Stage profile and map Results Live report Stage 3 - January 18: McLaren Vale - Victor Harbor, 165 kmO'Grady fights backBy Jeff Jones Popular favourite, Stuart O'Grady has snatched back the lead in the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under, after again gaining a podium finish in today's third stage. Although only a two second gap, the psychological advantage may help the freckled South Australian over the final three stages as he attempts to win his second Tour Down Under. The honours of the day belonged to Saeco again, as blond haired Alessio Galletti won the stage after an impressive 156 kilometre breakaway. The seaside town of Victor Harbor hosted the finish, and once again a huge crowd turned out to watch the action. This was the case for the entire day, as right from the start in the wine district of McLaren Vale, scores of people lined the route. Street parties, colourful balloons, and decorated bicycles were just some of the sights on offer as the convoy travelled around the Fleurieu Peninsula. Unfortunately for the riders, there was a strong head-cross wind for much of the day, and when Uni of SA's Steve Cunningham rolled off the front at kilometre 9, only Saeco's Alessio Galletti went up to join him. Cunningham said afterwards that he didn't realise the peloton were in "go slow mode", but it became quickly evident as the time gap grew. The only King of the Mountain of the day was the long steady grind up Sellick's Hill (km 30). Cunningham crested first with Galletti in tow, and the pair were already 5 minutes in front. Their gap grew to a maximum of 15:45 at kilometre 74, just after the feed zone in Delamere. The riders in the peloton were biding their time, as the leading pair were absolutely no threat to the GC, and they rolled along together. Galletti decided to take his chance at kilometre 95, when he rode away on a small hill. "When Cunningham went early I went but I didn't believe we'd pull it off or keep going that far. As the race went on, Cunningham tired with 70 kilometres to go. I went by myself and decided to attack," he said. "Again, I was not sure about it, but in the last couple of kilometres I believed it." Cunningham paid for his efforts and was caught by the pack with 10 kilometres to go, just before they turned at Goolwa for the run back to Victor Harbor. Galletti's final gap was just 3:18, but all eyes were on who was going to take second place and a valuable time bonus in the bunch sprint. Stage one winner, Graeme Brown (United Water), led Stuart O'Grady home by a bike length, and O'Grady's bonus was enough to take the yellow jersey from Fabio Sacchi (Saeco). Afterwards, O'Grady commented on the stage, which was a tough slog into a headwind for much of the day. "When it's not for the win obviously everyone is subdued, not in killing mode," he said "At 60-70 to go, we knew it was too late...Galletti could have pushed himself in a wheelchair and still won." Now he has the yellow: "Yeah it would have been nice to win on the first night, but that would have meant we were in the yellow a bit early. In the long run, it's probably better having it in the last few days." Do you think you'll get there? "I'm hoping...it's a long way to go."
