Normal road racing resumed for the Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club on Saturday 20 October 2001 following the Regional Championships which had been held the previous weekend.
The course this week was over a shorter 45 kilometres which took the riders out to Bald Mountain and then back through Chillingham to Dulguigan. Although shorter in length the racing was perhaps even more intense as a number of riders pushed their limits to be first across the finish line.
A and B Grade combined for their race this week. The 8 riders started off at a moderate pace but after 10 kilometres Hamish Brown from Cairns broke free from this group and set about building up a workable lead. At the Bald Mountain turn around Brown had some 60 seconds on the chasing riders and was looking quite dangerous.
Unfortunately once back at Chillingham Brown went the wrong way and was subsequently disqualified, leaving the race open to the remaining riders! This group maintained a fast pace on the way back but stayed together until a series of attacks over the final few kilometres broke the bunch up. The few riders left fought out the finish with Rob Lyte first across the line with John Kane a close second and Paul (AIS) Matthews in third place.
The 8 riders in C Grade also set to at a brisk pace in their event which saw the group remain together on the outward leg of the race. Once past Bald Mountain though the speed lifted a few notches which saw a number of riders go out the back of this bunch. The remaining 5 riders kept up this momentum on the way home but none were prepared to give in despite repeated surges and attacks. In the final dash for the line Lindsay Smith unleashed his powerful sprint to be first home with Wilf Hubac and ‘fast’ Freddie Mason in second and third places respectively.
D Grade boasted a field of 9 riders who quickly settled into their race. The quick tempo of this event was continually being pushed by one of the younger riders M. Brown and it took all the experience and skill of the more senior riders to keep this race together. Despite Brown’s efforts the group was still intact coming back over Kaehler’s Hill with only a few kilometres left to race. Brown was beginning to look dangerous for the finish when he was unlucky to suffer a puncture which put him out of the race!
Brown’s misfortune left the way open for the other riders to fight out a sprint finish. First across the line after a fine sprint was the consistent Frank Shirmer. He was closely followed by Martin Davis and Jim Higgins in that order to round out the top three placegetters whilst Sandra Bury was fourth across the line and the first female to finish in today’s racing.
Next week will again see a shorter race of 45 kilometres over the very pretty Upper Crystal Creek course. Start time is 2.00 pm from Pat Smith Park at Dulguigan with refreshments and socialising available at the conclusion of racing. See you there!

National MTB Champion Wins At Heffron Park
The Snowy Wilson Memorial Criterium was held at Heffron Park, Maroubra, on Saturday 20 October 2001. Over 100 senior men and women riders from all over NSW registered to complete in six races around the tight 2km Heffron Park circuit.
B Grade Men/Masters and U19 Men combined to compete for 45 minutes plus 3 laps. Randwick Botany rider Shaun Higgerson broke away early in the race and was later joined by another Randwick Botany rider Patrick Jones. The two riders worked together to lap the field with Higgerson crossing the line first just ahead of Jones. Antonio Iannacito from the Harlequin club and Owen MacPhillamy from the Central Coast filled the minor placings.
Brad Hooker from Marconi Fairfield made a solo breakaway midway through the C Grade Men/Masters, 45 minute + 3lap event. Randwick Botany rider Mark Robertson bridged the gap and the bunch reformed for an exciting sprint to the line. Penrith Panther rider Arthur Driver crossed first followed by Dylan Forbes from Illawarra, Matthew Hooker from Marconi Fairfield and Paul Itanley.
In the D Grade Men/Masters event, over 30 riders raced for 30 minutes plus 3 laps. First across the line was Adam Hotchkis from Illawarra, followed by Anthony Fodera from St George, Stephen Bligh from Randwick Botany and Stephen McManus from Lidcombe Auburn.
Women/Masters/U19 combined event was contested for 30 minutes plus 3 laps. Joanne Hall from Randwick Botany finished first, Beth Bowen from the Sydney Cycle club finished second with Sarah Rockell from Randwick Botany finishing third. Fourth to finish was Julie Howard from Sydney Cycle club.

It is unusual for a lap to be taken on the hilly Nerang circuit, but on Sunday it happened twice, as both A and C Grades were won by three man breaks which lapped the field.
The main protagonist in A Grade was the usual suspect Jayson Austin, who fifteen minutes into the race was off the front alone. Five minutes later he was joined by Steve Rooney and John Kane, and that was the bike race. By forty minutes they had lapped the field and then went straight past to put a further gap in them. Steve Rooney is a former Australian Criterium champion, and at the finish he had too much speed for Austin and Kane.
B Grade was the only grade content to ride as a bunch throughout the race, and it was James Butcher who used his track speed to get across the line in front of mountain biker/road rider/track rider Les Heap and State Under 17 rep Brad Payne.
C Grade was split to pieces early on when David Sheppard, Joel Davis and Paul Cribb went off the front, and by 35 minutes they had the bunch in their sights and caught them soon after. Davis is a talented Under 15 track rider, and even with junior gears on the downhill finish he was too quick for Sheppard and Cribb.
Vlad Nielsen and Gary Parkin rode away with D Grade and couldn't be split by the judges, while Vince Nucifora surprised Alan Hunt with his finishing burst in E Grade.
Next week will see a change in format at Burleigh, with B to E Grades riding a handicap criterium at 7 am, followed by A Grade riding a pointscore criterium at 7.45 am on the short circuit.
