by Russell Stevenson, Broadmark Capital Pro racing team
I've been getting tons of e-mail and feedback from friends and spectators telling me what a race that was to watch. I'm glad to hear it because it was equally hard to make it so exciting.
I showed up with Chris Pike about two hours before our start. I was in my kit and on the course in a matter of minutes warming up. It took me one lap and I was totally motivated.
See, I'm not what you would call a "pure cross rider". I'm a roadie. I've spent this previous season racing for the newly developed Broadmark Capitol cycling Team. We showed up at over 14 NRC road events this year and never went un-noticed. Cyclocross to me is just a way to keep in shape and keep that competitive sprit through the winter months.
You should have heard me before the race, I was riding around chanting, "Roadie, Roadie!" to all my friends. They all continue to razz me as the roadie with lesser skills on the cross bike. Even at practice, I'm constantly trying to improve my technical ability.
After I had a good look at this course, I was stoked! Tons of power and not too many technical or running sections. My game plan was simple, hit it hard from the gun and see who can hang.
The gun went off and so was I. It took me about eight turns to get to the front where I put in two 100% laps. I quickly gaped the field leaving only Loren and Mark Hanson to chase me. My gap was increasing. My coach Steve Higgins was there giving my splits as I rode through the pits. "150 meters, 200 meters Rooooosk, 250 meters, you're dropping them."
Around about lap four, I began to slow. Maybe someday I will be able to hold that 100% effort all the way to the line but I was happy to just get out in front early.
Right about here is when my inexperience began to show. As I began to slow, mistakes began. In one lap, my margin to what was now just Loren Hanson was back to about 150 meters. As I came through the final barrier to the start/finish on lap four, I figured it was to his advantage to be chasing and indeed closing down a small gap. I sat up, rested and allowed him the lead. I figured I could learn something from following Loren rather than trying to hold him off. He is a much smoother, technical rider. Leading in that situation puts pressure on me to be smoother and faster. No thanks.
From here to the line it was Loren and I. It looked about a 1:30 or 2 minute gap back to 3rd. We were clearly free of any chasers and could begin our race for the win. As we rode the last three laps virtually glued to each other, it was so obvious who was stronger at what. Loren was so much smoother through the tight turns in the backside of the course, opening up maybe a 15-20 foot gap on me every time through. Every time the course would open up, I would take over, driving a fast pace through the field and on the pavement. There was one significant spot where I was clearly faster. Just before the longest strait in the course was a single barrier. I was jumping it in practice and was getting back my time on Loren every time through. I knew this was where I could lose Loren with a last lap effort.
As the bell rang out for the last lap, Loren led us through. I figured I should follow him, use his lines and match his speed through my weakest sections and then attack him where I was stronger. Well, I did just that. The final time through the technical, I was right on him, no 20ft gap to speak of. I was totally committed to not losing any time to him there. So far my plan was working.
He led us down into the single barrier. We hit it virtually side by side. He began his dismount as I set up to his inside. I jumped the barrier and immediately surged into the long strait. I mean I put in a max effort, in the drops, full on and full tilt! I thought "This is it, I had dropped him." Through the next turn I looked over my shoulder and there he was. He had suffered hard to close down my gap and was on the rivet. I was also hurting. The speed of this lap was fierce and I was feeling it.
I sat up and let Loren take the lead. I figured I could get in a quick rest and attack him again up a short pavement climb just ahead. We both caught our breath and entered the climb. I again put in a max effort to come around Loren but he matched it. He was equally strong and I could not gap him. We crested the short climb virtually side by side just before the final single-track. He won the battle for pole position into the trees.
We came out of the single track and Loren had another 5 - 10 feet on me, again showing he is just smoother and faster in the dirt. I charged as hard as I could up the last pavement to the final turn into the double barriers. Loren had been having trouble with this greasy wet turn all day and to my advantage he went wide. I cut off the turn to the inside to pull along side him into the final run. We ran the barriers side by side, into the last turn of the race. Loren had the inside line and a slight advantage. I gave it everything I had to get through the turn with him but it was just too tight and too late. I ran out of race course and Loren won by a bike length.
We rolled down to the end of the strait and Loren nearly collapsed on the ground next to his bike, exhausted! I slowly tried to catch my breath as I rolled down the course a ways and turned around. I coasted up to Loren, literally shaking with adrenalin.
The first thing out of Loren's mouth was, "That was the best race ever, it's races like that that keep me coming back". I agreed.
Friends and other racers quickly surrounded Loren and me, giving congratulations for a well-fought race. It was then that I was happiest with my performance. I was stoked to see people so excited watching a race. That's partially why we're there. It's hard to say the strongest rider won, but I can certainly say that experience pays. In my third year racing cross, I have learned so much from guys like Loren. That cross is not always who has the strongest legs but who can put it all together for a full hour.

