Commentary

By Daniel Marszalek

Malopolski Wyscig Gorski is a hilly profile race, held in the South-East part of Poland (Krakow region). This year was its 39th edition which consisted of five stages: a prologue criterium, three mountain stages and a 30km long ITT. The race is considered one of the country's toughest and is quite prestigious on Polish calendar — certainly it has more tradition than most of the 2.5 category races that are held on Polish soil at the moment, but strangely it has no UCI points. Nevertheless, this year's race attracted the best Polish teams to the start at Krakow Old Market; they treated MWG as an important step in their preparations for the Tour of Poland (cat. 2.3) in early September.

This edition was won by Zbigniew Piatek, a 35 year-old rider from the Mroz-Supradyn team, who became the first cyclist to win it three times with his victories in 1989 (!) and 1998.
