Carnegie Caulfield Criterium

AFL Park, Mulgrave, November 20, 2001

By Mal Sawford

Another clear day in Melbourne after the second wash out in a row last Sunday, brought another healthy field out to the AFL Park circuit. Quite windy this evening, and the A and B grade races were made tougher by the inclusion of "the hill" each lap. The Club has decided to vary the course occasionally to keep things interesting.

Also back at the Park were World Cup Champion Anna Milward (Saturn) and Liz Tadich. Not racing yet after a few well earned weeks rest, but looking to unload surplus team issue clothing at bargain prices. A little friendly competition in the clothing stakes from ex Mercury pro Jamie Drew - at least full size riders were catered for!

The A Grade field didn't stay together long, as the attacks from early season standout Thaddeus Roos (Bicycle Superstore)and the twin pronged SBR attacks from Kristjan Snorrason and Nick Kiraly softened up the bunch. Eventually a 5 man break would go clear - Roos, Snorrason, Tom Leaper, James Taylor (ACR) and the multi sponsored Ray Turner (Diamond Back/Park Tools/Repco).

Roos was not able to maintain the hard pace and slipped back to join the diminishing peleton. The remaining quartet continued to build an unassailable advantage and would go on to fight out the finish. Turner launched off the front down the Safeway straight with around 600m to the line, and opened a 50m advantage.

Into the headwind up the home straight he switched from one side of the road to the other in a vain attempt to hold off the chasing Taylor, who overhauled him 50m from the line for a comfortable win. Snozza rolled in ahead of Leaper for 3rd place.

All other Grades finished with bunch sprints, and tested the eyesight and memories of the judges with close finishes. The large B Grade field countered many small breakaway attempts before their eventual bunch finish. 400m into a headwind is too far to lead out for most of us mortals, as the over anxious discovered - and it would be the very experienced Guy Green who had the patience to sit in and power over the top as the front runners died. Green claimed the win (and promotion back to A Grade!) ahead of mountain biker Michael Bailey, Paul Kennedy and Ian Smith.

C Grade was a family affair, with Mark Gallagher winning the sprint comfortably enough to look over his shoulder for the whereabouts of his father, Ron. Second went to Brendan Leihy ahead of Gary Trowell and Gallagher Senior, with only inches between the trio.

Stuart McNeill burst clear of the D Grade pack in the last 100m to take a good win, ahead of junior Sean Bourke, Veteran Ray Smith and another Junior in Kieran Murphy (CBD Cycles).

Gold Coast CATS CC Criterium

Nerang Qld, November 18, 2001

Numbers were down on Sunday at Nerang, due to the Darren Smith Ride also taking place on that day. This is a ride which commemorates the anniversary of Darren's tragic death in 1992, and involved members of the Brisbane Ffast Club riding down to the Coast where they were met by riders from the CATS Club, with the group then heading to the Runaway Bay Super Centre for breakfast. The Ffast Club then continued on their 170k round trip back to Brisbane. All money raised by the ride is donated to next year's Darren Smith Cycle Classic.

Racing next Sunday November 25 at Burleigh Worlds.

Exciting Racing at Heffron Park

By Tony Horneman

Seventy-four senior and junior riders registers for the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club Graded Criterium at Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 17 November 2001.

A gusty north-easterly wind slowed the sixteen rider B Grade bunch around the back of the circuit during the 32km race. Randwick Botany rider Aaron Castles and John Kenny made a break midway through the event. But recently married Matthew Lucas and U17 rider Chris Jenkins worked together to bridged the gap. Chris White made a valiant solo effort to catch the breakaways but found it tough going into the wind. White was in sight of the lead group by the last lap. John McKenzie worked hard to finish second behind Castles, who won in a time of 52min 28sec. Third place went to Michael Prince. Average speed for the B Grade race was 37kph.

The start line was crowded with thirty C Grade riders for the 28km race. Newcomers Victor Paciocco and Fab Tettoni stayed with the bunch to the end in their first race at Heffron Park. Veteran rider Shaun Ballesty showed remarkable riding skill when he was stung on the head by a honey-bee. Ballesty, who was leading the race at the time, momentarily removed his helmet to release the bee. After re-securing his helmet, he rejoined the race to finish with the C Grade group. In a wind assisted and hectic bunch sprint to the line, Brad Lane thought he had it won 50 metres out, but Stephen Bligh stormed past Lane to win in a time of 49min 20sec. Third place when to Ross Mackay.

New riders also featured in the placings of the 20km D Grade event. Robert de Beus, won in a time of 36min 49sec. Second was Greg Smith, followed by Peter Nieass in his first race with the club.

Peter Zala, the club Junior Development Officer, conducted six events for the 18 junior riders. First up was the A Grade 18km Team Time Trial. Robert Cater, Luke Cridland and Chris Jenkins teamed up to record a time of 31min 40min. Times for the B Grade 2km Time Trial were Thomas Murdoch 3.31, Chris Young 3.35, Keegan Aitchison 3.46. The C Grade 4km Time Trial times were Adriano Maradini 9.20, Tyrone Davies 9.43, Taylor Aitchison 9.49. The A Grade 10km Scratch Race was won by David Jenkins-Flint followed by Michael Murdoch and Chris Young. B Grade Scratch Race placings were Pat Boland from the Lidcombe club, followed by Mark Woodhouse and Thomas Murdoch. The C Grade 6km Scratch Race placings were Tyrone Davies, Adriano Maradini and Taylor Aitchison.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts club racing every Saturday at Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm. For more information please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307.
