Sunday morning's club races were called Feature races. The race consists of several races within the main race and were held over three grades.
Firstly the races were a 37.5km scratch race, two laps from Huntley to Marshal Mount hall. Included in that there were four king of the mountain sprints on Hooker hill and also four intermediate sprints at Yallah TAFE. Also in preparation for the final sprint at the end of the race at Huntley there was a sprint at the end of the first lap.
Each sprint during the race was worth a deduction of 5, 3, 2 and 1 seconds, the final sprint at Huntley was worth double. The overall winner in each grade was the rider who had the lowest elapsed time minus deductions for the race distance.
The stand out rider in A grade was Danny Hennessy. Hennessy, well known for his aggressive racing style, attacked at the first KOM sprint and time trialed for the entire race distance therefore enabling him to collect maximum time deductions along the way.
Tim Morris was the next placed rider with the most time deductions accumulated during the race but he missed the decisive break by Adam Rourke and Mark Walters therefore relegating him to fourth place.
Even though Walters pipped Rourke in the final sprint, he had less time deductions and finished third overall to Rourke.
The B grade race was a much closer affair. Raf Moriana displayed his climbing and time trialing abilities by sharing the KOM sprints two a piece with Jason Johnson, and by breaking away before the Huntley sprint, wining both of them as well. He won by 9 seconds from the second place getter.
Johnson and Marcus Arnold fought out the Yallah TAFE sprints scoring equal deductions between them with Joe Periera only 1 second behind. Nearly all the other riders gained deductions at either the KOM or TAFE sprint just showing how equal the riders in B grade are.
Johnson scored 2 more seconds deduction than Arnold on the KOM and won the bunch sprint at Huntley therefore securing second place with Arnold third.
The C grade bunch had their numbers boosted by one as they rolled down the road from the start as Jeff Gray left it to the last minute to join his co-riders. Peter Evans stamped his authority on the KOM with two firsts and two seconds.
Ben Hallowell dominated the TAFE sprints with three firsts and a second to go with the second highest deductions at the KOM, but lost contact with the bunch after the last KOM and lost too much time between there and the finish to be able to finish in the top placings.
Meanwhile Gray and Mark Owen had been collecting the minor placings to keep them in contention. Gray won the final sprint at Huntley from Owen and Evans but the final overall result was Evans, Gray and Owen after a very close battle.
Next week is the Club Criterium Championship at Warilla.
