The First Annual Crash Corrigan Cyclocross Classic was held in the old Corriganville movie ranch where such great classic shows as Gunsmoke, the Lone Ranger, African Queen and Robin Hood were filmed. The classic style cyclocross course raced through legendary Sherwood Forest, Jungle Jim Lake and Old Silvertowns Main streets.
1999 So Cal District Champion Mark Nobel (Team Rocket Parts/KHS) showed he is going to be a factor this season giving a sound thrashing to his competions. While Dorothy Wong (Team Kelly) raced with alot of heart to take the women's honors. Northern Californian James Coates (Team Stealman) came down to win the Masters A Category giving race promoter Gary Hanson (Team Mercury) a run for his money. All in all a good timr was had by all.

Finally! true cross conditions on a Belgium-esque course complete with long stretches of sand and muddy single track at South SeaTac Park Sunday, October 21.The St Jude's Children's Hospital benefit race raised over $4000 and hosted great racing as the rain came down along with the true cross aficionado's. A special thankyou to the sponsors of this race: Klein, Diamaondback, Tioga, Salsa, Parkland Bicycle, K2, Kona, REI and Chris King. Ian Tubbs won the Diamondback Podium Cyclocross bike by fundraising over $1200 for the kids. This coming weekend is a bye in the REI Metro series and a chance to race Bellycross; one of the best courses in the state.
Rain and temperatures in the 50's produced greasy mud, rain puddles the size of Volkswagen beetles and heavy, heavy sand that sapped even the fittest riders. The course was a fusion of new and old as years of hard work at this site paid off with a new spectator friendly configuration at this festival like venue.
The elite men's race was a replay of last Sunday's duel between Russell Stevenson (Redline) and Loren Hanson (AT&T) taking it down to the last lap with the experience of Loren Hanson again allowing him to reel in a ferocious Stevenson bid for solo victory. Besides the great duel of Stevenson and Hanson, another note in the Elite Men's A race was the rock-steady overall series performance of two very experienced road riders, Ronnie Schmeer and Rich McClung (Broadmark) who are battling it out for second and third overall with Ronnie staying one step ahead of Rich so far.
In the elite women's race, Ingrid Spies (K2) took her first win of the season, with Kristy Berg (JS2) staying steady for second and keeping her comfortable margin in the overall series.
The Men's Master A's was a breakthrough ride for Todd Anderson who moved into the lead after a very fast first lap by course designer Patrick Bentson. This was a tough race that also saw the rise of Dan Peterson (Aurora) riding a smart pace and moving through the field to finish second over a consistent Robert Dunn-Ballinger (Bianchi). The Masters women had Wanda Howlett (Terrafazioni) going five for five with Sharon Viner making her second appearance and toughing it out for second place.
In the Killer B category, last weeks winner Alvin Nucum (Bianchi) made a habit of it with another first place and newcomer P Power taking second place. For the women's B's Nicola Mann finally found an edge over Kathy Smith (TiCycles) after four tries with Joyce LaGow a consistent third with the same for the overall series. The Masters B's found a new leader with the smooth Dana Parnello (REI) taking the win and moving into the top ten overall by leaving Frank Manfre to fight off Phil Oppenheimer for second and while holding onto second in the series.
The ever growing ranks of people 18 years old and younger had a repeat men's winner with Collin Carbaugh going three for three since September and making it another three man TT for Rad Racing with the day's results mirroring the series overall: Tucker Thomas second, Stephen Howard third, all RAD Racing!
In the Junior B's Adam Southerland took his first victory of the year over the consistent Walker Duval (first series overall) and Josh Hansen (second series overall). The Kids had a new winner, Sam "the man" Drake who kept Samantha Fowler at bay for second.
In the hotly contested Beginner category, newcomer Mark Beattie beat out overall series leader Justin Pierce and second in the series overall August Wheeler to get the big 26 points on the board. The women's race had the biggest field of the year with the series silver medallist Jodi Hess taking her second victory in a row over fresh new face Maribeth Evezich and another newcomer taking third, Leana Gerrard.
This weekend is a bye in the REI series, with a race in Bellingham on Sunday and then we resume at the legendary North SeaTac November 4. Thankyou to everyone who donated time and money to make the St Jude Benefit race a great success.

Not leaving anything to chance, OBCR's Darin Schlake jumped early in Saturday afternoon's cat. 1/2/3 competition and never looked back. Building a commanding 50 second advantage over chasers Christian Davenport of RCRC and Kevin Wilkins of Team Kaos, Schlake pushed the pace and moved ahead in the points battle with one race to go.
"It was more technical out there today and not as wide open," explained Schlake. "I felt really good today."
The first place finish creates an interesting showdown for next week's Pioneers Park event. Based on the current points standing, Schalke is ahead by one with the lowest point total of four. Davenport of RCRC is in second with five points. However, only the three lowest point totals count in the competition. Also, in the event of a tie the results of the last event serve as the tie-breaker. Therefore, next week's Cat. 1/2 race is the deciding race.
"I feel good about my chances next week," commented Davenport. "Pioneers is a more open course and suits road riders a little better. Schalke will have better form for Pioneers this time, though. It will be interesting."
After next week's regular series finale at Pioneers, it's back to Mahoney Park for the 2001 Nebraska State Cyclo-cross Championship.

Bright foliage was the backdrop to today's second annual Gear Works Cyclocross Race. Well over 200 cyclists from all over New England converged on the cross-country trails of Fitchburg's Saima Park. Among those were ten former and current national champions. Here's how it went...
In the Elite Men's category, former National Champion Mark McCormack beat older brother Frank McCormack, both professional cyclists for Team Saturn. Michael Broderick held off Harvard-native Rob Holt for third place. Scott Plante finished fifth for local team C.S. Ardagna.
In the Elite Women's category, Mary McConneloug of California bested Masters National Champion Jodi Groesbeck of Keene, NH. Canadian National Champion Shauna Gillies-Smith finished third.
In the Masters category, Paul Curley swept past National Champion Jan Wiejak on his ride to victory. Tim Hatz crossed the finish line three seconds later to take second place. Six seconds later Millbury-native Mike Bernard finished third.
This race was made possible by the generous support of Gear Works Cyclery and Wachusett Brewery.
