London Cyclo-Cross League - Round 5
By Derek Dowden
Charlotteville CC promoted Round 5 of the London Cyclo-Cross League on Sunday 21 October at Riverside Park, Guildford. Rain again made this mostly parkland course heavy going.
Racing in the younger categories was, as ever, hard fought. A spirited sprint in the Under 16's decided 3rd. and 4th. places.
In the main event, Andy Taylor (Corridori) took advantage of some notable absences (who were racing today's National Trophy event) to take a well-deserved first place, despite running a 10K race earlier in the day. Taylor was chased hard by Phil Rayner (Brixton Cycles) for the first couple of laps before Rayner pulled out.
Taylor's win makes it 5 out of 5 to Corridori in the London League series. Andy Dickson (Mosquito Bikes), took first Vet and 4th. overall, whilst first Junior went to Chris Ansell (Festival R.C.), fifth overall. A close tussle further down the field for 6th. and 7th. places saw John Lewis of the promoting club pip vet Paul Warner (Team Darenth) by 1 second.
The heavy going saw four riders withdraw, and there were no women starting, again probably owing to the clash with the National event.
