At an impromptu club meeting before the race it was decided that the other Caesar's Illawarra riders would do all they could to help McClelland and Delahunty.

The riders in the 14.30 bunch would ride tempo until the 12:00 bunch came through so they could help them and the riders in the 10:00 minute bunch would not contribute to the chase.

Mal Moss started the race off at a furious pace, trying to keep the speed high at all times, and was being assisted by Garry Doughty. Not wanting to leave the work up to the others, Delahunty and McClelland were also contributing to the workload. About quarter race distance after a sharp corner, the road rose abruptly and a gap opened up in the bunch. The second highest points rider, Kelvin Lawrie from the Southern Highlands, was dropped so Doughty went to the front and drove the bunch. Unfortunately McClelland was dropped so Moss went back to help him.

They caught the 14.30 bunch and the Caesar's riders began helping. In scenes reminiscent of the Tour de France riders such as Peter Kelly gave their all and then dropped off. Phil Jones, Joe Pereira and Bethany McCarthy all rode out of their skin.

Just before the half way turn McClelland and Lawrie were able to get back onto the Delahunty group. As they turned they were 3.30 behind the leaders and still had almost a minute on the bunch that started 2 minutes behind them. The scratch riders had caught the three bunches infront of them and had more than halved the gap to the Delahunty group.

Over the final undulating section of the race the pace was mainly being set by Delahunty himself, Doughty, McCarthy, Craig Lockart from Nowra and Paul Hume from the Southern Highlands. They caught the leaders on the road within the final two kilometres. McClelland was dropped from the group within the last 5km. Lockart launched an attack with about 500m to go and then Doughty began his lead out for Delahunty. With other riders trying to stay on their wheels they caught Lockart with about 150m to the finish, Delahunty launched himself off Doughty's wheel with Lawrie close behind.

In a very close finish Michael Berriman from Nowra got the nod from Caesar's Illawarra's Joe Pereira with Delahunty third. Lawrie finished in fifth place with enough points to secure the overall win. Teegan Makowski rode extremely well for a well deserved seventh, with Lou Jonceski eleventh and McCarthy twelfth.

Delahunty had given it all and well and truly ridden the race of his life. He secured second place overall with McClelland third. Illawarra also took out the Club championship points competition. It had been a good days race and a great day for the Caesar's Club.

Canberra Off Road Cyclists 2001 Winter XC Series, Race #4

Queanbeyan, September 16, 2001

Clear blue skies and warm spring temperatures greeted the 57 riders who lined up at the start of race four of the Canberra Off Road 2001 Cyclists Cross Country Winter Series. The course, designed by CORC member Paul Cole, was a fairly short but tough lap of approximately 5km, winding through a scenic backdrop of eucalypt bushland. A number of tricky rocky descents, tight corners and energy sapping climbs challenged all riders.

The abundance of rocks meant many riders suffered punctures, and lost valuable time repairing them. This was the case for Ben Geier who had led the Senior Men's race, hotly purusued by Ian Downing, until the final few hundred metres, where he was passed by Downing and then suffered a back tyre puncture. Downing took the race. Geier ran with his bike to the finish line to take second place, with Luis Severino in third.

In the Women's race Julia Graczyk finished first ahead of Trish Garrett.

There was some exciting racing in many of the other categories. Despite a nasty crash on one of the descents, Paul Atyeo had a comfortable win in the Veteran Men's category. An ever improving James Newhouse won the race in Sport A Men.

Lenny Hammond Memorial Handicap

Modella, September 16, 2001

Blue skies for the annual running of the Lenny Hammond 100km Memorial Handicap, held in honour of a former Great Australian Road man. The race is proudly sponsored by his son, Terry, proprietor of the Terry Hammond Cycles chain.

While the skies were blue, and the temperature pushed 20 degrees, the fierce northerly wind stopped it from being "one out of the box." Slightly built Israeli visitor Danny Cohen, still in awe of the massive peleton from the previous day's "Hell Ride", was in danger of being blown over in his introduction to the Australian novelty, the road handicap.

Windy conditions usually favour the stronger, more experienced back markers, who maintain a steady tempo and ride a closer echelon, while the front markers tend to self destruct, sending riders off the back far too early to maintain a high pace. Many of the Club's stronger riders were absent on an epic bus journey to the Club Nationals in Mooloolaba (Our club is another victim of the Ansett Airlines disintegration), so today the back marks were not at full strength. An interesting challenge for long time Handicap devotee but novice handicapper Mick Hollingworth. 60 riders faced the starter, split into eight groups, with 30 minutes between Limit and the Scratchies. The chopping block was only 2 minutes ahead of Scratch, which suggested a quick capture.

