GunnedahJuly 7, 2001With temperatures struggling to make double digits and light rain persisting, the 2001 Sundowner was always going to be tough. A determined ride by the scratch riders saw them pick up all bunches with about 10km to go and from there it was a matter of who could hang on for the ride to the finish. The final sprint ended up a drag race between Peter Milostic and Brian Appleyard with Appleyard having enough to get the win. Parramatta's Kevin Berkley finished 3rd whilst Jen Manefield took the
prize for the first woman home. The smaller than usual number of riders was due to the Queensland Team Time Trial Championships which were being held the following day. The full Tyalgum course covers a distance of 60 kilometres and takes riders to Chillingham and then across to Tyalgum before returning via Bray Park and Boat Harbour to the start/finish at Dulguigan. Hills are again a feature of this course with 2 long climbs before the halfway mark and then several short but steep climbs within the last 10 kilometres of the race. Riders were divided into 7 groups with the Go bunch having a start of 27 minutes on the Scratch riders with the 5 other groups in between. As often happens the groups began to break up after Chillingham as the road rose upwards towards Bald Mountain and then Tyalgum Hill. In the Go group Lee Butcher and Dennis Burger got away on this section of the course. They worked well together on the road in from Tyalgum to maintain a sizable gap on the following group by Bray Park. Further back on the course the Scratch bunch were quickly rounding up the front groups from Tyalgum Hill onwards and had brought the race back together with the exception of the 2 escapees by Boat Harbour. Despite a desperate chase by the other riders Lee Butcher and Dennis Burger had done enough to maintain their lead all the way to the finish line with Burger getting the better of Butcher to win the race. However it was only a matter of seconds later that Troy Stacey out sprinted Ian Walker to take third and fourth places respectively from the Scratch bunch with Stuart Ellick in fifth spot after a great ride from the 17 minute group. Fastest time went to Troy Stacey with the distance covered in just on 1 hour 30 minutes to give an average speed of 40 km/hour. The Monthly Point Score was also completed for the fourth month of the season with the top five riders being Tom Allen, Graham Harvey, Dennis Burger, Dave Toyer and Sandra Bury in that order. Racing next week is over the Crystal Creek course with a prompt start
at 2.00 pm from Pat Smith Park, Dulguigan. Mackey used the Heffron Park race as a buildup race to the Tour de China starting on 26 July and finishing in Beijing on 29 July 2001 and covering over 600km. Mackey will be apart of the 6-rider City of Perth team. Steve Hogg and Paul Kelly led out early in the B Grade 32km event but were chased down by the other sixteen B Graders after 6km. Kirk Purchase made a strong breakaway late in the race, however the bunch reformed for an exciting sprint to the line. First was Ken Johnston in a time of 50 minutes 38 seconds followed by Warrick Goldsmith and Dean Preddy. Herve Boutin was promoted from D Grade to C Grade and rode strongly over the 28km. First place went to Jeremy O'Brien in a time of 48 minutes 15 seconds. Second was Brad Lane and Stephen Bligh third. Frank Conceicao finished just out of the placings, having stepped off a flight from Europe earlier in the day. Bankstown Sports Club rider Paul Dimitriou again set the pace in the D Grade 20km event. Randwick Botany Junior Keegan Aitchinson, made some strong breakaways during the race and finished third, behind Paul Baker and Kane Baker. The winning time was 36 minutes. Peter Davison won the E Grade, 14km race in a time of 31 minutes 16 seconds followed by Norman Jew and Gai Cridland. Chris Jenkins Caesar's Illawarra Cycle ClubIllawarra, July 7, 2001 Another very close finish in last weekend's 44.5km handicap race should have put a smile on the handicapper's face for a job well done. Thirty six riders, spread over eight handicap bunches, faced the starter with the prospect of twice up Marshall Mount hill a little daunting, at least the race conditions were favourable. Les Hewitt was the lone rider off limit and he gave it his all, in fact he wasn't caught until the last quarter of the race. The 15 minute bunch caught the 18 minute bunch by the end of the first lap, largely due to the strong turns being done by Teegan Makowski, Lou Jonceski, Jack Laajoki, Peter Vessel and