Loren Hansen (Att Wireless) rises to the occasion with a 3rd place on the day behind the perrenial powerhouse, Dale Knapp (Kona/Voicestream) to win the overall men's title while Jonny Sundt (K2) wins the day in style. Ann Grande (Kona/Voicestream) took the win and with the double points squeeked ahead of Kristie Berg (JF2) by 3 points to win the series overall for the women.
The most dramatic race was Masters A, where a lead group of 5 stayed together till the road sprint finish. Was I in Europe? The open grass playfields and the smell of embrocation in the bathrooms signaled a new era in NW Cross. You could pass on 90% of this open course with a long road section for the start and final sprint that has "World Cup" written all over it.
Please take a second and fire off an e-mail to Kurt Reuter at Federal Way Parks. Thank him for letting us use this wonderful park.
It was a day of drama. As we all know, it is the people who make racing great, and the little rivalries and history between racers all came to a boil yesterday as double points were on the line and nothing was held back in many close battles for season placings.
Nowhere was this more obvious than the Masters A race, which was won in spectacular fashion by Randy Daniels (Ti Cycles). Lap after lap the lead group came through the start finish together, dropping riders as the speed increased, until it was down to 5.
Series leader Jim "Big Daddy" Brown (RAD Racing), 2 time national Champion Tim Rutledge (REDLINE), Dan Peterson (Aurora), Robert Dunn-Ballinger (Bianchi) and Randy Daniels (Ti Cycles) made the final selection and tested each other with attacks the last half of the race, but it wasn't until the final 2 minutes that the race was decided.
At a barrier leading into a stiff run-up Mr. Daniels made a move and then proceeded to open a 50 ft. gap that he fought for through a woodsy section, through the grass playfields and onto the 300 yard. finishing straight. Once he hit the pavement, he buried his head and didn't look back. He held it all the way to the line and managed to stay ahead of the charging group of 4. Dan Peterson starting the sprint for 2nd, but it wasn't till 20 ft. from the line that Big Daddy Jim Brown moved from the shadow of the pack in classic sprinter fashion and overtook Peterson for 2nd, and the series title. Wow, what a race.
Another new race course, another day of clear skies and temps in the 40's with Mt. Rainier looming large on the horizon until the Elite men raced, which finally brought the clouds and rain as if on schedule to the final stop in the REI/Novara Seattle Metro Cross Series. Jonny Sundt counterattacked Aaron Menenberg (TiCycles) who took it out from the gun, and then proceeded to reel in the finish line for a solo win with a comfortable margin ahead of Dale Knapp and Loren Hanson. Ron Shmeer raced well, as this race blew apart and no two riders finished together, finishing 4th on the day, and 3rd overall.
In the killer B's, it was all Alvin Nucum (Biachi) who won the day, and the series ahead of the consistent riding of Michael Murdin, 2nd for day which earned him 2nd overall for the season. Mike Jancola rode his heart out and it was enough to get him some much needed points and keep him in 3rd overall. 4th for the year was Sean Maynard, and uber papa Mark Howlett took 5th. Thanks to the hardest working men in Cross.
The women's B's saw a similar scenario as Nicola Mann kept her winning streak alive and stayed ahead of a strong charge by overall winner and 2nd place on the day Kathy Smith (TiCycles). Joyce LaGow (Armondo's) fought hard and finished 3rd for the day and 3rd overall.
Master B's was also a very dramatic battle. Two REI riders broke away from the group and proceeded to work together to establish a nice lead and move into the top 6 for the series. As the final lap came to a close, in a mini version of the Master A race, it was Pat Weiler (REI/Novara) who put the afterburners on and showed the hard working Dan Levine (REI/Novara) a clean pair of wheels as he hit the pavement and held it to the line for a great sprint win which moved him up into 4th overall for the year.
