Stage profile and map Results Live report Stage 5 - January 20: Gawler - Tanunda, 156 kmBarossa PearlBy Jeff Jones The historic Barossa Valley is South Australia's best known wine region, as well possessing a rich and deeply rooted German culture. It was therefore fitting today that one of Germany's favourite cycling sons, Kai Hundertmarck, took the honours for stage five from Gawler to Tanunda. In doing so, Hundertmarck also gained the yellow jersey, although he is now on equal time with Credit Agricole's Stuart O'Grady. There was absolutely no let up to the baking heat today, with temperatures in the high 30's, and even hotter in the bright sunshine. Adding to the misery was a strong wind that blew the riders in every direction as they twisted and turned through the wineries of the Barossa. That didn't deter the crowds of course, who were spotted in abundance on the sides of the roads drinking unwooded Chardonnay as the race passed by. The first riders to try their luck in the opening kilometres included Christophe Agnolutto (Ag2R), Jay Sweet (Big Mat), Alexandre Chouffe (Big Mat), Crescenzo d'Amore (Mapei), Allan Davis (United Water), Trent Wilson (Sunsmart), Juan Carlos Dominguez (Linda McCartney), Bruce Mcintosh (United Water), and Russel Van Hout (Uni of SA). They slowly rode away to a lead that hovered between 4 and 5 minutes, with no one really willing to chase in the bunch. At one point, Crescenzo d'Amore (Mapei) was the leader on the road - but not by too much and it didn't look as though he would hold it. The first time up the steep, 1 kilometre climb of Menglers Hill (km 78.3), the cracks started to show in the break as well as back in the bunch. The fierce heat took a heavy toll as rider after rider dropped back to the team cars for water. Some strong riding came from Russell Van Hout (Uni SA) earned him the most aggressive rider award, and he was the last rider to be recaptured by the peloton with 15 kilometres to go. However, the second climb of Menglers Hill (km 131) had proved to be too much for yellow jersey wearer, Nicolaj Bo Larsen (CSC) who "simply ran out of legs" as he related afterwards. He rode his hardest, but couldn't keep up with the 22 rider leading group that had ridden away on the hill, driven by four Credit Agricole riders. But once again in the closing kilometres, the Green and White train could not use their numbers to maximum advantage, as Stuart O'Grady finished well out of the time bonuses in 10th place. The principal reason for this was a late attack by danger man, Daniele Nardello, forcing Credit Agricole to expend themselves chasing. Instead, Telekom's Kai Hundertmarck grabbed the stage, emulating his compatriot Erik Zabel who won here in Tanunda last year. A German victory in a German region, and now a German yellow jersey wearer as Hundertmarck was given it ahead of O'Grady. The heat didn't seem to bother the shaven headed, goateed German veteran: "It was very hot today but we did some good training rides before the tour while we had this hot weather. I like the heat - so I was already a little bit adapted to it." The crucial cut came on Menglers Hill, where "we saw the leader [Larsen] wasn't with us, so we were all pulling. In the end it ran very well for me in the sprint." And now the yellow jersey with just one stage left. Was that the plan? "No, it was not a plan. The team worked very well, and I just wanted to ride well to keep my place in the top five," he said. "I was already happy with the second stage where I got third, and I just wanted to keep my place. But I won today, and it was a surprise for me also." "I think the whole team will be motivated. I'm going to try to keep it," he added, and it certainly will be an exciting finale in Adelaide tomorrow. With two 3-2-1 time bonuses for the intermediate sprints, and a 6-4-2 bonus for the stage win, anything can happen. There are 8 riders within 8 seconds of yellow, and O'Grady, Sacchi, Nardello, Botcharov, and Jonker are all in with a chance. Of course, the perfect finish for the South Australians would be an O'Grady win. He commented after the stage today that it was "not exactly the plan I'd hoped for, but it's the organisers dream I suppose. I hope for a good day tomorrow."
