Preview

At the moment the most important event going on in Poland is the Malopolski Wyscig Gorski, the 38th edition of this race. At one time it was quite prestigious, possibly the third most important stage race after the Peace Race and the Tour of Poland in this country. Now, despite being occasionally given a 2.5 category rating, at the moment it's only 2.12. It is still a valuable test for all five Polish professional teams before the most important event on the national calendar, the Tour of Poland (Dookola Polski) ranked 2.3. and held in early September.

Prologue - August 9: Old Market Criterium, Krakow, 58 km

The prologue was a criterium in Krakow's Old Market - 77 laps of a 750 metre circuit. The event was dominated by Mroz-Supradyn Witaminy riders, Piotr Wadecki coming out victorious. There was a leader's jersey at stake, but no times for GC taken, as the race was on points only.

Stage 1 - August 10: Makow Podhalanski - Jordanow, 195 km

Stage 1 on Thursday took some 80 riders from Makow Podhalanski to Jordanow, 195 km with 3 GPM, including twice up the Krowiarki pass (1012m), raced from each side. Early on, eight riders got away, although the group was later split due to the tough terrain. Seven of them managed to take top placings on the day. Best of them was Pawel Niedzwiecki, a 26-years old stagiaire from the Mroz team, who gained more than 2'00 on peloton that contained yesterday's leader Piotr Wadecki.

Stage 2 - August 11: Myslenice-Myslenice, 127 km

Stage 2 was 127 kms around Myslenice with 3 GPMs, including twice up the steep and cobbled ascent in Wieliczka (at 35 and 91 km). It ended in a 29-man group finish, and another win for Pawel Niedzwiecki. Earlier on the stage, MAT Ceresit riders were very aggressive: Tomasz Kloczko won all three mountain sprints, and was in break with Piotr Przydzial (also MAT) and Grzegorz Rosolinski (Servisco) - virtual leader at that time. The three men had maximum lead of nearly 2 minutes, but with 20 kms to go they were joined by another three: Dainis Ozols (Latvia-MAT), Petr Herman (Czech-PSK Unit Expert) and Faat Zakirow (Moldavia-Lada), still having 1'15" on the peloton. But with 4 kilometres to the finish line, the last opportunists (Przydzial & Rosolinski) were caught, and the day ended in a small bunch sprint.
