Results and Reports for August 11-12, 2001AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Bill Lawrie Memorial Bill Lawrie MemorialQueensland, August 11-12, 2001The Sunshine Coast Cycling Club has been holding this two-day tour for a number of years now and it is a race that all Southeast Queensland riders look forward to competing in and spending the weekend in Noosa. There certainly are no complaints about the venue. The Tour consists of 3 stages being a 3km uphill time trial, 40km Criterium (Sat) and a 125km road race (Sun). The Tour is decided on points and not time so the playing field is evened out a bit if you can't time trial up a hill very well. The open senior field consisted of 25 riders with most of the sponsored teams represented. Flight Centre's Terry Nightingale won the first stage clocking an impressive time of 5:39 (31.8kph). There was a line up behind him though with Team Merida and LifeCycle riders eager to get to the Crit to get points from the bonus sprints and the finish. David Betts from Lifecycle had an excellent 2nd stage criterium ride and secured the majority of the points on offer for the sprints and the placed 2nd in the finish. Jonathon Cantwell won the criterium and Lifecycle riders had the unusual result of finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. This result ensured that David took the overall lead in the Tour. The road race proved to be very interesting and the result of the Tour hung in the balance until the final sprint. After numerous attacks in the opening 25km first lap of 5, a break of 5 riders went clear at around the 40km point. It included Terry Nightingale, Greg Campbell (both Flight Centre), Marty Pearce (Harding European), Michael O'Donoghue (Uni) and Jay Stockwell (LifeCycle). All teams were represented except for Merida but it seemed they didn't want to chase. The break was being driven by both the Flight Centre riders and aided by the sole Uni rider with the other two sitting on for the ride. Eventually the break broke up with only Terry Nightingale and Jay Stockwell surviving. If Terry won the race, he won the Tour so Jay had been sitting on him for every one of the 85km of that the break had been away. He then jumped Terry in the end and won the stage ensuring that his teammate David Betts won the Tour and took the $500 cash bonus. Terry ended up second by 1.5 points a tough day at the office! Conducted by the Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club, the race is now in its tenth year and honours a past member Darren McGurk, who was killed on a motorbike in 1990. Reigning champion Todd Parnell and 1999 winner Josh Simpson are both included in this elite field, Parnell in category 1 and Simpson in category 2. Parnell and Simpson have not featured highly in previous road races this season and are unlikely to upstage the more fancied chances in this race, which will be staged in the Moriarty/Thirlstane region. Categories One, Two and Three will feature a mass start contesting seven laps of a 16 km circuit, while categories Four, Five and Six will race over a flat 10 km circuit seven times. New State road champion Karl Menzies has been in good form and his experience in the Victorian based Tattersall's Cup Series throughout August will stand him in good stead for this event. Other main chances will include Bernard Sulzberger, Hobart's Steve Price, Mark Jamieson who is just back from the World Junior Track Championships in America and veteran performer Craig Price. Better known as the "Hadspen Flyer" - Price won a 20 km open handicap at Symmons Plains on the 4th of August against much younger opposition and should feature strongly in this event. Outside of category One, riders to watch will include Ryan Sullivan, Kharne Hammersley, Jarrod Burr, Dwayne Smith, Dane Leedham and John Kingston. All events will start and finish near the Moriarty Hall. There will be no shortage of good viewing areas, particularly near the Hall, Thirlstaene Golf Club or on Oppenheim's road. Jones entered the final lap trailing run away leader Matthew Goss by nine points and almost needing a miracle to win the ace at the Symmons Plains Raceway. The final sprint lap was worth 10 points and Jones also required Goss to miss a placing, a situation most unlikely given the fact there were only five bike riders left in the race. But Jones' breakaway tactic with four laps remaining worked and the extra effort by Goss in the closing stages caused him to tear a calf muscle and finish fifth in the bunch sprint and out of the final lap points. As it was Jones bobbed up to beat Goss by the smallest possible margin, despite the fact the latter had won four of the seven sprints on offer and finished second in two others to earn 26 points. Other highlights of the days racing was victory by Carrie Price and Alex Holden in their respective age and gender group