Notts And Derby Round 8

Sansom Wood, November 10, 2001

by Ron Duggins
An amazing total of 158 riders took part in the senior race of the eighth round of the Notts and Derbys cyclo-cross league at Sansom Wood on Saturday, November 10. It was certainly a league record and quite probably a national one. Organiser Matt Hallam of Beauvale CC and the judges and officials had their work cut out as riders took advantage of the fast course designed by Dave Smith.

Many of the country's top riders took part, but it was left to local rider Phil Dixon from Sutton-in-Ashfield and a member of the national Y2K squad to take the top spot and complete six laps in 50.52.

Early in the race he was trailed by reigning N & D champion Dan Alexander (Matlock CC/Wards Shoe Shops/Clarks), but even he found the pace too hot and had to be content with seventh place. That was no disgrace with the likes of sponsored riders Matt Kipling, Steve Knight and Adrian Timmis ahead of him. Vin Cox (cyclo-cross.com) also put in a powerful ride to finish ninth.

The youth race was won by Sam Thorne (Matlock CC) in 30.28, 20 seconds clear of Jon Mozley (Cratoni Helmets) and a further six seconds ahead of Kyle Graham (ASICS/TFN). Fourth and first girl was Nikki Harris followed by Tom Last (Matlock CC) who was fifth and first u-14. William Verney (Chevin Chasers) won the under 12 race with Lawrence Frost 16 seconds adrift.

LCCA London Handicap Points #2

November 10, 2001

On a dry and bright sunny day, Catford Cycling Club promoted Round Two of the London Cyclo-Cross Association Handicap Series at Eastway.

Stuart Rider (Cyclone Cycles) was the clear winner of the second round of the London Handicap Series held at Eastway. Rider started with the third group of unranked seniors, 6 minutes ahead of the scratch mark. He took the lead on the third lap, taking over from long marker Abigail Armstrong (London Phoenix). Stuart Blunt (Team Corridori) charged through to take his second third place of the series, the only rider to start from scratch. Chris Neale (Unattached) took second from the third group. Susan Carter (Team Alsager) took fifth place and first woman, riding her first 'cross for some time.

In the U10s, Samantha Bryant (Team Darenth) led the first lap but was soon overtaken by Mark Baxter (Palmer Park) who then led for the rest of the race. In the U12s Joe Perrett (Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club) won in convincing style leading from the gun closely pursued by team mate Joe Enash (Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club).

In the Youth category Steven Griffiths led from the start pursued all the way by unattached rider Adam Norris, Nicholas Jones (Team Keyne-Trek) and Andrew Griffiths (Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club). The positions remained unchanged throughout the three laps of the race. Andrew Griffiths in fourth was also first U14 finisher.

LCCA League # 8

Addington, November 11, 2001

Redhill CC promoted Round 8 of the Mosquito Bikes/Kinesis London League at Frylands Wood in Addington on a dry November day.

From the first lap Stuart Blunt (Team Corridori) looked very comfortable and steadily increased his lead over team-mate Brian Curtis (Team Corridori), Mark Russell (VC Meudon) and Mike Bell (London Fire Brigade). By the half-way stage, Curtis had overhauled Russell who worked hard until the end of the race but was unable to get back on even terms. By the finish, Blunt had opened a gap of 30 seconds.

In the women's event Chloe Henderson (Team Corridori) took her third win in the London League beating Emma Wood (London Phoenix). Series leader Stephanie Betts (London Phoenix) was sidelined with a heavy cold.

In the U10s, Samantha Bryant (Team Darenth) led from the gun to take a well-deserved win. James Wade (VC Deal) in second place was closely followed by team-mate Sam Johnson (VC Deal).

A similarly exciting race unfolded in the U12s category with Oliver Fritter (Victory CC) leading from the start. Again VC Deal filled second and third spots with Alex Paton and Michael Butler respectively.

In the Youth race, Ian Field (San Fairy Ann CC) romped away from the rest of the field looking very comfortable on the hilly circuit to finish the race in 32m39sec, 50 seconds in front of Alex Atkins (VC Meudon). Amy Thompson (Cycles Unlimited) was first girl finishing in fourth overall.
