The stage beganat 10:00 am in the city of Popayán, and the attacks started in the first kilometres. The first intermediate sprint was won by Geovany Torres. After the sprint, the Venezuelan rider of Loteria del Táchira, José Chacón and Colombian Gustavo Guzmán (called "the Sargent" because he is a member of the Army) jumped away. Chacón won the third category climb at Alto de Mondomo and will wear the mountain jersey tomorrow, while Guzmán won the second intermediate sprint and leads this clasification. They gained 2:28 but the Venezuelan didn't work and the escapees were caught. The end was a close sprint between Victor Herrera and Marlon Pérez, who won the stage at Cali and took another ten bonus seconds for the general clasification. Tomorrow the Vuelta will continue with a team time trial. Stage description The first stage of the Vuelta a Colombia is from Popayán to Cali and is 143 kilometres long. It has a third category climb and two intermediate sprints. There are time bonifications at the finish (10,6 and 4 seconds) and at the second intermediate sprint (3,2,1 seconds). Today is the first chance for the sprinters to win a stage.
