Biggest career win for Scott Sunderland in FourmiesBy Jeff Jones Australian Scott Sunderland (Team Fakta) has continued his solid 2001 season, winning the 69th edition of the Grand Prix de Fourmies. On a wet day in northern France, Sunderland out sprinted breakaway companions Fred Rodriguez (Domo) and Jens Voigt (Credit Agricole), with Alessio's Nicklas Axelsson and Lotto's Glenn D'Hollander taking fourth and fifth respectively. The 210 kilometre race was held in wet autumn conditions, with temperatures around 15 degrees. The first part of the race was a 155 kilometre loop, followed by five laps of 11 kilometres. The first breakaway came from Bobby Julich (Crédit Agricole) and Sandy Casar (Française des Jeux), and they gained up to eight minutes before being joined by three others. However, by the time they came back into Fourmies with 55 km to go, they only had two minutes on the peloton, driven by Mapei-Quick Step. Jean Nuttli (Phonak) tried a solo move, but could only reach a 1'30 lead before he was caught by the still large peloton. With just over two laps to go, the final and decisive move came from five riders: Scott Sunderland (Team Fakta), Fred Rodriguez (Domo-Farm Frites), Jens Voigt (Credit Agricole), Nicklas Axelsson (Alessio) and Glenn D'Hollander (Lotto). They had 40 seconds with two laps (22 km) to go, and the win was by no means assured. Jaan Kirsipuu (Ag2r) and Nico Mattan (Cofidis) tried to bridge the gap on the second last lap, but they fell back to the peloton. With one lap to go, the Bonjour team was working on the front, while the break had just 30 seconds. Fred Rodriguez wasn't doing a great deal of work, as his teammate and race favourite Romans Vainsteins was back in the bunch. Rodriguez is no mean sprinter himself, and he was well placed to win. Kirsipuu tried to bridge again in the closing kilometres, but the breakaways were simply too strong, and they had enough in hand to contest the sprint amongst themselves. The sprint was strongly led out into the last corner by Jens Voigt, who wanted an advantage on the rest into the final straight. Sunderland was having none of it, and quickly moved up and passed Voigt with 200 metres to go. Rodriguez wound things up too late, and had to settle for second behind Sunderland who took a rare but very satisfying win in the rain. The bunch sprint that followed was marred by a fall which brought down Gianluca Bortolami (Tacconi) and Roger Beuchat (Phonak). Bortolami unfortunately broke his left collarbone and his season is over.