categories and Nathan Jones' solid win in the Under 15 Boys. The combined Under 17 - Under 15 women's title went to pre-race favourite Kirby Piscioneri, who had a distinct advantage on her rivals. Held over an interesting and fast course in the Evandale district, Menzies was seeded as the No. 1 rider and performed accordingly, beating all previous times. Hobart's Stephen Price had to be content with second while another Southern based cyclist - Vern Reid - took the bronze medal. The week before Menzies had won the much tougher Road Race Championship. The inaugural Tasmanian Club Pairs Time Trial Championship was also held at Evandale with Hobart duo Stephen Rossendell and Steve Aitken claiming victory ahead of Paul Turner and Trevor Innes. Junior age championships were also held, with North-West Coast riders, Natasha Mapley, Brett Schnitzerling and Jason Bellchambers showing a clean pair of pedals in their respective titles. The Under 19 Mens Pairs title was won by Ryan Sullivan and Bernard Sulzberger, just ahead of Devonport team Jarrod Burr and Mark Jamieson, the latter only returning from the Junior World Track Championships in America three days prior to the State titles. A Grade was a race of attrition, with constant attacks from Crackles Cahill taking their toll, and as the race headed towards the two hour mark one by one the field got smaller. Eventually only three remained, with Riki Lanyon and Steve Rooney getting away from Cahill, to cross the line in that order. B Grade was the race of the Under 17's. Adam Tully and Ben Mockridge were both in the medals at the recent State Junior Road Championships, and they clearly showed why during this race. By mid-way they were off the front together, and the further the race went the larger their lead became. Tully was looking strong and smooth on the hill each lap, and on the last time up he still had plenty in reserve, crossing the line ten metres in front of Mockridge, and more than two minutes in front of the bunch. Brad Payne is the State Under 17 Criterium Champion and he took fourth, just outsprinted for third by Iain Russell. A great result for the juniors. Paul Reid was the victor in C Grade, but the ride of Denis Cain to finish second was inspirational. Two months ago he was hit by a car, and suffered a fractured back among other injuries. This was his first race since his accident, and although not in his accustomed first place in C Grade he showed that it won't be long before he's off the front again making them all suffer. Under 15 rider Joel Davis has been on the sick list for the past week, but he still had enough in hand to win the D Grade sprint from Bob Mockridge, who spent more than half the race chasing to get back on after dropping his chain in the first lap. Sunday August 26 is the Gold Coast Club Challenge at Burleigh, and the next Darlington Park kermesse on September 16 will present a new challenge, as it will be run in the reverse direction. Memorial Two Day Tour has been an event staged by St. George Cycling Club for more than fifty years in honour of a St. George cyclist killed during World War Two. It has been a major social event of the year and many long and lasting friendships have been made whilst staying overnight on the Saturday night. (according to our records, only one divorce). The Graham Bennie has proven to be a great race over the years and this year was no exception. The first stage - a 45 kilometre pedal in brilliant sunshine from Menangle Park to Yerrinbool was a tough and demanding start to the race with Razorback and the constant climbing to Yerrinbool making it difficult for all concerned. Enzo Binotto and David Hines started the watches on the first stage with the scratch bunch departing 34 minutes later in pursuit of victory. But it was Christine Riakos that powered to her first stage win off the 16 minute mark, crossing the line just ahead of Peter McRorie with Allan Wallesch third. The block bunch, consisting of Warren Scott, Troy Glennan, Jason Pearce, Adam Lucas, David Treacy and Brian King did well to drop a minute and a half on the scratch bunch while Geoff Skaines powered his way along the highway for eighth place. Jono Davis outsprinted his scratch bunch colleagues to gain fastest time for the first stage. Christine Riakos was at it again in the second stage to Bundanoon and this time streeted the field to win by a comfortable margin and set up a good chance for overall victory. There was great team riding in this stage, especially by the block bunch who fell after just several kilometres from Yerrinbool and combined with scratch to chase down many of the cyclists ahead. A special mention of George Diniakos, David Treacy, Brendan Dunne and Big John Ciofani who worked well all the way to the finish line. Jono Davis once again claimed fastest time honours but it was Troy Glennan who put up the