"My doctor won't be too happy that I've raced," Hutchinson said.
Gilfillan, brother of international rider Ceris Gilfillan, who had finished seventh in the women's European Under-23 time trial championship, upheld family honour with 1-03-13 to finish second to the former Cambridge University man Hutchinson.
In the women's 14-mile event world pursuit champion Yvonne McGregor (Team Alsager) had a 40 second winning margin over Scotland's Sally Ashbridge (Deeside Thistle), the British women's national 25-mile champion.
Top junior was Carl Dyson who managed to hold off the challenge from triathlete Peter Moon, who was just two seconds slower than Dyson. The 85 mile event held in Mentmore, Hertfordshire and was completed in a speed of over 26.5 mph, with many Elite category riders in the 56 man field. Speeds reached over 40 mph on the descent from the village, with the riders strung out in an echelon through Mentmore Park. After only six miles, three riders forged a significant lead. Manx International winner, Matt Stevens (Sigma RT), escaped with Olympic medallist Bradley Wiggins (Team Sport & Publicity) and Gary Baker (Anglia Sport). Their lead climbed to 57 seconds but as constant attacks from the bunch picked up the overall speed, they were re-captured at around the fifty mile point. Paul Crook was the key figure in the next break at 56 miles where his group of four broke clear. However it was almost inevitable that with a number of Elite Category Premier Series riders behind, that it would come together for the bunch gallop on the climb to Mentmore Village. With the bunch tightly spread across the road with 200 yards to go, the front riders stalled, jockeying for position, leaving the riders at the back hitting the brakes and in the wrong gear. Paul Crook saw the opportunity and took-off to win by a couple of bike lengths from Martin Ford and local rider Mike Jackson (CC Luton - Bandon Cleaning). There was early action from Murphy (Scotland), van Diessen (N-lands) and Clark (Team SW). At Raglan (26 km) there was a break by Quill (Team Keyne) and Kerkdijk (N-lands) which gained a lead of 1m 30s by the time the hill prime at Coldharbour was reached (57 km). The bunch remained intact passing through Raglan at 70 km in tough conditions: high temperature (26 degrees) and high humidity. The lead was down to 17s at the Horse and Jockey prime (82 km), but increased again to 35s at Llanfoist (86 km) where the leaders were joined by Berk and Lambrechts (N-lands). With the pace increasing as the stage reached its close, Lambrechts and Kerkdijk break away. At the beginning of the final climb through Llangattock, Lambrechts rides away to win by 2m 1s from Berk with last year's winner Alex Coutts (Scotland) a further 37s back and his fast finishing team-mate Murphy just 13s behind.
