Fresh from a bold showing in the Herald Sun Tour, Tasmania's Sean Sullivan turned his cycling talents for his home crowd in the annual Launceston Criterium on Sunday.
Sullivan won the Criterium Crown in the recent Victorian based Herald Sun Tour and to prove it was no fluke, destroyed a talented field in the second round of the Tasmanian State Criterium Championship in Launceston.
The format of the race was 35 minutes (plus 3 laps) of a short flat 600 m circuit.
Such was Sullivan's dominance he had lapped Nathan Hingston just six laps into the race.
The next 10 laps, Sullivan sprinted on his own, recording successive sub-40 second laps before lapping all but three other riders.
Such was Sullivan's whirlwind start to the race, world junior track star Mark Jamieson didn't see him from to start to finish. Jamieson in fact sprinted to the finish line thinking he was actually leading the race.
But Sullivan put a huge gap in the field, one by one, lapping riders and destroying their confidence on the eve of the track carnivals for the summer.
If there is some good news for others, Sullivan won't be riding at the Basslink Tasmanian Carnival Series.
"I have just had a month off since the Herald Sun Tour and for the next few weeks will be mainly training only," Sullivan said.
"After Christmas I will then concentrate on the Tour of Tasmania."
Sullivan completed a healthy 46 laps in just over 37 minutes - others simply sat back and watched in amazement in this Evandale cyclist's speed, stamina and will-to-win.
Jamieson had to be content, albeit three quarters of a lap behind Sullivan, while Ryan Sullivan (Sean's younger brother) was third and another Herald Sun Tour rider, Karl Menzies was fourth.
Other category winners include Abram Manion (Cat. 2), Simon Vanderra (Cat. 3) and Belinda Goss (Cat. 4), while junior stars were Matthew Goss (Under 17), Will Robinson (Under 15) and Alex Holden (Under 13)