performance of the weekend by crashing and finishing with the scratchies. After a few changes to the handicaps overnight for the final two stages, with some riders gaining a little more start and some penalised for their strong showings, it was down to serious business once again, especially with the 50.6 kilometre stage from Bundanoon to the top of Aerodrome Hill always playing a major role in recent tours. Despite penalised a group for her two previous wins, it was once again Christine Riakos that powered to her third consecutive win over an aggressive Michael Short while Blake Field, who pedalled his heart out off the same mark as Riakos, to claim third place, just 16 seconds in arrears. Matthew Hood, another great young cyclist, was in good form to finish fourth, just ahead of the very consistent veteran Allan Wallesch, who moved into second place overall with his fifth place. Jono Davis was powerful in the race for time honours and crossed the line six seconds ahead of Dan Smith and Chris Sutton who were just ahead of Nicholas Wood. Troy Glennan, Jason Pearce and David Treacy performed exceptionally well when elevated to the scratch bunch but a real strong performance along the road was from Katie Brown who raced much of the distance on her own after clearing away from her group in pursuit of stage victory. Katie finished in 18th place, 1 minute 33 seconds behind Riakos. Even though Christine Riakos had won three stages she held just a lead of just ninety second over Alan Wallesch with Peter McRorie and Michael Everitt also in contention for major honours with Riakos needing to catch the trio to basically ensure victory in the final 59 kilometre stage back to Menangle Park. Conditions were ideal with the slightly larger groups moving along the old highway with the gaps narrowing constantly. Big Steve Wooldridge was powering on the stage along with big Troy and the rest of the scratchies but the race was more towards the middle and front markers with Riakos chasing down the main rivals. Disaster struck for Michael Everitt when he punctured on the outskirts of Picton, with just 15 kilometres remaining when he seemed certain of a top five placing. The entire race field seemed to be on Razorback at the same time and with Brad Dore, Dick Paris, Carlo Ghisolfi, Luke Bingham and Scott Mills powering along with the front runners Wallesch and McRorie, the result was always in the balance. Brad Dore out powered Dick Paris to take the stage win just ahead of Bingham, Wallesch, McRorie, Ghisolfi and company and with the clock ticking all eyes centred on whether Riakos would finish close enough to claim the title. Amongst the large group of cyclists, Christine crossed the line just 1 minute 24 seconds in arrears of Alan to win by a mere 21 seconds while Peter McRorie finish third and Katie Brown fourth just ahead of the good pedalling of Alex Wasson. Bard Done was fifth ahead of the back marker trio of George Diniakos, John Ciofani and Brad Dunne while Blake Field put up a tremendous ride for 10th place. Jono Davis won the final gallop for time honours to record 4 hours 58 min 27 secs for the 199 kilometres and was just a few seconds ahead of Chris Sutton and Dan Smith. There were many outstanding performance, especially from the younger riders right the way through to our elder statesman, Carlo Ghisolfi. The final dinner presentation at Hill Street, attended by close to 100 people, was a great finale to a brilliant weekend and now the club is already talking about a summer tour. The planning has already commenced. History of the Graham Bennie Two day Tour:The race has been staged from and too various destinations. The very first year, thirty cyclists raced from Penshurst Park to Wattle Farm at Bargo (lucky devils did not have to encounter Aerodrome Hill) but did do it in one stage each way finishing back at Penshurst Park on the Sunday afternoon. The second year the race was staged once again to Wattle Farm but in 1950 the guest house had been burnt down and Ron Mills, yes father of Bruce and grandfather of young Scott, suggested a change - a race from Penshurst Park to a cousin that owned a hotel at Blackheath. The fog on the mountain made racing pretty scary on the decent and it was not the last appearance to the Mountains. Several years later the club raced from Campbelltown to Springwood and in the fifties also ventured from Shelley Beach, Cronulla to Wollongong and even as far south as Kiama with the race concluding back at Shelley Beach. But the Graham Bennie has had a much greater affiliation with the Southern Highlands with the race overnighting at Kangaroo Valley, also at Fitzroy Falls in the fifties at an uncle and aunt of John Brennan, who is now the President of Sutherland Club, and much later at Bowral. However, the most common overnight location has been the Bundanoon Hotel. Having worn out our welcome