Anna Millward won her first race of the 2001 Skilled Bay Cycling Classic, wrapping up the series title in doing so. She staged a long breakaway with Queensland's Sara Carrigan and was able to finish solo, giving her the maximum 12 points to claim the overall title, her fourth ever Skilled Bay series championship. Her Jayco-VIS team had planned to keep the race together to give Millward another chance at a bunch sprint. However Sara Carrgigan attacked halfway through the race and Millward went with her, seeing an opportunity. The two drew away from the field, with Rochelle Gilmore's NSWIS team unable to close it down and that was the end of it. On the last lap, Millward went clear of Carrigan to win the race. Series leader Bridget Evans had the misfortune to crash out of the race with two laps to go, and finished third overall, while today's third placed Rochelle Gilmore moved into second. The green jersey for best sprinter went to Jayco's Katie Mactier. Men - Henderson takes the last race
After Robbie McEwen wrapped up the overall title yesterday, he did not risk anything for the final race and sat in the bunch for the duration, protected by his Crown Casino teammates. This left the race a little more open than previously, and again a breakaway succeeded. Kiwi Greg Henderson (Balance), Matt Wilson (Fitzroy), Robert Tighello (Puegeot), and Peter Dawson (WAIS) were some of the 10 riders who managed to lap the field, with the win eventually going to Henderson in solo fashion. In second place was Wilson, while Dawson claimed third. Peter Dawson's namesake Brent had already clinched the sprinter's jersey the previous day, despite the attempts from Kristjan Snorrasson to gain it back.