Jaclyn Kejda. The four surviving riders in the 12 minute bunch made contact with the 15 and 18 minute group just after the turn at the end of lap one. Patrick Delahunty and Terry Wall were riding very strongly with Peter Kelly and Ben Lohse giving good assistance. The combined group was 5 minutes infront of the 5 minute group and 8 minutes infront of the fast moving scratch/block group. Scratch had caught the block bunch just after the descent of Marshall Mount on the first lap after some hard riding by Mal Haigh, Peter Jones and Guy Mathiske. With Haigh motivating the group along they were gradually hauling in the bunches infront. On the last descent of Marshall Mount the 12 minute group still had a lead of 31/2 minutes on the scratch group. The scratch bunch amalgamated with the last of the bunches between themselves and the 12 minute group at Yallah TAFE and powered on with the sniff of victory in the air. Makowski had been able to hold on and work with three of the 12 minute riders to be with the leaders as the entered the finishing straight. The chasing riders appeared in the finishing straight just as the front group started their sprint. The exhausted leaders powered on rather than sprinted with Wall winning from Makowski, Delahunty and Kelly. Jones was too quick for Mathiske and took out fastest time only 9 seconds behind the winners. Jason Johnson rounded out the top seven. There is no local race next weekend as the riders will travel up to Oakdale for race three in the Interclub series. Brendan Cato is in Adelaide at the moment racing in the second set of selection races for Australian Junior team for the World titles. He impressed the selectors in the Melbourne race and chosen to participate in a training camp in Tasmania. Saturday morning was a time trial with Cato coming in 12th. In the
afternoon there was a short road race in which he was quite aggressive
and came in 5th. Sunday's race was a hard 140km road race. Cato again
was aggressive in the early stages of the race. He attacked and took
out the KOM sprint about ¾ into the race and built up a small
break on the hard chasing bunch. He maintained the lead until the last
½km when he was swept up by the Pelton. There is another road
race on Tuesday morning. The selectors should certainly be taking notice
of his aggressive racing style which should help his chances of selection. St. George Cycling Club, established in 1920 and renowned in Australia for having produced the greatest numbers of international cycling stars, is continuing to enjoy great success at Oatley Park during the winter road season. Oatley Park, located in Hurstville City Council region and extremely central to St. Georgeās other great venues, Hurstville Oval and Kempt Field Criterium Circuit, has been a wonderful venue for just on fifty years for the club. Hurstville City Council allowed racing at the venue from 1953 and during the past 30 years the road racing has been conducted on a 3 kilometre circuit closed to vehicular traffic. The undulating terrain and winding roads with the famous hill ensures that the 24 kilometre handicap is a testing event for even the fittest of cyclists. The club has been enjoying a major increase in the numbers of contestants competing at Oatley Park this year and on Saturday the 7th of July four new club affiliations took the total of open riders to 150 for the season that have raced on the testing circuit. A free sausage sizzle and a few drinks capped another great day. Thanks Laurie Fitzpatrick and his able assistant Scott Mills for the barbeque. In a solid field of more than 50 riders in the annual West Tamar Classic, Pugh had all the right moves and read the race to perfection in holding out in-form A Grade cyclist Karl Menzies in a bunch sprint. Although not racing in handicap categories, riders were subject to timed gaps for the 76 km race held in the Beaconsfield/Beauty Point district. Pugh was among a talented group of middle markers, who started 11.30 minutes ahead of the scratch bunch. Third place went to Jai Crawford, riding from just 1.30 minutes. All-round cyclists Josh Simpson and Michael Ruffles and reigning Launceston Wheel winner Abram Manion all recorded top 10 placings. In junior racing, held earlier in the day in the same region, Kylie Cox, Wesley Sulzberger and Thomas Robinson won their respective age groups. Cycling Tasmania's 2001 road calendar continues the weekend of the 14 - 15 July with the annual P. E. Green Race at Cressy, while the Tour of Kentish will be held the following Saturday.
