This course is 57.5 kilometres long and is one of the hardest on the club's race calendar with numerous short but steep climbs and plenty of rough narrow roads. The climbs often help to sort out the race with the last four occurring in quick succession within the final 15 kilometres of the course. Just 5 riders started in A Grade this week but set out at a quick pace despite a strong headwind. These riders were fairly evenly matched and although constantly pushing the pace they kept together until the finish. First across the line was Jeff Collier with Tony Brindle in second place. B Grade had 8 starters and these riders wasted no time in getting down to racing. The attacks started almost immediately and these took their toll as the group broke up once past Chillingham. Determined riding however saw 4 of the riders get together again after a further 15 kilometres of the race. Further attacks in Nobby's Creek stretched the group but they managed to come back together for a sprint finish. First home was Graham Harvey closely followed by a U19 rider from Bermuda, Tyler Butterfield with Peter Crompton taking third place. A slightly larger group of 9 riders contested the C Grade race. A number of attacks also featured in this event but none were successful until Robert Pommie went clear after Chillingham. Pommie's lead was never more than about 30 seconds but this was enough to keep him clear of the chasing bunch which slowed up somewhat after their passage through Nobby's Creek. This helped to ensure his win whilst Lindsay Smith's hard work throughout the race saw him take a well deserved second place with Wilf Hubac in third spot. D Grade had the largest group of the afternoon with 11 riders. Once again a reasonably quick pace and the testing headwind saw a rider in this group also go clear after Chillingham. John Jurkovic rode well to gradually increase his lead whilst the bunch behind him began to splinter as the chase began in earnest. John's lead was out to just on 1 minute by Nobby's Creek and this kept him clear to the finish. In the sprint for second place Frank Shirmer got up over a fast closing Stan Brims. Gail Zinn rode strongly in this race and showed her class by finishing well with the first bunch of chasing riders. Just 4 riders contested E Grade and the testing conditions played havoc with this group. By Chillingham 2 riders pulled away and this quickly became 1 as Happy upped the pace through the hills. His hard work saw him stay clear for the rest of the race to take the win with Kevin LeRoy finishing in second place. Racing next week is over the Bald Mountain course with a 2.00 pm start from Pat Smith Park, Dulguigan. The course is 800 metres long and has a slight rise and fall in gradient throughout its length. The weather was sunny but cool which made for very pleasant racing conditions. Commissaire Helen Vella issued special instructions to riders at the start line to ensure safe racing in the windy conditions. A and B Grades combined to race over 30 km or 15 laps of the tight Heffron Park criterium circuit. David Johanson broke away on the first lap and rode solo for 6 km until he was caught by the A/B Grade bunch. By this time several riders had dropped out due to the testing conditions. A grade riders powered away in the sprint to the finish, with Ross Chaffer, from the Manly Warringah club crossing first, followed by Phil Kelaher. The third A Grade place went to Duncan Crosby. B Grade place getters were Clive Hammerson and Kirk Purchase with David Johanson finishing third. Tony Horneman broke up the C Grade bunch in the third lap of the 12 lap or 24 km race. Brad Lane and Robert Dickerson stayed with Horneman and the trio stayed away from the main bunch for several laps. Lane and Dickerson powered away to fight out first and second place, while Horneman and Thomas Klemola from Sydney Cycling Club raced for third place. The final placing were Brad Lane first, Robert Dickerson in second place and Tony Horneman, third. Twelve riders lined up for the hotly contested D Grade 16 km race. Lindsay Monks was home first, followed by Chris Sroka and Neil Morris. A handicap race was conducted for the fifteen juniors who braved the windy conditions. U17 rider Chris Jenkins passing all riders to finish first, followed by Michael Murdoch and Robert Cater. Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts club racing every Saturday at Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm.
