Stage 3 - June 20: Lac-Etchemin - Lac-Etchemin, 189.7 km

Vogels rides into the lead

Mercury's Henk Vogels has ridden into the overall lead in the GP Cycliste de Beauce with a strong ride in the third stage that started and finished in Lac-Etchemin. Vogels won the longest stage from breakaway companion Svein Tuft (Canada), with the bunch finishing over 4 minutes behind the duo.

The one lap, 190 km circuit started and finished in the town of Lac Etchemin and featured 2 hard KOM sprints, in addition to the never ending "rollers". With the weather cooperating today, the major challenges would be the distance and the strong winds that greeted the riders as they headed out of town.

Within minutes, the peloton was broken into several parts as a stiff crosswind battered the bunch. The splits didn't last long as the roads zig-zagged through the farm fields, allowing the peloton to regroup with the changing wind direction. However, it was a taste of things to come. With the powerful Mroz team still wearing the yellow jersey of the race leader, the onus was on them to defend it.

Before the race had reached the 20 km mark, a group of three had separated themselves from the rest. Off the front were Henk Vogels (Mercury), Svein Tuft (Canada National) and Florencino Ramos (Tecos). With the strong winds and Mroz on the front of the peloton, it didn't appear that the trio would last. After about 15 km of chasing into the wind, the Mroz squad decided that without any help from other teams, they would no longer work. A 190 km day of working in such windy conditions would surely cause damage to even the strongest of teams. As the now cautious peloton rode into the wind at 35 km/hour, the gap to the 3 leaders grew until it reached 23 minutes at the 100 km mark, just over half-way through the race.

As the field reached St. Raphael and turned right, giving the riders a strong tailwind for the next 60 km, the game of 'chicken' became serious. With no single team interested in doing Mroz' job for them, it was a game for the gamblers: could the trio make it to the end without an organized chase to close the large time gap?

As the peloton continued their ride, the tailwind aided their efforts and the gap started to come down, albeit slowly. Although several attempts were made to escape the peloton, the speed of the field kept these efforts in check. Once the gap reached 13 minutes and it appeared that the leaders would make it to the finish, the Mroz squad again began to chase in earnest. With a little help from several other teams, notably the Saturn team trying to retain their 2nd position in the team standings, the gap came down rapidly in the final kilometers.

At the 10 km mark the report came in: Florencino Ramos had been dropped from the break, reducing their horsepower by 33%. With 5 km remaining, the main field scooped up Ramos after his 170 km foray and charged toward the finish. The 2 remaining leaders held on to their lead and finished 4-minutes in front of the field. Vogels (Mercury) took the sprint in front of Tuft (Canada National) while Gord Fraser (Mercury) nipped Navigators' Vassili Davidenko at the line for the group sprint.

Vogels' win puts him in the leader's jersey heading into tomorrow's 178 km stage around St. Georges.
