The first round of the World Cup 2001-2002 in Monopoli (Bari) was won by 25 year old Belgian Sven Nijs. Nijs convincingly beat his compatriot Bart Wellens, while Italian veteran Daniele Pontoni took third place.

The start of the race was dominated by Italian cyclist Enrico Franzoi, who led for most of the first lap. Then Dutch rider Richard Groenendaal took over, but his luck changed when he punctured both tyres. World champion Erwin Vervecken suffered the same fate when his front wheel was damaged. The circuit was too fast to chase back on.

After twenty-five minutes (lap 3) Nijs broke through and took the lead followed by Bart Wellens, Pontoni and Greonendaal. He maintained a solid advantage for the last half of the race, eventually finishing 20 seconds clear of Wellens, who had overtaken Pontoni in the closing stages.

The next round of the World Cup, the Grand Prix d'Espagne in Igorre is scheduled for December 2.
