Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club

Illawarra, June 30, 2001

Perfect winter weather saw a large number of riders attend the Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club 44.5km scratch races on Saturday 30th June, 2001.Most of the A grade riders agreed that their race was one of the best they could recall for a long time. The pace was on from the outset with wave after wave of attacks being launched from the bunch. Chris Brown and Guy Mathiske were particularly aggressive but it was Brendan Cato who succeeded in escaping on lap one of two.

Cato showed why he is the State U19 time trial champion by riding away and building a good lead. Behind him the attacks continued and the chase was frantic. Mathiske tried to bridge the gap to Cato but after riding solo for 10km had to return to the bunch. On the second climb up the steep side of Marshall Mount, Danny Hennessy displayed his climbing ability and led Mal Haigh, Lou Palermo and Mathiske over the summit. A group of seven riders were giving chase with Neil Williams, Brown and Adam Crowther desperately driving the group.

However the lead group of four were not going to be caught as they chased Cato at speeds exceeding 50kmh. Two kilometres from the finish Mathiske and Palermo skipped away to try and secure 2nd and 3rd, but Hennessy put in a strong turn to close the gap. Haigh immediately launched off his wheel form 600m out and rode strongly to take out second place from Palermo. But the day belonged to Cato who was congratulated for a most impressive solo victory.

The B grade race also had it's share of time trialing and frantic chasing. While the riders swapped off turns for the first half lap the pace wasn't really on until Jason Johnson put a big turn in on the descent of Marshall Mount. The ever-vigilant Joe Pereira was on his wheel but the big move came at the bottom of the hill when Scott Defina and Marks Scott counter attacked. The two riders, better known for their triathlon prowess, worked well together and built up a commanding lead of almost one and a half minutes on the chasers. But the group behind never gave up and continued to keep the pace high being driven along by Lionel Covington, Adam Hotchkis, Pereira and Johnson.

In the closing stages of the race the two leaders hit the wall and the chasing bunch was rewarded for their efforts by catching them in the last kilometre. Johnson led the sprint out and was not headed all the way to the line. Defina had enough left to take out second place from Pereira.

Six riders faced the starter in C grade, amongst them Mark Sebben was having his first race in a cycle bunch. The first half lap to Calderwood Road was at a controlled pace with everyone taking their turn. However, Alan McClelland ran into trouble when descending the steep side of Marshall Mount, he hit a large bump at speed and had to use the grass shoulder of the road before he regained control. In the mean time the bunch had ridden away leaving Alan to chase for the rest of the race. Climbing the steep side of Marshall Mount for the first time reduced the bunch to 4 - Peter Kelly, Mal Moss, Ben Lohse and Jeff Gray. This group worked together right up to the sprint finish. Moss did the initial lead out for the sprint until he was overtaken by the others, with the finish coming down to Kelly and Gray sprinting for honours. Gray proved too strong and won from Kelly, Moss and Lohse.

D grade had a good sized bunch which swapped off the turns quite well together, their race distance was 41.5km which meant they only had to climb the step side of Marshall Mount the once. After the climb a group of four slipped away from the others and it was clear that the winners were going to come from that group. A good pace was being maintained by Peter Vessel, Lou Jonceski and Jack Laajoki. Even though riders tried to get away they were unsuccessful as the others were keeping a close eye on proceedings. In the last kilometre there were a few surges which enabled Jonceski and Vessel to get clear. In a good close sprint Vessel was the winner, Jonceski second and Laajoki came in 7 seconds later for third.

Next week's race is a 44.5km handicap with group seven providing the marshals.

Sunday July 1st's morning ride is still gaining in popularity with twenty riders taking part this week. The riders were greeted by crisp cool conditions and quite a few patches of low mist until the sun burnt it off.

Carnegie Caulfield Pick-a-Part Handicap

Bayles, June 30 2001

A beautiful Melbourne winter's day greeted the 80 riders who turned out for the annual Pick-a-Part Handicap, sponsored by Melbourne's finest car parts salvage yard. Blue skies, no wind and a comfortable 15 degrees as close to heaven as it gets at this time of year.

Eight bunches set off over the 3 laps of a flat 30km circuit. The strong Scratch bunch gave away 25 minutes to Limit; the Scratchmen had come up short in both the Handicaps run earlier in the season would today be the day?

Ideal conditions saw fast pace generated by all riders. The first lap saw the time gaps between bunches diminish, before the 16 riders in the ‘Chopping Block' bunch (2nd Scratch) began to reel in the riders from the middle marks. Midway around the second lap, driven by regular strongmen Bruce Will, Geoff Whiter and Dennis Bowen-Day they had caught 3 groups, and were in sight of the 4th.

