Southborough 25 mile Time Trial
Sussex, July 31, 2001
Alan Curtis of In Gear Racing Team scored an emphatic victory on Sunday, 31st July, beating
ex-Tour de France veteran Sean Yates (Team Clean) at the Southborough 25 mile time trial in
Sussex.
Curtis, 23, powered his way to a blistering 52.07, and was just 16 seconds off his personal
best. Yates was 1 minute and 11 seconds behind Curtis, recording 53.18. This was the first time the
former maillot jaune and stage winner of the Tour de France, had been beaten by a Sussex rider in
23 years, an amazing record on the part of Yates.
In 1980, Yates won the National 25 mile Time Trial Championship, and then went on to become one
of the most successful UK riders ever, winning stages of the Tour de France, and wearing the fabled
yellow jersey.
Curtis, trained by Richard Stern Training, was surprised to win over Yates, as the event was
being used in preparation for a late season onslaught on the National Circuit Time Trial
Championship, and National 10 mile Championship. "It was one of those days", said Curtis, "I felt
good on the day, even though I've been doing some tough training recently".
Third in the event was the current Sussex 25 mile Time Trial Champion, Steve Elms (In Gear
Racing Team), recording a time of 54.21. With sixth place going to masters rider Dave Pollard,
also trained by Richard Stern Training, the In Gear Racing Team took the team prize in emphatic
style. Pollard said "I used to beat Alan, he did a superb ride, I'm glad to be on the same team".
Richard Stern commented, "Alan, has great form at the moment, it was a fantastic ride. During
his hills intervals this week, Alan was riding at over 6.5 W/kg, and hardly looked like he was
trying."
Next weekend, August 4th - 5th, Curtis hopes to repeat his victory at the Brighton Excelsior 25
mile Time Trial, against former 25 mile champion Richard Prebble (Team Clean).
