Mosquito Bikes/Kinesis London Cyclo-Cross League
By Mark Wyer
Steve Bayliss (Addiscombe CC) took an easy victory at the Mosquito Bikes/Kinesis London Cyclo-Cross League Round 7 promoted by Wigmore CC at The Howard School in Rainham.
Bayliss had decided to give the National Trophy second round a miss and found the very fast Howard School course to his liking. He led from the exit of the starting circuit and soon built up a comfortable lead that he held until the end.
Eastern area visitor Daryl Gooch (Team Clean) also had a clear ride to second place. Jon Lyons (GS Invicta) had more of a battle for third holding off Marc Burden (London Phoenix) at the end.
The course will be used for the South of England Championships and was extremely fast on a cold but dry day. Many riders complimented the course builder Rob Kennison on his efforts. ,p> With the absence of Mick Bell and Chris Remnant on National Trophy duty, Andy Dickson was the top Veteran, beating Carl McDonagh (Brixton Cycles) by one place.
There was a very tight battle for the junior prize with Alan Duncan (GS Invicta) setting the pace for much of the race. However Chris Ansell (Festival RC) prevailed in the end and Duncan was relegated to third on the last lap by Craig Martin (Team Darenth).
Chloe Henderson (Corridori) took the women's race with a comfortable win. Last weeks winner, Stephanie Betts (London Phoenix) was holding second until the last steep bank of the course where Abigail Armstrong's (London Phoenix) strength enabled her to grab the position from her team mate.
In the youth race the first two finishers were both riding 'cross bikes for the first time. Robert Whenman (Team Darenth) was the early leader, but slipped back to second as the effects of a cold took their toll. Steven Griffiths (Lee Valley YCC) then took over for his first win in a London League event. His brother Andrew took the prize for first Under 14.
