Cardiff Ajax CC 2 day Stage Race July 21-22 2001

Stage 1: July 21 - Penarth Kermesse, 48 km
Stage 2: July 22 - Road Race, 74 km

Stage 1: July 21 - Penarth Kermesse, 48 km

A fast start on the Penarth ‘hilly’ Kermesse (30 laps of a one mile circuit including the Penarth seafront) split the bunch quickly. George Rose (Newport Phoenix) broke away for a few laps but the bunch did not let him go. Craig Cooke (Cardiff Ajax) was very active going uphill as he scored points for the KOM competition at 20 out of the 28 climbs. Chris Bates (Bynea CC), dropped out in the 1st lap due to a mechanical problem, rejoined the leading bunch a few laps before the finish. Around 10 riders were still together to contest the sprint on the promenade. James Frith (Hull Thursday) overtook Chris Bates in the last 100 meters to win the stage. Stage 2: July 22, 2001 - Road Race, 74km

With a 10 second margin to defend, James Frith (Hull Thursday) and his teammates did a lot of work to keep the bunch together. George Rose (Newport Phoenix) tried to break away several times in the first part of the race but the gap never reached more than 15s. Gareth Pugh (Cwmcarn Paragon) attacked and managed to stay away for a lap but he was caught at the beginning of the last lap. George Rose then attacked. He was followed by Pete Scott and they managed to stay away. George Rose won the uphill sprint finish. The bunch finished 9 seconds behind.
