Skilled Bay Cycling Classic - NEAustralia, January 3-7, 2001Main Page Results Previous day Race 3 - January 5th: Apollo Bay - 12.30 pmApollo Bay, some 220 kilometres south of Melbourne, was the venue for race three of the Skilled Bay Cycling Classic. The circuit was a little different than the first two, 1 kilometre long and containing a hill. There was not a great deal of wind, but the temperature was still warm.
Women - NSW trio escapeWith two races gone and Anna Millward and Bridget Evans tied on points for the lead, the major players in the women's field were watching each other today. An early move by NSW rider Emma James saw her ride solo for the first 20 minutes of the race, whilst the NSWIS and Jayco-VIS took it in turns to attack and counter back in the field. This eventually proved beneficial for three riders - the early attacker Emma James, who was joined by Margaret Hemsley (NSWIS) and the comparatively unknown Jeannette Schwarz from Dubbo in NSW. The three attacked with 5 laps to go and Jayco-VIS did not close it. At the finish, Schwarz outsprinted Hemsley and James to take the win, with series leader Bridget Evans winning the bunch sprint for 4th. This meant that she gained some ground on Millward, who could only finish 7th today. Men - McEwen unstoppable nowThe third race of the men's series was one of the best so far, with fortunes swinging back and forth to eventually land in Robbie McEwen's favour. The race came down to a bunch sprint, won again by a superbly consistent McEwen from Graeme Brown (Woolmark-AIS) and Hilton Clark Jr (Skilled Development). The race was as usual, aggressive from the outset, with Scott Sunderland and Brad Davidson being involved in an important breakaway early in the race. After this was reeled in, the pace was kept high and the battle for the intermediate sprints continued. Fighting hard to regain the green jersey was Kristjan Snorrasson (Balance) - too hard as it turned out when he crashed heavily into one of the barriers. This assisted Brent Dawson (NSWIS) in increasing his lead in that competition, and the criterium/track specialist has almost secured the jersey now. Towards the end of the race there was a valiant attempt to break away by Jamie Drew (Jayco), but he could not manage to hold off the charging bunch and in particular Robbie McEwen. McEwen's teammate, Nick Gates gave a perfect lead out on the last lap to set him up for a hattrick of wins, and he now has secured the overall series championship.