Wicks and Pennington Roll to Convincing Victories in the Second Round of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series
Barry Wicks (Bike Gallery) and Alice Pennington (Gentle Lovers) earned well-deserved victories in the second round of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade held October 14 in Portland's Pier Park. By winning the second round, both riders vaulted into the lead in the eight-race series with $10,000 in prize money on the line.
Sunny skies greeted the more than 300 competitors following a light, early morning shower that firmed up the ground to ensure fast conditions. Set under a scenic stand of 150-feet tall fir trees in North Portland, the three-kilometer Pier Park course offers two distinct personalities. The first half is flat and fast with only a single pair of barriers in the opening one-and-a-half kilometers. The second half criss-crosses a deep gully six times so racers alternately plummet down 30-plus mile per hour descents and are then forced to either climb out of the saddle or s houlder their bikes to make back to the top. The most dreaded section is a punishing four-story run-up.
The strong Category A Men's field sprinted away from the start line for its seven-lap race with the field stringing out in the opening minutes. By the time the lead riders encountered the first run-up, Wicks was showing he was the man to beat as he went on to win the first lap prime of a bottle of Chianti. His teammate Shannon Skerritt (Bike Gallery) was next in line leading a larger group of pursuers.
Wicks found the fast Pier Park course to his liking, consistently ticking off laps at an average speed of more than 16 miles per hour. He used his power on the flat sections and agile bike handling - including bunnyhopping some of the barriers - to continue opening up the gap over Skerritt.
The race for third stayed close throughout the event as Doug Olerenshaw (Gentle Lovers), Jamal Hahn (Northern), Travis Hunt (Mountain View Cycle) and Team S & M's Jon Myers and Derl Miller all pushed hard. This pack rode aggressively with constant attacking on the front to try and pull away.
At the finish, Wicks put an exclamation point on his race by hopping the last set of barriers just 30 meters before picking up the win. Skerritt followed one minute later after struggling with cramps over the final kilometers. On the last lap, Ollerenshaw carried his great form from the road season onto the dirt to score third, followed in by Hahn, Myers, Miller and Hunt.
The Women's race saw Pennington take the lead early and she never looked back over the next six laps. This season has marked the emergence of Pennington as a rider to watch on the national scene as she took home a silver medal from the National Under-23 Road Race and a bronze medal from the Collegiate National Road Race.
Rhonda Mazza (Team S & M) and Naomi Gollogly were in pursuit and stayed together for the opening three laps as they tried to follow Pennington. After the halfway mark, Mazza edged away as the lead women racers began lapping the Category B Men's field.
After the order of the women's race was established, the drama turned to a unique promoter's prime that illustrates why this series is popular among regional racers. Each week series co-promoter Russ Humberston, Jr. (Safeway/Saturn of Beaverton), who races in the Men's Category B field which leaves a two minutes ahead of the women, offers $20 to any woman that passes him during the race. As Pennington closed in, Humberston had a mechanical and he stopped in the pits which seemingly handed her the prize. However, the battle of the sexes was far from over as Humberston recovered to chase Pennington down and pass her to halve her prime.
Pennington was unfazed as she cruised in to the finishing chute for an impressive win. Mazza held station in second followed home by Gollogly in third. Leah Toffolon (Bike Gallery) and Emily Miazga (Hutch's) completed the top five.
Round three of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade takes cyclists to familiar surroundings October 21 as the series heads to Portland International Raceway. The cyclo-cross course at PIR is a true Belgian style course promising fast racing and is around some previously un-raced terrain.

The best rides are always the ones with the great stories - like the one where my bike flew off my roof at 80mph - or where I won a prime by sprinting up the gravel on the shoulder of the road...
We knew it was going to be a fun day when we were marking the course in the morning and were slip-sliding all over the place The rain was off and on all morning up until start time as the temperatures hovered inthe 50's with a nice overcast sky.
As we walked the two mile course, we decided to re-route the riders from the top of the levee, which was a slick and dangerous singletrack to the lower side of the levee, which was an off-camber slick and dangerous doubletrack.
Once we had considered the course finished, except for finalizing the barriers on the SW side of the course, I ran into Rob "Want to see my Oakley tattoo" Versteegh & Jim "No, you don't want to see Rob's Oakley tattoo" Elliot and the crew re-routing the course due to a little water. I protested, but once I saw the water was ankle deep, I knew they were well-advised to re-do that part I understood and accepted their judgement that ankle deep water would be dangerous.
I returned to the registration area to conduct the pre-race meeting and get ready, when Dave Hammer & Randall Boyd told me there was a little water on the course I told them they were looney and went about getting ready for the race.
We all rode a half mile over to the start-finish area in the old Brickyard, where we staged all 32 riders for their little foray, which was shortened to 40 minutes plus 1 lap due to the adverse conditions.
