Stage profile and map Results Live report Stage 1 - January 16: Glenelg Street Race, 47 kmBrown starts with a bangBy Jeff Jones Aspiring Australian sprinter, Graeme Brown (United Water-AIS) has started his campaign in the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under in the same style as he finished the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic last year - with a confident, aggressive stage win. Brown outsprinted local legend, Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) and Saeco's Fabio Sacchi, with a large and appreciative crowd in attendance. The 1.88 kilometre circuit was built for speed, with just 5 corners per lap, and the pace was on from the gun. After some early race nerves had settled, Australia's Michael Rogers (Mapei) took off on a long escape. Rogers won a stage and wore the yellow jersey last year, and was keen to do so again. He stayed away until he won the first sprint, before being chased down by aggressive Uni SA rider, Kristjan Snorrasson. The pair held a 10 second gap for some laps, but were gradually being reeled in by the efforts of the Big Swede, Magnus Backstedt (CA). Backstedt dragged them back before the second sprint at 20 laps, won by Graeme Brown (United Water) from Peter Rogers (Sunsmart), with Michael Rogers hanging on for third. There were now only five laps to go, and the speed stretched the peloton to breaking point. Some - like Jeroen Blijlevens and Salvatore Commesso - had already been dropped, but up front it was Bobby Julich leading the way for O'Grady, with Saeco also strong. Then, with one lap to go a three man Linda McCartney Jacob's Creek Train suddenly materialised, leading Graeme Brown and Stuart O'Grady. This turned out to be a perfect lead out for Brown and O'Grady, although it wasn't exactly what the McCartneys had in mind. Their man Ciaran Power, took fourth place, but the podium of the day went to Brown, O'Grady and Sacchi. They celebrated their victory under a beautiful sunset by Glenelg's seaside, complete with accompanying fireworks. "This is definitely a career best," said Brown. "Last year I came second and it gave me a real taste. It was a very quick circuit. I always had the intention of going for the sprint jersey and trying to be there for the finish." "I wasn't going too good at the start, but came good at the end. You have goals and you set yourself another," he added. "Adelaide is unbelievable for sport. Last year I was on the podium and it was the biggest thrill." The overall leader's jersey was awarded to Brown, although there were no time bonuses. Brown also leads the sprint classification, but the jersey was given to Michael Rogers for the time being. Most aggressive rider was Kristjan Snorrasson, who featured early in the race as well as in the long break with Rogers. The best placed U23 rider was Gene Bates (UniSA), while Dominique Rault (Big Mat) scored the KOM jersey on a count back from last year.
