Florent Brard wins in Cholet

Festina's Florent Brard has taken the third round of the Coupe de France, the 24th GP Cholet-Pays de Loire. Brard beat Jean Delatour's Laurent Brochard and Cofidis' Nico Eeckhout, the three riders crossing the line separately.

The race's main escape was made by Belgian Marc Chanoine and two French riders Stéphane Bergès and Guillaume Auger. However, they were caught before one of the last hills, the bosse du Moulin-Guérin, and all the favourites were in the leading group.

Five riders (Franck Renier, Arnaud Prétot, Christophe Agnolutto, Christophe Mengin and Nico Eeckhout) attacked, gaining 50 seconds in the closing stages. But David Millar (Cofidis), Patrice Halgand (Delatour) and Serge Baguet (Lotto) then managed to bridge up to the leaders on the final hill.

However on the finishing circuit in Cholet, the eight riders couldn't quite escape the peloton, which was now down to 25 riders. Jurgen Guns, Arnaud Prétot and Franck Bouyer (Bonjour) all tried separate attacks, but it was Florent Brard who succeeded in getting away under the 1 km to go banner, taking one of his biggest professional wins.
