Bart Wellens (Spaar Select) has captured the opening round of the SuperPrestige series, held in Ruddervoorde, West Flanders. Wellens was nearly one minute better than compatriot Sven Nijs (Rabobank), with World Champion Erwin Vervecken (Spaar Select) finishing in third spot.
After a fast start on the relatively dry parcours, Wellens launched his race winning attack on lap 4, quickly distancing Nijs who struggled to hold off the rest of the 'bunch' for second. It was Wellens' second victory in three 'cross races this season, and he looks set to be one of the challengers for the SuperPrestige and the World Cup.