It was not to be, however, as the Veteran crew off two minutes, lead by locomotives Bruce Will, Harry Hendon and Geoff Whiter, started like a train, making the job tough for the scratch bunch. Things went from bad to worse when James Giannakakis, wearing the number one saddlecloth broke his headstem and face planted at full speed. Off to hospital for James (no serious injury) but the Scratch bunch never recovered momentum and lost time on the bunch in front.

At the head of the race, the 20 minute bunch had made short work of the ten minute gap to Limit, and with a good mix of experienced old hands and strong newcomers were maintaining a good tempo in the windy conditions.

Behind, the two minute bunch were mowing down the middle markers, and at the Nar Nar Goon turn on the second lap the deficit was down to 13 minutes. Few riders were strong enough to work at the fearsome pace set, and at the Tynong turn, Bruce Will felt it was time to get rid of the passengers, and put the large bunch into the gutter for the cross wind. Only three others could go with him, Hendon, Whiter and another Vet in Geoff Thomson.

The margin continued to reduce, and the final turn at Bayles was down to two minutes. The run home was with the full benefit of the roaring tailwind, and with sails set, the three survivors of the 20 minute bunch managed to hang on by 39 seconds to take the win. Newcomer Rich Buchanan winning first up from Tony Sullivan and Milo Answerth.

Tony Sullivan's road lessons in riding a paceline to Buchanan obviously paid off. I hope the lesson continued to the other time honoured tradition - the Chop. Will held off Hendon to take fastest time, one of the few times the award hasn't gone to a Scratchman.

Finishing in the first main chase group were first woman (and new Masters World Time Trial Champ) Debbie Hobbs, and international visitors Cohen and New Zealander Andrew Ward. Danny Cohen took the format well, and on his return to Israel plans to push for the introduction of the handicap event there. Without the depth of numbers, graded events cannot be run in Israel, and he feels the handicap format would be a good way to introduce newcomers to the sport.

A working group may need to be set up for Mick Hollingworth to explain the subtle nuances to the Israel Cycling Federation.

In the Junior event, held over one lap of the circuit under 17 rider Aaron Moody was too strong for Keiran Murphy, Peter Johnston and Sean Bourke.

MACC Road Race

September 15, 2001

Racing this week was over the 56 kilometres of the tough Nobbys Creek course. This route differed from usual in that riders first went out to Bald Mountain rather than Numinbah before returning through Chillingham and into Nobbys Creek on their run back to the finish line. This route features plenty of short sharp climbs and rough narrow roads which make it one of the hardest courses on the Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club's racing calendar.

A smaller group of 28 riders lined up in three grades to contest this week's races. A and B Grades combined to give a good field of nine riders for their event. Racing was on from the start with a fast pace being maintained on the outward leg of the race. Several attacks were tried by various riders but none succeeded and the bunch were still together by the time Nobbys Creek was reached.

However the steep hills quickly took their toll with several riders dropping off the bunch and others wishing that this section of the race would soon be over! The remaining riders kept together on the run back over the flats and lined up for a sprint finish. First home after showing a good turn of speed was Scott McConnell with Graham Harvey in second place and Steve Gibbs taking out third spot.

C Grade boasted a field of eight riders who also wasted no time in getting down to business. A quick pace and frequent surging stretched the bunch out but with no riders were prepared to give in, and the race was basically intact up until Nobbys Creek was reached after 40 kilometres of racing. Once again the difficult conditions on this part of the course saw several riders drift off the bunch which was down to just four riders by the time it was over. These riders stayed together until the end where the experience and tenacity of Stuart Ellick saw him first home with Chris Hackett second and Andrew Smith in third place.

There were 11 riders in D Grade this week which included four female riders. This group shared the work on the way out to maintain a steady pace to Bald Mountain and back to Nobbys Creek. Once into Nobbys Creek though, a stinging attack by junior rider Joel Brown split the bunch completely. Joel quickly established a gap of several hundred metres with four riders in hot pursuit. Joel put his head down and rode extremely well to hold off his pursuers over the remaining 10 kilometres to the finish line. Patrick Jones was placed fourth. Jones recently returned from Chillan in southern Chile after a short time with the 'Rabie-Chillian' professional cycle racing team.
