Belgian Nico Eeckhout has managed to win the overall classification of the Etoile de Bessèges after leading from the first stage. Eeckhout placed out of the top 10 in the final stage, but had enough time bonuses in hand to be secure. The stage was won by Festina's Florent Brard, who continued the good form that the younger French riders have shown during the race. The final stage that started and finished in Bessèges was marked by a seven man breakaway that escaped at kilometre 20 and contained Brard, Plouhinec (Jean Delatour), Talabardon (BigMat-Auber), Bessy (Credit Agricole), Fabrice Salanson (Bonjour), Peter Farajzin (Cofidis), and Daniel Schnider (Francaise des Jeux). By the 100th kilometre, they had three minutes, but Lotto, Lampre and Collstrop brought them back. The fugitives stayed away until the last kilometre, but Brard launched himself early and held off the bunch sprint, winning by 20 metres.
Festina's director, Yvon Sanquer said that his team's second stage win was the result of a good winter season where they held three training camps since December. "It is one of the reasons for our success, but it is also due to the state of mind that has pervaded the French peloton. It seems confidence is returning bit by bit," he said. Eeckhout described the win as the best of his 14 career wins, and hoped that he would not be so dependent on Belgian kermesse racing in future.
