Jean Nuttli had created a big surprise last year by winning the Chrono des Herbiers, as he was only a stagiaire with Phonak. He was the second man, after three times winner Serguei Gontchar, to go under the hour in the 48 km time trial, which is nicknamed by his organiser Christian Tessier as "the hour record on the road".

Nuttli didn't have a very successful first pro season. "I had a virus early in the year and started going well only in August," he said. Indeed, he won the Swiss title for time trial and the time trial in Tour of Poitou-Charente. He later came 3rd in the GP Eddy-Merckx and in the GP des Nations and was disappointed by finishing only 13th in the World's.

"So I wanted to beat my record in Les Herbiers", he said. And he did: 5 seconds better than last year.

This win was also important for his manager Jean-Jacques Loup who's a part of the plans for Phonak next year but he's in the process of building a team new that would be registered in France. The final news is expected within a week.

Nuttli is the small Swiss guy who lost 56 kilos after his military service and became a bike rider again because he felt too fat. "This man is still a mystery for me", runner-up Laszlo Bodrogi declared after the race.

The Hungarian champion was disappointed by losing the race. Serguei Gontchar wasn't, even if he came back after a big accident six days before the World's. But French hero Richard Virenque didn't exactly repeat his ride from the day before in Tour Lombardy: he finished eight and half minutes behind the unknown Swiss man!
