A gusting SW wind ensured a field of ten riders was going to find the two lap A grade scratch race, tougher than normal. Early attacks by Adam Rourke and Graham Rutter kept the pace high early in the race. All the early attacks were covered by an eager worker group. Danny Hennesey formed a gap and was joined by Brad Martin after the first turnaround. This break was dangerous for the chase group, but some hard work from the bunch, brought the break away back before the start of the second lap.

More attacks continued, but led to nothing. The bunch eased slightly and Rutter attacked 2km from the final turn around. Mark Walters took the opportunity got across to Rutter and a small gap was established. At Hooker Hill the bunch had closed on the two away just enough to allow Hennesey to get across to the break. Rutter and Hennesey drove hard into the headwind to increase the gap on the bunch, with Walters managing to hang on.

Hennesey led the sprint out, Rutter came around, but Hennesey kicked again just in time to take line honors in a close finish. Walters came in at 3rd place about 5 seconds behind.

There is nothing like a stiff SW to ensure a fast start to a race. By the time the B grade bunch reached Yallah TAFE they were averaging 46.8km/h. Not suprisingly they didn't maintain that average for the entire race distance.

Marcus Arnold led the bunch up Marshall Mount the first time with Lionel Covington hot on his wheel. The two were quickly caught on the descent and then Patrick Delahunty went to the front and maintained a pace of over 45kmph for the next few kilometers. Another small gap opened up on the climb of Hooker hill but it was also closed down quickly by the bunch.

Stuart Colquhoun slipped off the front of the bunch when they turned into the wind and pulled away with apparent ease. It took a concerted effort by the bunch to pull him back at the end of the first lap. the second lap was very similar to the first with the exception of a big effort by Adam Hotchkis which saw him off the front of the bunch for a few kilometers.

Again when the hit the wind on the run to the finish Coloquhoun rode off the front. A kilometer later Raf Moriani attacked the bunch and tried to bridge the gap. It looked like Moriani would hold onto second place but some concerted chasing by Delahunty, Covington, Jason Johnson and Grant Law saw him caught with 300m to the finish.

Hotchkis led the bunch sprint out with Law hot on his wheel, try as he may Law couldn't go over the big man and Hotchkis took a very well deserved second place with Law third.

Possibly the largest C grade field for some time started in the race. After the climb of Marshall Mount and Hooker hill a fair amount of damage had been done by Joe Pereira, Paul DuBois and Jeff Gary and the bunch had been split into two.

The overall result was going to be decided by the six riders that had scaped. Alan McClelland again provedto be a handfull for the other riders with his strong riding. The two D grade riders had started with C grade and Paul Kaye had been able to go with the quicker of the C grade bunch, a big effort from him.

Even though they tried there was no further split in the bunch and it wasn't until the last few hundred meters that Pereira and Gray ascerted their dominance by leaving the others in their wake. Pereira held off a very determinde Gray for the win with McClelland crossing the line nine seconds later for third.

Kaye took out first place in D grade with Roger Phillips second.

The Australian Master's Games, at Lake Macquarie, concluded on Sunday. Several Illawarra riders made the journey up to participate including Jack Laajoki, Lyndal and John Groom and Eric Doughty. Laajoki was in a very competitive aged group with several riders who have competed on the World stage over the years. He still rode to the best of his ability and enjoyed himself.

The competition for the Grooms was very stiff, not ony in their age divisions but also between each other. They both received a medal in every event they competed in, the overall result went to John as he had entered more events. John had to leave early so he could recouperate for the 24hr mountain bike race over the wekend in Canberra.

There was a Masters 10 division for riders over 80 years old that Doughty was entered in. There were four track events and he won all four. He rode the road time trial and won gold recording the third fastest time for riders over 70 years old. the criterium, road race and hill climb were all combined with the Masters 8 and 9 divisions. He won his divisional gold in each of the events and was placed third overall in each event behind two Masters 8 riders.
