This course covers 55 kilometres and takes riders out to Chillingham and then across towards Tyalgum before returning back over the same route to the finish at Dulguigan. Hills are a prominent feature on this route with 3 significant climbs occurring in quick succession on Bald Mountain and Tyalgum Hill in the middle part of the race to test riders’ legs and resolve! A total of 30 riders were divided into 5 groups for the afternoon’s race. Handicap times were go, 7 minutes and 11 minutes with chopping block at 14 minutes and the scratch riders off at 21 minutes. The 7 riders in the go group made the most of the favourable wind in the early part of the race to set a quick pace out to Bald Mountain. Once onto the climbs however this group broke up with some of the stronger riders maintaining a reasonable buffer on the rest of the field. The lead group at the half way point on top of Tyalgum Hill was Carie Smith, Todd Angelo, Jim Higgins and Dennis Burger. Their lead was to be short lived however as the chasing groups had also made the most of the more favourable winds on the way out to set a quick pace. The hills again saw these subsequent groups break up with the stronger riders going clear and gradually picking up the slower front markers. This process continued back over Bald Mountain and onto Chillingham by which time a strong group of riders had formed including Scott McConnell and Stuart Chambers. With a number of riders still in front this group picked up the pace over the last 20 kilometres. The more difficult conditions on the run back to Dulguigan, with a gusty head wind, saw several riders dropped from this group. However they eventually managed to pick up all of the front markers and with only a kilometre left to race Scott McConnell and Stuart Chambers put the hammer down and broke clear from the group. McConnell was in the best position as Chambers lead out into the finishing straight and came by to take out the sprint finish. Chambers took second place with Stuart McPherson third (7 minute group). Carie Smith from the go group came in fourth, with Rob Lyte from the scratch group in fifth place. Lyte also took out the fastest time for the race at 1 hour 30 minutes with an average speed of 36.6 km/hour. There will be no club racing next weekend as the Cycling Gold Coast Regional Championships are being held at Dulguigan on Saturday 13 October 2001 and Nerang on Sunday 14 October 2001. Club racing will resume on Saturday 20 October 2001 over a shorter distance as the season draws towards a close and the weather is becoming noticeably warmer. Start time will be 2.00 pm from Dulguigan with the race course to be advised on the day. Mt Baw Baw is the most southerly Alpine Mountain in Victoria, with an altitude of just under 1500m. Mt Baw Baw is reputed to be the steepest alpine climb in Australia, climbing 6km from the gatehouse to the top with an average of 13%. The climb itself rises 780m from top to bottom. I have to say that the last kilometre flattens out quite a bit too so the first 5km could be in the vicinity of 16-17%. Many of the leading B grade riders had to get off and walk on the climb, as the 39x23 gearing they had was too big! I've been up Buller and Hotham in a car and have to say that this climb was worse. It was at least as steep as the top 2km of Buller, which many riders in Victoria have ridden up at some stage. The last 50km was on narrow roads and did not have a straight or flat peice of road anywhere. Although the road surface was reasonably good there were stones and grit on the road which made decending difficult, with a number of riders finishing with bark off them. The weather was terrible, with B grade encountering hail and snow flurries at the finish, while the othergrades encountered thunderstorms in the last 20km. Results 110 kmsA Grade 1 David MacKenzie 2 Ashley Humbert 3 David Pell Caesar's Illawarra Cycle ClubWarilla, October 7, 2001 The summer road program kicked off last Sunday morning, October 7, with a well attended round of criterium races at Warilla. The 8:30am start and strong winds did not deter the forty-one keen riders from lining up to the starter. The morning's racing was started off by D grade. They had 15 minutes and three laps to negotiate till they saw the finish line for the last time. Almost from the first lap Peter Vesel attacked. Paul Kaye was quick to respond and was straight on his wheel. After a few laps they were brought back only to have a small rest and attack again, this time with Lou Jonceski. It looked like the race was over for the others but Roger Phillips and Ali Ross wouldn't give in. Lap after lap they chased. With four or five minutes left in the race they made contact and immediately launched their own attack. With three laps to go they were all back together again. On the final lap Vesel launched a blistering attack and rode away from the bunch to record a well-deserved win. Second place went to Kaye with Phillips in third. The C grade bunch was as active as the D grade. Their race was 20 minutes plus three laps. Joe Pereira was the first to string the bunch out with a good turn of speed. When he was brought back to the bunch it was Jaclyn Kejda's turn to turn the screws a little tighter. The two attacks had done some damage, with several riders loosing contact with the bunch. Barry Neall and Dennis "I'm back" Fitzgerald were never far from the front of the race keeping the speed up at all times. Jeff Gray showed a lot of spirit by putting in some good turns also. With so many people willing to have a go no one was able to get away. The race eventually split into two bunches of about six in each. As the riders received the last lap signal Neall put his head down and flew off the front of the bunch with Fitzgerald right on his wheel. When the riders next came into view, Fitzgerald was in the lead with Neall several lengths back. That was how they crossed the line. The sprint for third place was cut and thrust with Carlo Paiola just edging out Pereira and Gray. The B grade race was a classic criterium, it had everything, attacks, chases, counter attacks, solo efforts and the eventual lapping. From the start, Dave Russel was on the front showing he meant business, he attacked within the first three laps, and was joined by Richard Lorenc. Mick Kejda bridged the gap but couldn't maintain their pace. Jason Johnson was the next to try and bridge the ten second gap but was unable to do so. Grant Farr gave it his all and joined the two leaders. They worked well together and opened up a gap of around 15 seconds. Back in the bunch Lionel Covington, Patrick Delahunty, Mal Moss and Grant Law were also working well together and were slowly pulling the leaders back. Just when they had the leaders within their grasp the wheels fell off the chase and the gap ballooned out quickly to over 20 seconds. The three leaders seemed to get their second wind and lap by lap pulled away from the chasers. With the chasing mainly being left up to Covington and Delahunty they were unable to gain any advantage on the leaders. Just before the three laps to go signal the leaders joined onto the back of the bunch. Lorenc was too quick for Russel in the sprint and Farr came in third. Law took out forth place and Johnson just edged out Covington for fifth. The blue ribbon A grade event was 30 minutes plus three laps. The field had a lot of class in it and it showed. The attacks started on the first lap. The first dangerous attack came from Danny Hennessy, he was quickly joined by Frank Tortorici. The bunch saw the danger and mounted some serious chasing by Adam Crowther, Paul Forrest and Brad Martin. When they came back together it was Crowther's turn to attack. This scenario continued for nearly the whole race. Due to all the attacks over half the field was dropped. The most active rider was Hennessy. With only a few minutes to go, plus the three laps, Hennessy attacked again and it looked like he might get away but Forrest dug deep and bridged the gap to him. Forrest had too much speed for Hennessy in the sprint and had a comfortable win. At the start of the last lap Tortorici was off the front of the bunch, but when they came into the finishing straight it was Martin on the front with Peter Jones several lengths back. Jones put in a big sprint but couldn't overtake Martin for third place. Next weekend's races are scratch races over 37.5km, two laps to Marshall Mount hall. Group 6 is to provide the marshals. Riders and the public are reminded that track racing commences this Wednesday (October 10th) evening 7:00pm at Unanderra velodrome. The first race of the season will be a 100 lap heart starter just for the riders to get their track legs back again. A good turnout of riders is anticipated.
