With a few of the top Notts and Derbys cyclo-cross riders competing on the Continent over the weekend, it was left to the likes of Julian Gould and Paul Wright (Ace RT), Chris Bradley (VC Excel) and James Furniss (Matlock CC) to defend the honour of the locals in Saturday, October 27th's, sixth round fixture at Sinfin Moor, Derby. The course, noted for its muddy terrain, was cancelled last season due to flooding and with the rainfall of last week, competitors were obviously reluctant to face yet another difficult race and entries were down to 90. They need not have worried for in the end organiser John Holmes and his Derby Mercury team-mates produced a good course which was drying out all the time the race was in progress.
Winner was Dave Collins (Pedal Power) who completed six laps in 47.30 while George Richardson (MI Racing/Peugeot) was 1.17 behind. Julian Gould was third 2.42 adrift. First veteran was Bob Wood-Anderson (Matlock CC) at 5.10. Other category winners included first junior and 21st overall Philip Dougall (Ashfield RC), first grand veteran and 27th Andy Nelson (Heanor Clarion CC), first senior veteran and 45th Dave Worthy (Matlock CC), first master veteran and 54th Terry Taylor (Matlock CC), first super veteran and 57th Ron Duggins (Matlock CC), first senior woman and 61st Lorna Webb (GS Strada), first veteran woman and 82nd Sharon Chamberlain (Ashfield RC).
The Under 16 youth race was won by Matt Roach (Rugby Velo) with a time of 27.11 for the four laps with Matlock CC's Sam Thorne only two seconds behind. Third was Sam's team-mate Tom Last (at 53 seconds) who was Under 14 winner, while first Under 16 girl was Nikki Harris (Chevin Chasers) at 2.24. The Under 12 race was won by Scott Thwaites (Triangle ASICS) who covered five laps in 7.39. Second was Ben Roach (Rugby Velo) and third William Verney (Chevin Chasers). Round seven of the league takes place this Saturday in Watchwood Plantation near Calverton. Youth race at 12:30, Under 12 at 1:30 and seniors, juniors, veterans and women at 2:15.

Stuart Blunt (Team Corridori) made light work of the heavy going at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in round 6 of the Kinesis/Mosquito Bikes London Cyclo-Cross League. He cruised to an easy win ahead of team mate Brian Curtis. The course became very tough going after heavy overnight rain with only the road sections providing relief. However Blunt rode as if on tarmac all the way. Mark Russell prevented a Team Corridori one, two, three and took the junior prize. He admitted to being disappointed with his ride at the first round of the National Trophy where he faded to fifth after leading much of the race. Steve Bayliss (Addiscombe CC) and Matthew Starey (Unattached) continued their comeback trails finishing 5th and 8th respectively.
Top veteran was Mick Bell (London Fire Brigade) in 6th place, one ahead of rival Chris Remnant (VC Meudon). Stuart Fritter (Wigmore CC) the current London League leader took 13th place two places ahead of his nearest rival Alan Duncan (GS Invicta).
Stephanie Betts (London Phoenix) took her second win of the season in the women's race ahead of the best women's field of the season. Abigail Armstrong (London Phoenix) took second place ahead of Chloe Henderson in third.
The youth race saw a close battle between Ian Field (San Fairy Ann CC) and Alex Atkins (VC Meudon) who had finished 3rd and 4th at the National Trophy race. Once again Field came out on top, breaking away from Atkins on the final lap. David Wood (VC Deal) took the Under 14 prize ahead of Amy Thompson (Cycles Unlimited) who was also the first youth girl.

Ipswich based riders made the long trek down to the London Suburbs of Leytonstone on Saturday, October 27, where the Crest CC were holding round seven of the Ivan Jeckell Eastern Cross League.
The purpose made circuit is one of the fastest in the country and combined with the excellent weather the crowd was treated to some very close and exciting racing.
Top rider in the country, Stuart Blunt (Corridori/Specialized),led the field from the start, as expected, never to be troubled, but second place was always in question, with a gaggle of riders jostling for position constantly on the technical circuit.
Blunts fellow teammate Brian Curtis managed to break the thread and pull away in the closing laps to take second place from Ipswich Based Greg Simcock (Elmy RT).
Top Junior of the race was Maldon rider Mark Russell (VC Maldon) who was well clear of second place Junior Joe Di Capité (Eastern Region Velo)
The Vets event was sweet revenge for Tim Butler (Ipswich BC), after Geoff Bores (Basildon CC), had beaten him the previous week by two minutes; he returned the favour this week.

The cheer from the crowd at the finish of the main race said it all. What must have been the closest finish of the year was a sight to behold. Russell Parkins (Elmy RT), although leading for most of the race, was caught by Paul Byatt (Cyclone Cycles), with only two laps to go. Parkins, using his wealth of racing knowledge, sat on Byatt's wheel and sized up the opposition. Coming out of the woods for the final time, Byatt led through a short section of single track. With only a hundred yards of tarmac after the single track, Parkins launched himself at the line, homing in with deadly accuracy caught and past Byatt with only a half a wheel to spare.
The rest of the field having settled there disputes with eachother crossed the line well separated, giving the judges time to recover from their initial shock of trying to separate the first two.
The event attracted a few riders from further a field in the shape of Veteran National Champion Martin Eadon (Ace RT). The only Vet who was able to give him any opposition was a very inform Tim Butler (Ipswich BC), who despite having raced the previous day managed to keep with Eadon until the halfway point.
