Carnegie Caulfield Road Race

AFL Park Kermesse, Waverley, August 25, 2001

84 riders braved near gale force winds at the tough 2.5km AFL Park circuit, and did so in slightly smaller fields than usual. The Victorian State Road Titles in Castlemaine attracted most of the elite riders, but the local Regional racing proved tough enough.

Obviously believing that the following day's State Title wouldn't test him, and with the early morning "Hell Ride" already under his belt, under 23 rider Simon Hurren was on the attack early from the A Grade bunch. He lead the pack for 25 minutes alone midway through the race before a steady chase closed the gap. Counter attacks from Josh Van der Veen and Harry Hendon kept the bunch under pressure until the 'three laps to go' mark, at which point Marcus Balscheit decided attack, and only five riders were strong enough to respond.

The five riders, lead by Carnegie Club Champion Kristjan Snorrason, finding his strength after his recent return from the Belgian Kermesse circuit, caught and dropped the SKCC rider. Choosing to attack on a slight incline just after the finish line, Ray Turner created the break he need to allow him a good win.

Coming second place, track star Shaun Collins gave a hint of his form to come, taking the spot from Geoff Whiter and Josh Van der Veen.

The B Grade race featured repeated early attacks by Mick Buckley and Paralympic Gold Medallist Peter Homann, before the peleton regrouped and stayed together for most of the race. Rob Licciardo, in heavy training for the National Championships on the Gold Coast, attacked with 10 minutes remaining in the race.

The combined efforts of Aaron Barbetti and newcomer Chris Newman managed to regroup the bunch. A strong counter attack just as Licciardo was caught brought back to the group allowed Mick Buckley to go clear again. HT egap he created looked to have the win sewn up, only the relentless bunch pushed on and whittled the gap down in the final head wind straight.

WIth the pack closing in, under 17 Australian Match Sprint Champion Shane Perkins demonstrated his phenomenal speed and caught the unlucky Buckley inches from the line. Third and fourth places went to Aaron Barbetti and Chris Newman.

C Grade had the days largest field, but many riders seemed content to follow wheels and try to hide from the wind. Marty Keane would have none of it and left the pack behind half way through the race. Danny Weatherley set off alone in pursuit, and slowly closed the gap to Keane.

With this capture happening five laps from the finish, and Keane dropped back to the bunch in exhaustion, Weatherley continued alone. While losing a little ground to Graham "Milo" Answerth who made a late attempt to bridge, Danny Weatherley recorded his first win at this level, in very good form. Milo, better known for his sprinting, held the bunch off for second, ahead of L Melven and John O'Sullivan.

Richard Eppinger, recently promoted from the Junior ranks, fought his way through the strong winds for over 35 minutes, before being brought back by the D Grade bunch. Aaron Moody tried to pick up where Eppinger had left off, but was left dangling off the front by the bunch until the wind up towards the finish line.

Billy Upston showed the youngsters a clean pair of wheels ahead of April Eppinger, another first timer in Lino La Sicleia, and Nigel King. The Juniors worked even turns into the gusting winds until an attack at the 'four laps to go' mark by Mitch Peart. His attack was followed by Peter Johnstone, Alex Smyth, Michael Downing and Amy Phillips. The quartet caught up and dropped Peart, crossing the line in that order.

Next weeks racing is the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club Road Championships, for Club members only, to be held at Modella over the hilly circuit.

Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club Championships

Illawarra, August 25, 2001

By Garry Doughty

The title of 'Caesars Illawarra Cycle Club 2001 Road Champion' fell upon the popular and unassuming Malcolm Haigh after a memorable victory at Huntley on Saturday, August 25. After being twice postponed due to gale force winds, officials were pleased to wake to perfect winter conditions for the re-scheduled Club Championship over 60km.

The A grade race was fast considering the fresh cross-winds. At the end of the first lap of three, Brendan Cato showed why he has been chosen to represent Australia at the World Junior Titles by launching a solo breakaway. When Haigh flew out of the bunch to join him, the ensuing chase fractured the bunch. Frank Tortorici, Neil Williams and Tim Morris were making some inroads with Adam Crowther, Dylan Forbes and Austin Pitman just behind them. Williams and Pitman cracked just as the second group made contact, leaving Tortorici, Morris, Crowther and Forbes to re-group and chase the lead duo. But Cato and Haigh were in excellent form due to recent solid training and worked well together. In the finish straight Haig was able to overpower his younger rival and take the coveted victory. Morris took the bunch sprint for third from Crowther and Tortorici.