The race started without much trouble, until Chad "Snorkel" Vandelune had to do a Superman into the first watercrossing Lane "I put on 20 pounds after State Crit by eating Be-Bop Burgers every meal" Anderson was so mad that he rode right over Chad's saddle and squashed it.
I would have to say the course was quite impressive, but made most memorable by the water hazard before the start/finish line. Apparently, Dave and Randall were right, and I apologize as I waded through hip-deep water that I didn't think was possible.
Terry "Slider" Beenken had a little trouble keeping it on two wheels for the first part of the race, but managed to dump it a dozen times during the race. I have heard so far, only Rob Versteegh and Thaddeus "I didn't crash" Paisar didn't crash. I happened to crash on the last lap when pondering, "Gee... I haven't cra..."
And yes, there is a videotape of this race making the rounds, courtesy of Craig "Sheesh, I knew I shoulda done this race" Decker, and it is very funny! Especially Megan "I scream for watercrossings" Elliott's initial dip. Of course, there are pictures circulating too...
Overall, I want to thank everyone for joining us for this initial foray into the slime and hope to be able to bring more epics such as this later this year or early next year. I want to thank Randy, Rob, Jim, Mandy, Ross, Dave, Roger, Mikey, Phil, The Flying Siebenlists, Mama & Papa Siebenlist, Mr. Ref Woten, everyone I forgot and the many others that helped bring this race to fruition!

Race Notes by Andrew Albright
Course: hard, hilly as advertised. But a good, wide open course.
Promotion: Excellent first-year race. Actually it would have been a good established race too. Great locale on DuPont estate, replete with Water Tower; scenic vistas.
Good solid C field.
Masters 35+ race, won by Blair Saunders (Team "I won't wear them ugly jersies" Delaware).
Masters 45+ race won by Nat'l champ-hopeful Randy Root (Snow Valley), who tried to "double-down" and enter both 35+ and 45+ races. (Root would have been 2nd in the 35+ race).
"B" race, fun to watch with 1st lap excitement and big field.
Women's race won by Esp. Nat'l champ K. Compton (Wooden Wheels) going away. MAC women's jersey captured by both Josie Shew (FSVS) and Jenn Leonard (Evolution), will have to bring scissors to share jersey at Beacon 'Cross (next weekend).
Women's B - good sized field. Good to see.
Juniors: much excitement; and won by Joey Thompson (Wooden Wheels) with Adam Beattie (FSVS) providing early excitement.
Elite Men's race a tactical battle. Large group of 9 slowly whittled down to 5: Ransom "Started-on-time-this-week" Weaver (Guys), Sean "Puffy" Groom (Snow Valley), Kris "just-got-back-from-New-England-but-will-still-sit-on-front-and-hurt-people" Auer (LSV/TREK/VW), Bill Elliston (Jaeger), and the MAC Cup Men's Elite jersey wearer Ryan Dewald (Beans-Rheinhardt). Last 2 laps, Weaver was shelled, and then Auer spent. Last 400m, Bill Elliston attacks right before last set up barriers and then holds off Dewald for the win with Groom 3rd. Said Elliston of his strong competitors, "I sat at the back and waited for someone to yell at me to do some work, but no one every did". The course was difficult and hilly, but provided ample opportunities for a sly 'cross technician. Dewald still holds leader's jersey going into 3rd MAC Cup race in New Jersey next Saturday.

A combination of strong headwinds and rough terrain at Pioneer's Park sunday afternoon created the perfect backdrop for some of the best bike racing this season.
The second installment of the 2001 Nebraska Cyclo-cross series got a dose of some heated competition involving some of the state's top cyclists, including: Christian Devenport of RCRC, Darin Schalke of OBCR and Team Kaos members Kevin Wilkins and Matt Gersib. In what turned out to be a brutal physical as well as mental challenge, Davenport held on in the closing moments to snag the victory in a sprint finish. As one of the state's top road cyclists, Davenport recognized the off-road power of Schalke, Wilkins and Gersib, who are all exceptional mountain bike competitors. "The game plan was to stay with them (Schalke/Wilkins) throughout the race," explained Davenport. "I could tell on the pavement that it was going a little easier for me than the other guys. I felt if I could stick with them, I could probably take it in a sprint finish."
However, the trio of riders had another element to reconcile in Team Kaos rider Matt Gersib who joined them late in the race. "I got a little nervous when Gersib caught us," Davenport commented. "He looked like he might have had something left." In fact, Gersib did look like he had a lot left.
Systematically trimming time throughout the competition, Gersib caught Davenport and the others with a little over a lap to go. Not looking to settle in, Gersib attacked and raised the pace for the final lap.
In the closing moments, Davenport had more left than anyone else and edged out the group for his first cyclo-cross victory.
Heading into next week, the points competition gets interesting. Cat. 1/2 riders Davenport and Schlake are tied for first with 3 points. Wilkins of Team Kaos has a 2 point lead over teammate Matt Gersib in the Cat. 3 competition.
