Oregon, October 7, 2001Sundt, Grande Wins at Crusade Cyclo-Cross Series OpenerJonny Sundt (K2 Bikes) and two-time defending Super Cup champion Anne Grande (Kona/Voicestream Wireless) took decisive wins in the opening round of the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade held October 7 at the Alpenrose Dairy sports park. Sundt continued to show he is the man to beat on the U.S. cyclocross scene this year as he took his fourth consecutive win in as many weeks at a national-caliber cyclocross event. The autumn weather in Oregon finally made its debut the morning of the opening round of River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade. The technical, cloverleaf-shaped course was dampened by several early morning showers and temperatures were struggling to make it over 50 degrees. More than 380 competitors were undeterred which set an attendance record for the popular Cyclo-Cross Crusade Series that was kicking off its 10th season. With an additional $1,100 cash bonus available to the men and women for the series opener, on top of the $10,000 in cash and prizes for the eight-race series, the competition was certain to be heated. As the Category A men rolled to the starting line for the ten-lap race, the clouds opened up with a steady rain that would further soften the course. The star-studded field included many familiar faces on the Pacific Northwest cyclocross circuit, including Kona/Voicestream Wireless teammates Eric Tonkin and Dale Plant, Team S&M teammates Shannon Skerritt and Barry Wicks, World trials rider Jeremy Van Schoonhoven (Bike Gallery) and US National Junior Cyclocross Team member Aaron Bradford (Team Rad Racing). The clear star, however, was Sundt who had won the first two rounds of the Seattle-Metro Cyclocross Series where he had bested Dale Knapp and Eric Tonkin on consecutive weekends. On September 30, Sundt headed east where he outdueled national champion Tim Johnson and Mark McCormack at the UCI Cat 3 Downeast Cyclo-Cross Series in Auburn, Maine. As the race got underway, the riders did a one-kilometer asphalt loop to stretch the field out before entering the narrow, snaking course. Don Reeb (Nutra-Fig) stormed out to an early five-second lead on the field, in front of Tonkin and the barricade-hopping Sundt. Reeb lost the traditional Cyclo-Cross Crusade first-lap prime of a bottle of wine to Tonkin as he fell traversing the rain-slickened velodrome surface. Sundt and Tonkin marked each other closely as they pulled away from the field and frequently swapped the lead. Wicks was chasing in third, trailing the pair of leaders by approximately 20 seconds for most of the race. Passing through the starting area on lap six, Tonkin was working hard on the front as Sundt drafted comfortably, even having time for a smile to his friends along the course. With a lap and half to go, the Seattle-based K2-rider saw his opportunity as the leaders were encountering lapped riders. He dropped the hammer which quickly gapped the relentless Tonkin. As Sundt approached the finish line in the Alpenrose Velodrome, he had time to sit up and salute the crowd. After crossing the line, he struck a Heisman-style pose with his bicycle hoisted on his shoulder which was appreciated by the cheering spectators watching the action. However, the drama was not over. As Tonkin rolled in having fought a hard battle, Wickes had quietly closed the gap over the last two laps on the fading Tonkin. Wicks, seeing his chance, sprinted hard for the last 150 meters on the apron of the velodrome and came around Tonkin to round out the podium. Aaron Menenberg (Ti Cycles) and Russ Stevenson (Redline) filled out the top five. The women's field boasted the most successful US woman cyclocross racer in Anne Grande who has twice won the Super Cup series and placed fourth at the world championships last February. Lining up to take on Grande in the six-lap race was Jeannette Nussbaum (Bolla Bianchi), Josie Beggs (JF2 Racing), Wanda Howlett (Ti Cycles) and locals Alice Pennington (Gentle Lovers), Rhonda Mazza (Team S&M) and Naomi Gollogly (Bike Gallery). As expected, Grande jumped out to an early lead with Nussbaum staying close as the field shattered behind them. Pre-race contender Beggs suffered a mechanical in the opening lap that forced her to chase from the back of the field. As the race proceeded, Nussbaum was not able to hold Grande's blistering pace and retired, handing over second position to Pennington. The hard-charging duo of Beggs and Mazza, meanwhile, were making ground on the women ahead of them. In the final lap, Grande cruised to a comfortable win ahead of Beggs whose second-place result showed she has good form. Spectators were left wondering how the race would have evolved had Beggs been in contention throughout. Pennington scored an encouraging podium finish, followed by Mazza and Howlett. With the opening round complete, the River City Bicycles Cyclo-Cross Crusade series moves to the undulating Pier Park course in North Portland on October 14.
