Slovenian Olympian, Andrej Hauptman won the 68th edition of the GP Fourmies, beating Fassa Bortolo's Andrea Ferrigato and Memorycard's Bo Hamburger in a three up sprint. Although Mapei had two riders in the decisive break, they could do no better than 4th with American Champion Fred Rodriguez taking the sprint. The bunch, going for 8th, was headed by Markus Zberg (Rabobank).

After two thirds of the race twenty riders got away, among them a Michele Bartoli in great form with two team mates, personal assistant Paolo Bettini and Fred Rodriguez, an excellent sprinter. The group got a huge gap quite fast: some twenty kilometres after the attack it was almost seven minutes and kept growing.

With 20 kilometres to go seven riders got away, both Bartoli's team mates were among them. Nevertheless three of the escapers managed to trick themselves away towards the end and the 25 year old Slovenian Andrej Hauptman won ahead of Andrea Ferrigato and Bo Hamburger. The others were 14 seconds behind.
