Luckily the weather held off. This event has always been blessed by good weather. The riders lined up for the start with Dave Nie (Liphook R.T.), back to cycle racing after a number of years doing other things, positioning himself as the leading rider at the head of the field. The race sprung into action on the very first lap of the Ellen's Green circuit covered in 13 minutes when two riders Gary Baker (AngliaSport/Condor Cycles/Campagnolo) & Bruce Griffiths (In Gear R.T.) were just clear of the field. On the next lap Gary Baker had been joined by Mike Harrison (Tunstall Wheelers/Brian Rourke Cycles), Peter Dickason (Twickenham C.C./Evans/ Stairmaster) & Dave McMullen (Evans-Kona) who had a slight gap on the rest of the field. For laps 3,4,5 & 6 of this first circuit, Gary Baker, lapping at between 13 & 14 minutes, held a lone lead, which varied between 5 & 20 seconds. However on the final lap of Ellen’s Green the field finally brought back the lone leader & the field was together for the first time in the race. Onto the Walliswood circuit, which was to be covered twice, numerous riders tried to break away but with little success. However at the finish it proved to be a bunch sprint with Stephen Edwards (Steve Goff R.T.) just outsprinting Gary Baker with last year’s winner Colin Roshier (Team Quest/ The Bike Shop) close behind. At the prize presentation Stephen Edwards was presented with the Ken Warren Memorial Trophy donated by Tony Mills of Dauphin Sport from race organizer Brian Hone before being given a replica. The Meritorious Rider Award sponsored by International Cycle Components was presented to Dave McMullen (Evans-Kona).