Behind them, Scratch was also on the charge, and overhauled the now unwieldy bunch 10km from the end of the second lap. Further up the road, the Limit riders had been caught by the following bunch, and under the vocal marshalling of Peter Barnett, John O'Sullivan and Graham 'Milo' Answerth, 11 riders maintained a 5min 30sec advantage with 1 lap to travel.

In the slight tailwind leg to Tynong, the outmarkers lost only 1 minute of their lead, but the determined Scratchmen made good time through Nar Nar Goon and were within 500m at the last corner, only 4km from home.

They were all together soon after, and the long straight finish saw riders from the Ashburton Cycles team start their lead out for current Australian Road Champion Robert Tighello too early, and one of the Club's in from riders, Michael Gill was fresh enough to come over the top and record a good win.

Second place went to Balance Owner Peter Zvedeniuk, in his first ride with the Club this season, ahead of a frustrated Tighello, Peter Barnett, Justin Hogan and Dennis Bowen-Day.

Debbie Hobbs and John O'Sullivan, as part of the unlucky 2nd Limit bunch, finished in the leading bunch to claim first Lady and first un-placed Veteran respectively.

CycleWest Junior Road Rage

Pickering Brook, WA, June 30, 2001

Travis Meyer of Helena Valley took a clean sweep at the third round of the CycleWest Junior Road Rage held in Pickering Brook on Saturday 30th June. Again excellent weather held out for the afternoon in which Travis won both the C Grade time trial and road race. His effort resulting in the gain of enough points to sit a comfortable second in the general classification just behind Tony Albertini of Guildford (both of the Midland Cycle Club).

In D Grade Megan Ryan has taken out her first win in the road race and collected herself plenty of points moving her from fourth to second overall. Ben, Renae and Justine Horsley continue the sibling rivalry with Renae putting in an excellent time trial to finish second behind Joe Albertini and in front of her younger brother Ben. Justine picked up fifth in the road race earning an extra seventy five points towards her position in the general classification.

A closely fought sprint saw Michael Fitzgerald of Northern Districts Cycle Club just over come Duanne Taddie Johanson on the line, Taddie with the advantage of racing on his club Southern Districts home turf. Again Alex Rexy Franzinelli showing his strength in the time trial winning by eight seconds ahead of Wesley Ham also of SDCC.

Adrian Lutey made his trip up from Narrogin worth his while by convincingly winning the A Grade road race ahead of Ben Miles and Jason Chilcott. In the time trial with very close times Jason finished in first position closely followed by Ben and a surprise ride by up and coming Steven Evans who took third.

Round Four of the CycleWest Junior Road Rage Series will take place on Saturday July 14th 2001 starting at the Lower Chittering Hall, Chittering Valley at 2 pm. For further details please contact CycleWest on lee57@optusnet.com.au

Devonport To Launceston

Tasmania, July 1

By Rod Morris

Senior Report

In the aspect of ages, it was the junior and the master who took line honours in the annual Devonport to Launceston Cycling Classic at the weekend. Reigning Launceston Wheelrace winner, Abram Manion, at just 17 years of age, held off a tremendous challenge from 1975 Austral Wheel champion, Craig Price, who is now well and truly in the veteran class, but riding like an enthusiastic teenager.

It was a class field that faced the starter for this feature event on Cycling Tasmania's road calender and while Manion and Price featured heavily in the overall placings, the third placed Kharne Hammersley also rode strongly. Another veteran, Michael Gargonini was fourth with Dale Woolston and Michael Johnston also recording top 10 finishes.

Belinda Goss, who leaves Australia shortly to compete in the World Junior Track Championships in America, won Category Five and also finished in the top 10.

Recent Launceston Tour winner, Karl Menzies won the elite Category One division, just ahead of former Rosebery Wheel and AJ Clarke Wheel winner, Daniel Cutting, with Hobart rider Steve Price in third place. The next major event on Cycling Tasmania's roster will be the West Tamar Classic next Sunday while a CA delegates meeting will be held in Deloraine this Thursday night.

Junior report

While the senior riders were battling overcast conditions in the annual Devonport to Launceston race, junior cyclists were treated to the testing Moriarty course at the weekend.

Cycling Tasmania, in conjunction with the Mersey Valley- Devonport Cycling Club staged successful races for riders of all age groups and categories on Sunday.

Launceston based Daniel Cameron produced his best performance from limited appearances in the 2001 road season, to win the Junior One event ahead of the fast finishing Wes Sulzberger, while Andrew Cox had to be content with third.

State track representative John Rayner showed a clean pair of pedals to the Junior Two race, but not before a great challenge from Grace Sulzberger and Nathan Jones.

