Skilled Bay Cycling Classic - NEAustralia, January 3-7, 2001Main Page Results Previous day Race 4 - January 6th Geelong - 12.30 pmWomen - Tense finale brewingIt's going to come right down to the wire in front of Geelong's Crown Casino tomorrow in the women's series championship, as the top three riders are all within three points of each other. Bridget Evans held onto her slender lead over Anna Millward and Rochelle Gilmore, but any one of these riders could win tomorrow. Today's race was held on a tight 500m circuit in Geelong, on a cool summer's day with a strong wind blowing. After the first sprint was won by Emma James (NSW), yesterday's winner Jeannette Schwarz took off and established a 10 second gap. However, her escape came to nothing before sprint 2 after she crashed, but was able to rejoin the pack. Emma James tried another move towards the end, but was caught with one lap to go. However it was the "Tassie Devil" Naomi Williams' and WA's Hayley Rutherford who staged a successful move to stay away and win, with Willaims taking the honours. Rochelle Gilmore won the bunch sprint, Millward took fourth, and Evans fifth - closing the gap at the top of the leaderboard with one race to go. Men - McEwen secures GC, Suckling wins the dayRobbie McEwen has won this year's Skilled Bay Cycling Classic after a hattrick of wins in the first three races and an 8th placing today. His 13 point lead over Graeme Brown (Woolmark-AIS) is unassailable, and he spent much of the race today watching Brown. The wind had died a little for the men's race, and it was an late move from five riders that was successful today. Scott Suckling (Brumby's/WAIS), Andrew Torney, Matt Wilson (both Fitzroy Cycles), Jens Mouris (Sanitarium), and Cameron Jennings (Woolmark) escaped after the second sprint, and were allowed to gain ground by Robbie McEwen's team as none of them posed a threat to the GC. The five held a 25 second advantage on the peloton until Kristjan Snorrasson (who fell hard yesterday) bridged the gap in an impressive effort. He caught the leaders with five to go, to eventually finish fourth but is now out of the running for the green sprinters jersey, which was secured today by Brent Dawson. Scott Suckling was clearly the best sprinter in the group and he won it from Matt Wilson and Jens Mouris. McEwen was pipped by Graeme Brown for 7th and 8th, but it was academic after the break had escaped. Robbie McEwen will fly out of Australia on Monday or Tuesday to join his Domo-Farm Frites team in Europe. He will not therefore be contesting the Melbourne-Sorrento on Wednesday, the Australian Championships on Sunday or the Tour Down Under next week.
