In what is proving a hard-fought battle for sprinting dominance between the big teams, Paolo Bettini secured Mapei-Quickstep their first victory of the 2001 Tour de Langkawi by winning the 177.3 kilometre stage 3 from Kota Bharu to Kuala Terengganu. Mercury, another contender in the frame, managed to keep the race leader's yellow jersey firmly on the shoulders of Jans Koerts with some strong team riding.

Still recovering from the previous day's mountain stage on departing Kota Bharu, the peloton immediately found itself driving into a headwind, conditions that would dominate minds and bodies all day.

A 137 km break by Dane Soren Petersen (Saturn) and Canadian Svein Tuft (Canada) provided much of the day's entertainment for spectating crowds, both human and animal. Sensing that the peloton was in no mood for hard work so early in the stage, the pair made their move at 4 km gone and soon established a commanding lead.

By the time they reached the day's first sprint after 14.2 km, won by Tuft, their lead was 1'42". At the 60 kilometre mark the lead had extended to 12'26", putting them nearly 8 km in front of the bunch. This was the maximum the peloton seemed willing to tolerate and lighter by two riders, Bjarke Neilsen (CSC World-Online) and Ludovic Martin (Credit Agricole) who had abandoned, it began to cut into the breakaway's lead .

By the time they had reached the second sprint at 74 km, again won by Tuft, the duo 's margin was down to 8 minutes but they were managing to hold it steady, despite the peloton speeding along at 60kph. At the feedzone, 88.5 kilometres into the race, Tuft and Petersen had even managed to claw back some of their losses to stand at 8'35".

The gain was short-lived and the leaders were losing an unlucky 13 seconds a kilometre to the chasing peloton. Tuft made it a hat-trick at the day's third sprint with 129.7 km covered. At 140 km it was almost all over with Tuft and Petersen sitting up to wait for the peloton. By 141 km the longest break of the Tour so far is history.

With 30 km remaining the peloton strung out in a long line. Most of the work was being done by Alexia Alluminio, Panaria and Mercury. At 158 km Cory Lange (Canada) attacked but despite managing a lead of 16" he was reeled in by 164 km.

By the time the peloton had just three kilometers to go, Mobilvetta was attempting to drive the bunch. With 1.5 kilometres to go, Mercury reasserted itself but constant forays by Mapei made it impossible for Mercury to establish control.

In the closing metres Ivan Quaranta (Alexia) made a move for the line but appeared to mis-time his attempt, leaving Bettini and Alexandre Usov (Phonak) to take first and second on the line. Jans Koerts who completed the stage in 29th place, suggested "Quaranta came out too early, and didn't take into account the head wind. I think we all found it hard after yesterday's [mountain] stage, and the wind made it even more difficult".

Mapei's Directeur Sportif Fabrizio Fabbri said that "Bramati increased the pace with 4 kilometres to go before the finish, stretching the group. In the last kilometre, Lanfranchi, Nocentini and Aggiano opened the path and Paolo was able to find the right space to the victory like a real sprinter!"

"This victory in Kuala Terengganu is dedicated to my wife Monica. It is my first success after my wedding!" said Bettini of his 13th professional win.

Koerts' lead in the race has extended to 10 seconds thanks to time bonuses gained at the hot spot sprints. Bettini has joined Enrico Degano of Panaria in second spot pushing Gorden Fraser into fourth. The day's heroes Petersen and Svein finished in the bunch in 54th and 128th respectively.

New Zealander Graeme Miller keeps his 9th place on General Classification, while Tom Leaper (Panaria) is the highest placed Australian in 45th place, just 42" off the race leader.

While a battle royal for the stage win was taking place at the front of the peloton, at the rear 8 riders were already picking up the pieces of a nasty crash. Japanese rider Yoshimasa Hirose victim of the jostling of any bunch sprint hit the ground heavily along with the seven other riders. He was taken to hospital with a broken elbow, while the other riders, which include Daniel Spence and Neil MacDonald of South Africa, were able to remount and in various states of damage make it over the finish line. Malaysian rider Mohammed Mahazir Hamad, face gashed, almost immediately joined Hirose for the same.

Hirose's retirement means that the of the 173 riders who started the Tour in Alor Setar, 164 will be in a gathering for the start of the 135.5 km Stage 4 from Dungan to Kuantan.