In the youngest age group - Junior Three - Edward Robinson continued his steady improvement to win narrowly from Joel Morrison.

Murwillumbah Amateur CC road race

June 30, 2001

By Phil Ruge

Cool and overcast conditions greeted riders for Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club's road race on Saturday 30 June 2001.

A total of 44 riders lined up to contest 3 grades over the 60 kilometre long "flat course" which goes over to towards Tumbulgum before heading out through Chillingham to the foot of the Border Ranges and then returning to Dulguigan . This name is actually something of a misnomer as it is only the first 20 kilometres which are flat with the rest of the distance being undulating open road with a number of small but testing climbs to stretch the riders legs!

Both A and B Grades combined this week for their race. The 16 riders in this group set off at a fast pace. All were together until Chillingham on the outward leg when Ian ‘Crash' Walker and Paul Matthews attacked and opened up a workable break. The remaining riders worked well together but just couldn't pull them back. Unfortunately Matthews suffered a problem with his bike which left Walker to take out the race. Matthews was eventually caught several kilometres from the finish but still managed a creditable fifth place in the sprint finish. Other placegetters were Troy Stacey second,Graham Harvey third with Jeff Collier in fourth spot.

C Grade this week had a total of 15 riders in their event. This race was on from the start with a number of riders pushing the pace across the flat sections of the course. Even into the hills the speed remained high with a number of riders succumbing to the pace. This group remained largely intact and despite several late attacks lined up for a sprint finish. First home was Nathan Holland closely followed by Frank Schirmer with ‘Fast' Fred Mason in third place. The only woman in this event was Diane Monk who had ridden an excellent race to finish with the bunch.

A good field of 13 riders contested the D Grade event. Once again the speed of this race was high which saw riders gradually dropping off the bunch throughout the first half of the distance. A strong attack by Dave Toyer after Chillingham split up the remaining group with just 6 riders getting back together on the return run to Dulguigan. This group stayed together despite further attacks and lined up for a sprint finish. Rolli Tombillis looked to have race sewn up with Toyer hot on his heels but the‘old warhorse' Tom Allen overcame a gap of some 100 metres on the leading pair to take the race on the line. Second home was Tombillis with Dave Toyer in third spot. First woman home was Sandra Bury after another fine ride.

Racing next week is the monthly handicap over the full Tyalgum course. Start time is 2.00 pm and all riders are asked to be early to make the handicapper's job a little easier!

Randwick Botany CC road race

July 1, 2001

Photo finish at Heffron Park

By Tony Horneman

After several strong breakaways, Duncan Crosby took out the Randwick Botany Cycling Club A Grade 36km race at Heffron Park on Saturday 30 June 2001 in a time of 59 minutes 42 seconds, second was Tony Iannacito and third place went to Randwick Botany A Grader Ross Mackay.

Judging the B Grade 32km event was a challenge due to 5 riders sprinting for the finish line side-by-side at almost 60kmh. In a photo finish, David Jackson scrapped home in a winning time of 50 minutes 55 seconds, only half a wheel ahead of Randwick Botany rider Dean Preddy with Warwick Goldsmith third. The average speed for the race was 38kmh.

Eighteen riders contested the 28km C Grade criterium race, with an exciting bunch sprint to the line. Under 17 rider Liam Fletcher made it home first in a time of 47 minutes 5 seconds. Second was Brad Lane followed by Rob Fullarton. New Randwick Botany Club member Andrew Richards finished just out of the placings.

Bankstown Sports Club rider Paul Dimitriou set the pace in the D Grade 20km event, but Lindsay Monks powered home to win in a time of 34 minutes 3 seconds. Neil Morris was second and Kane Baker third. Andrew Pike won the E Grade 14km race in a time of 32 minutes 6 seconds followed by Norman Jew and John Lynch.

Junior rider numbers where down, due to several Randwick Botany riders competing in junior open events this weekend. Thirteen juniors competed in 4 events starting with the Junior 2km Time Trial, which was won by Liam Fletcher in a time of 3 minutes 7 seconds. Second fastest was Michael Murdoch, 3 minutes 27 seconds and third was Chris Young, 3 minutes 24 seconds.

The junior A Grade 14km race was won by Liam Fletcher with Michael Murdoch second. Junior B Grade 12km race was taken out by Robert Remedious followed by Thom Richards and Belinda Angwin. Junior C Grade 6km race was won by Tyron Davies with Morgan Stokes second and Antoine Rosse third.

The next Randwick Botany Cycling Club race will be conducted at Heffron Park on Saturday 7 July 2001. Juniors start at 1pm and Seniors 2.30pm. For more information about the club, please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307
