Stage profile and map Results Live report Stage 6 - January 21: City of Adelaide Circuit, 90 kmMacca magic again as O'Grady finally triumphsBy Jeff Jones Any chances of a controlled, processional finish to the 3rd Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under certainly did not occur, after yesterday's GC tie between Kai Hundertmarck and Stuart O'Grady. The onus was on Telekom to defend his jersey, and the other riders to attack, and attack they did in this spectacular finale. By the finish, the crowd was treated to some more 'Macca Magic' as Linda McCartney's David McKenzie took the stage solo in front of Ben Day and Luca Paolini. They were given an even bigger boost when Stuart O'Grady crossed the line virtually glued to Kai Hundertmarck's wheel, the overall winner of the JCTDU. The three riders that were really vying for the overall honours were Hundertmarck, O'Grady and Fabio Sacchi. As such, Telekom, Credit Agricole and Saeco were seen at the head of the peloton early on, trying to mould the race in their own way. A small break escaped on the first lap, placing pressure on Saeco and Credit Agricole to chase, but they brought it back before the first sprint on lap 8 (km 36). Sprint leader Graeme Brown had punctured 2 laps prior to the sprint. His whole United Water team dropped back for him and brought him back to the bunch. He managed to work his way to the front in time to challenge for the points, but only succeeded in leading out Stuart O'Grady for second place, putting O'Grady in virtual yellow by 2 seconds. Telekom failed in its job to get Hundertmarck up, as Danilo Hondo took the sprint win. In third place was Fabio Sacchi who therefore moved to within one second of Hundertmarck. After the sprint, the race broke up completely. A leading group of approximately 20 formed, containing no riders who could threaten the GC. They rode out to a three minute gap, as O'Grady monitored Sacchi and Hundertmarck in the chasing group. The German team were burdened by mechanical problems, including a puncture to Hundertmarck, making their task to recapture the yellow even more difficult. The leaders split again with approximately 25 kilometres left, with a group of nine including David McKenzie, Jay Sweet (Big Mat), Ben Day (Sunsmart) and Luca Paolini (Mapei) riding away from the rest. Sweet was the best sprinter, but he was also tired from his constant attacks and David McKenzie took his chance and attacked on the climb with one and a lap laps remaining. He had a 300 metre lead with 1 lap (4.5 kilometres) to go, and there was no real cohesion in the group to chase him down. To an absolutely deafening cheer from the crowd, he rode up the final straight a winner, much to the delight of his Linda McCartney team. He spoke to cyclingnews.com directly after the race: "I'm stoked!. Neil (Stephens) gave me the freedom to have a bit of a race and I went for it. Being a stage winner in the Giro was great but it is quickly forgotten. It's 2001 and they look at you as someone else." "I went with one and a half laps to go on the main hill. I went through there flat out, and I just held it. It was a small enough group to stay away from." Were you worried about Jay Sweet? "Yeah, him and a few others." How do you feel about O'Grady's win? "It's awesome to have an Aussie win on the last day, and it's awesome to have an Aussie win the whole race. It was perfect." As for O'Grady, he achieved the perfect win after coming so close all week. "Firstly I'd like to thank Jacob's Creek and the Tour Down Under organisation for having dream that came reality," he said. "A few years ago who would have believed that we'd have world champions here, all these big hitter guys." "To race on home ground with support like this, how can I not win. If I don't win, I'd get shot! It's been awesome, the support on the roads. It's been a huge inspiration to have all those little towns with people turning out. What's happening next? "Unfortunately I go to freezing France on Tuesday [crowd noise]...yeah boo exactly. Boo really loudly because my boss is around the corner and doesn't want me to stay here any longer!" However, O'Grady has at least started the year on a very positive note, and will certainly be in good shape for the early season classics - once his body gets used to being in 30 degree cooler temperatures.