It was the closest battle of any category for overall bragging rights, the top 3 separated by only 1 point each!!! It was Bob Acteson who's excellent riding and 3rd place for the day gave him the slimmest of possible margins for total victory. 4 places behind Bob on the day was Tom Holmes, who knew when to make it count and every pedal stroke counted today as he earned 2nd place overall, also by 1 thin point. 3rd in the Series went to Jim Clevinger, who was the guy finishing just in front of Tom today. Mark Reudink held onto 5th overall-also by 1 point. Wow, what a nail biter.
Wanda Howlett, matriarch of the luckiest family in NW cycling, took home the gold in the Women's Masters race and had little competition all season. The Howlett family has managed to win both raffle bikes this season, at Steilacoom it was the REDLINE BMX bike, and today it was the REI BUZZ bike we had all been lusting after the whole season. Santa obviously comes early to the Howlett's household.
In the single speed category, it was a great day for Adrian "37 in inseam" Hegyvary, but not quite great enough, as he missed out on 1st place overall by 1 point as he finally found his best form and beat season champion Jesse Carbaugh. Mr. Style Matt Kanaly sends a shout out to everyone wishing the whole crew a good holiday break after a great season of cross. He finished 3rd in the series.
For the beginning category, showing new depth of talent this season, it was great racing in both the men's and women's categories. With new courses which are less technical, we had 56 men garner series points, but it was the consistent riding of Justin Pierce that won him overall victory. Winning the day for the men and clinching 3rd overall was a fantastic ride by the quickly improving Jeff Moran. August Wheeler (Husky Racing) had a brilliant first season and finished 2nd overall, David Karman was 4th and Brian Volkert was 5th.
Jodi Hess was dominant for the women, winning the day and the series with a comfortable margin. Jadine Riley is another fast learner who raced very consistently and took 2nd overall. The young Leana Gerrard (JF2) took 3rd for the year, with Cindy Choudhry and Paige Beckley 4th and 5th respectively. We will look forward to seeing both Jodi and Jeff and the rest of the top 5 in the B's next season!
The juniors were the other big story this season, with record number of new kids suiting up, and laying it down for glory, adoring fans, REI water bottles and Rice Crispy treats, the noon hour was always filled with quality entertainment for the whole family.
All the seasons hard work came down to this final day of the series before some of our racers head off to Nationals in Baltimore in 2 weeks. Top of the list in the Junior A's is Collin Carbaugh (RAD Racing), followed by teammate Stephen Howard (RAD Racing) and Tucker Thomas (RAD Racing). And of course the two guys who round out the podium for top 5 on the season are also RAD racers, Mike Wentz and Devin Anderson. RAD is rad!
In the junior B's it was Walker Duval with the win, Josh Hansen with 2nd and Jonathan Jennerjahn with 3rd overall. Aaron Wilkinson was 4th with Chris Buckley finishing out the top 5 overall. This was a tough category with 22 kids getting season points.
For the very competitive junior C's, where the big kids do a whole lap of the main race course, it was Travis Guthrie taking the series victory by 2 points over hardboy Spencer Mahan (REI) who finished 2nd on the day behind wunderkid Grady Weiler (REI) who in only 2 races moved himself into the top 7 overall. 3rd in the series went to one of the more consistent placers, Brendon Anderson, with Garrett Anderson taking 4th with an even 100 points, just ahead of Bryan Gravar. We paid the top 10 cold hard cash, with the top 3 getting $10, and 4-10th place getting that $5 spot.
The Marymoor Velodrome Association (MVA) is volunteer based non-profit 501 C3 organization that is always looking for volunteers, funding and ways to improve the racing we bring to you. Please contact Craig Undem at 206-938-1091 with ideas or contributions.
BIG Thankyou to: Pat Bentson, the Hardest working man in cross, for creating great new races this year. Jerry Baker, for making the world go around. RAD Racing and it's many supporters for set up, tear down and great race concessions. Dave Wamsley and his Red Trailer, for set up, break down, and announcing. Our great officials, especially Jay and Joan, the backbone. Tim Otway, our EMT on a bike. And finally, all the teams and individuals who set up tents, changed in their cars and made the scene what it is.
Hyun Lee sent these pics of yet another Washington state mudfest.