The B grade race was a close affair with all riders evenly matched in ability. Andrew Stewart, Dave Russell, Jason Johnson and Adam Hotchkiss made several strong surges but were unable to break clear of the bunch. The experienced veteran Lionel Covington was covering everything. Russell was looking particularly dangerous until he snapped his chain with only ten kilometres left to race. The pace dropped as the line got closer and it looked like being a procession for the sprinters Johnson and Hotchkiss. But in a well-timed and assertive move Stewart took off with four kilometres to go and was simply too strong for the chasers. It was an emphatic and impressive victory for the hardworking rider. Phil Jones slipped off the front to claim second, with the sprinters fighting for third in a photo behind him, Johnson getting the nod from Covington and Hotchkiss.

A field 11 riders lined up for the C Grade event run over a distance of 45 kilometres (2 laps to Calderwood Road and back). Although the first lap was raced at a steady pace, it was fast enough to drop a few along the way. By the end of the first lap almost half the group was dropped.

The second lap saw a bit more action on the climbs and any gaps quickly closed up. Coming back over the steep side of Marshall Mount the second time reduced the group to just five riders with Ben Lohse leading Pat Delahunty, Mal Moss, Jeff Gray & Joe Pereira. These riders picked up the pace past Yallah TAFE to make sure the stragglers wouldn't get back on.

With five kilometres to go, the climb up to Hooker hill was tense. A move was anticipated at the drop down to the Y intersection, but none eventuated. At two kilometres to go Lohse attacked but Moss and Delahunty quickly jumped with him however Moss pulled his foot and Delahunty, hard on Moss's wheel, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory when he was forced off the road. Gray and Pereira chased hard all the way to the line but the race was going to be between Lohse and Moss with Moss getting it in a fast finish. Gray was third from Pereira fourth. Delahunty rolled across the line fifth.

There was only a small field for the D grade race but it was bolstered by the inclusion of Ali Ross riding as a under 17 women. It quickly turned out to be a three horse race between Ross, Max Baker and Eric Doughty. Try as they may none of the riders were able to get away from the others. On the last climb up to the railway bridge on Hooker hill the pace picked up but the three were still together. Ross saw that the moment was right and launched an attack as they rounded the corner. Try as they may Doughty and Baker could not bring her back and she rode the four kilometres to the finish crossing the line 13 seconds infront of the chasers to take out the under 17 womens championship. Doughty and Baker crossed the line together but the judges gave Doughty the nod and first place in D grade, Les Hewitt came in third.

Next week's race is the Club hillclimb championship. Riders will start at Byrong Park at 1pm, the event will be followed by a BBQ.

Murwillumbah ACC Road Race

Murwillumbah, August 25, 2001

By Phil Ruge

A cool and gusty wind greeted the 36 riders who turned out for this week's race over the Bald Mountain course. This is one of the regular race routes used by the Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club and like most of the other courses traverses the hills and small villages of the north western area of the Tweed Valley. The 55 kilometres of this particular course takes riders out to Bald Mountain before turning back across to Numinbah and then returning to the start and finish area at Dulguigan.

A Grade had a delayed start this week when John Kane blew a tyre on the start line. Good sportsmanship saw the next 2 grades start while the tyre was repaired so that John was not disadvantaged for the race. Once underway the 9 riders set to with attacks starting almost immediately. Despite the efforts of a number of riders none of these proved to be successful and the race came down to a sprint finish. First home was the ‘fast master' Andrew Blackmore with Dave Costanza second and Chris Ellem in third place.

The race was on from the start in B Grade with attacks coming thick and fast from the 9 contestants. The first real break came on the way into Bald Mountain with 3 riders going clear. The bunch chased hard and finally managed to get the escapees back by Numinbah. However the effort was too much for some and a smaller group of 6 riders were left for the homeward run into a testing headwind. At the finish Graham Harvey was too fast for the others and took a well deserved first place. Second home was Scott McConnell after a great ride with young Ben Mockridge in third spot.

A merry band of just 7 riders set off in C Grade at a steady pace. This didn't last for long however as the pace was pushed up to make the best of the tailwind on the outward leg. A number of riders launched attacks throughout the race but apart from ensuring a fast pace none were successful. The strong headwind slowed things up over the final few kilometres but the hard working Stuart Chambers read the conditions perfectly to launch a final attack with just kilometre to go. He quickly opened a workable gap on the other riders which he maintained to the finish line. Second home was the ‘old master' Lindsay Smith with Wilf Hubac picking up third place.

D Grade had a larger group of 11 riders including 4 women who set out at a constant pace. Once into the hills several riders were dropped as the pace began to take its toll. John Jurkovic launched himself off the front at Numinbah and quickly opened up a gap. Only 3 of the remaining riders were able to give chase which included Frank Schirmer, Gail Zinn and Tom Allen. They caught John at Chillingham and then settled in to work together towards the finish. However, John launched another attack with about a kilometre to go but couldn't hold off Frank Schirmer who used his strong sprint to take first place just ahead of John. The consistent Tommy Allen took third place whilst Gail was fouth on line and first woman home after another great ride.

Racing next week is the monthly handicap event over the full Tyalgum course with a prompt start at 2.00 pm from Dulguigan. All riders should register early to assist the handicapper.

Olympian trains with local riders

by Tony Horneman

Sydney 2000 Olympian Michelle Ferris joined 16 other Randwick Botany Cycling Club riders in their regular Sunday morning 90km training ride from Heffron Park, Maroubra to Waterfall and return. Ferris, who won a silver medal in the Sydney Olympics 500m Track Time Trial, used the Randwick Botany ride as part of her current training program. The club conducts training rides, for affiliated riders, each Sunday morning starting at Heffron Park car-park at 6.30am.

In club racing, Chris Rule set the pace in the A grade event at the weekly Randick Botany Cycling Club race held at Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 25 August 2001. A high-speed bunch sprint to the line saw Rule passed by David Stewart to claim first place in a time of 55 minutes 35 seconds, at an average speed over the 36km of nearly 40kmh. Third place went to Gerry Brophy followed close behind by Tony Iannacito.

The 15-rider 32km B Grade race featured a spectacular 4-rider breakaway comprising two Randwick Botany riders and two Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club riders. Kirk Purchase, from Easts, broke away early in the race, but was chased by Randwick Botany riders Chris White and Clive Hammerson. With 8km to go another Easts rider, John McKenzie joined the trio and the 4 riders worked together to maintain a 500m lead over the field. Hammerson led out in the final sprint, but Purchase and McKenzie stormed home to claim first and second place, respectively. Hammerson was third just ahead of Chris White. The winning time was 50 minutes 26 seconds.

Brad Lane and Robert Dickerson established a 200m breakaway half way through the 24km C Grade race and maintained the lead to claim first and second place respectively. An exciting bunch sprint for third place followed, with Easts rider Frank Conceicao proving too strong for the remaining 12 riders. Jeffrey Ginns finished just out of the placings. The winning time was 47 minutes 52 seconds.

Junior rider Michael Murdoch broke away in the first lap of the 20km D Grade event, and rode solo to the finish line in a time of 35 minutes 45 seconds. Murdoch's average speed was an impressive 34kmh, considering he rode the entire race on his own. Matthew Tabone rode well back in the D Grade bunch and claimed seconds place ahead of Paul Baker. Allan Abeni finished fourth.

The E Grade race was conducted over 16km with Andrew Pike claiming first place in a time of 33 minutes 47 seconds. Norman Jew was seconds with David Calleja third. Seventy-two-year-old Kevin Blanchfield finished fourth.

Fourteen junior riders lined up for two events starting with a 2km Time Trial which was won by Michael Murdoch, with Chris Young second and Mark Woodhouse third. The 10km Junior Handicap race was also won by Michael Murdoch with his brother Thomas Murdoch second and Chris Young third.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts club racing every Saturday at Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm. For more information please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307.

Gold Coast CATS CC

Criterium Burleigh Heads, Qld August 26, 2001

They say the best laid plans............! The plan for this Sunday's crit was the first Gold Coast Club Challenge, a competition where all riders from Coast clubs score points for their club, to determine an overall champion club for the day. However drenching rain early on Sunday morning, the first rain for months, meant that many riders stayed home, knowing that Burleigh turns into a slippery, dangerous circuit in the wet. What they didn't know was that by start time the circuit was drying out fast, so racing did go ahead, but the club challenge was postponed 'till another day when the fields will be bigger and the circuit drier.

Caution on the corners was the order of the day, and that caution carried over into the entire race with all grades seemingly content to ride as a bunch until the final sprint.

The A Graders were playing cat and mouse with 2 to go, but into the final straight Greg Pooley had stolen a 50 metre lead which he held to the line, in front of the fast finishing Jamie Seip and Daniel Newnham.

Brisbane riders Tony Wood and Tim Chiverton took the money in B Grade, while confusion in the C Grade bunch led to the unusual sight of a sprint at the bell, and another at the finish. John "Stretch" Mildenhall made sure that he didn't sprint a lap early, and just edged out Under 17 rider Corey Turnbull.

Kim MacLeod was not only the first lady in D Grade but first across the line as well when she flashed down the outside to beat Tom Allan, while Helen Griffiths had a smile on her face for the whole race as she took out E Grade.

The CATS Club has two great warm up races for interstate riders heading to Queensland for the National Club Championships in September. On Sunday September 9 is the 150k Darren Smith Cycle Classic, an Open race that honours the memory of the outstanding young CATS rider Darren Smith, who died tragically in 1992. The following Sunday, September 16, is the Darlington Park Kermesse on a tough and testing circuit at Ormeau.

Details of both races are available on the CATS web site at www.geocities.com/goldcoastcats/