at the Guest Houses of Bundanoon, I would suggest that atleast 35 of the 54 races staged over the years have enjoyed the hospitality of the old pub. The race has always been a handicap event - sometime just one stage each day, though over later years anything upto three stages a day, but the two stages this year appeared to be a pretty good affair. The concept of the race has always been the same - to determine the race based on the handicap. The winner is determined by adding the watch time of the various stages together, although at one stage of the Graham Bennie, it was run on a point score and percentage basis dependant on the number of starters in each stage. It was nightmare and on some occasions took several days to work out the outcome, even with less than 30 starters. Despite the unquestionable strong feeling that the club members of the day would have had during the inaugural event in 1948, there is little doubt that the Graham Bennie reached the ultimate pinnacle this year with a record attendance of more than seventy starters and 110 people on tour. It was also great to see some of the stalwarts of the club supporting the event. Dick Paris, who must have contested more than 30 of the events and Stewart Boyce, who notched up his 15th consecutive appearance. Also great to see Geoff Skaines, a 76 Olympian return to the fold with Sharon, all the way from the Gold Coast and to make his mark on the 2001 event and Alan Brooks, another rider that had already made his mark on the event in the seventies. Also Martin Guy, a former cyclist with the club and John Lovick, the burglar from Orange that stole a handicap win at Oatley this year and the other members of Orange that attended the race, we hope you enjoyed yourselves. Orange colours were that prevalent that it made Lenneke feel like she was back at home. Kit Rumsey along with club president, Phill, have been regulars on the race since the late fifties when they accompanied their fathers on the race and be amazed by how silly their fathers looked when they seemed to consume countless numbers of brown ale. The drinking stakes in comparison with previous years was a much tamer affair but the two days of socialising and pedalling could not have been faltered. The weather also played its part for the second consecutive year and no doubt a contributing factor the success of the race, especially compared to some of the days experienced in the past. 1971, in which Dick Paris fell and broke his collarbone on the famous Picton corner, could have been the coldest and wettest Saturday of the tourâs history. It was that cold and wet which drove three cyclists, that will remain nameless, to huddle together in a telephone box just on the outskirts of Moss Vale in a bid to get warm (or that what they told us anyway). Our thanks to so many people that assisted with the race. Stewart Boyce, who measured the course, attended the hotel the weekend before to ensure that all was well prepared and paid the bills, to Kit Rumsey, Bob Hartshorne and Laurie Fitzpatrick, all former stars of the race (Kit was a previous winner), put on a great barbecue at Bundanoon with the assistance of Barbara Bates, and thanks to Jerry, Bruce & Margaret, Rod Price, John Field, Jeff Barrett, Kit, Bob and Laurie, Anthony Flynn, John Field for their corner stewards, and anyone that we have missed, Peter Mounser for driving the truck and Andrew Baxter as the bus driver and sag wagon of the tour, not too mention any of those people that assisted in getting the placegetters - it was not easy. A special thanks to Brett Dutton and Dan Smith for also generating much interest with the race. Congratulations to all concerned. This year was an exception, the fine, warm and windless conditions almost made it bearable. Almost! There were 74 starters spread over 11 bunches, with limit having a start on the scratchies of 24 minutes. The scratch bunch consisted of four riders from four different clubs. Two of the top juniors in the state, Luke Dale from Eurobodalla and Brendan Cato from Illawarra, new Trek sponsored rider Kevin Poulton and the stalwart of the scratch bunch Richard Vollebregt from Southern Highlands. The scratch men rode as if they were possessed, they caught the block bunch that had started two minutes in front of them after only 10km, by then the block riders had already caught the three minute bunch. A couple of kilometres later they also had the four and a half bunch. Meanwhile at the front of the race the 18 minute bunch had caught the two bunches in front and were the leaders, but their lead was quickly being reduced by the 15 minute bunch. By the turnaround the 15 minute bunch had slimmed down to five riders representing four clubs. Illawarra had two riders in Mal Moss and Jeff Gray with Fred McClelland from Goulburn, Gail Johnston from Eurobodalla ad Pat Gleeson from Macarthur. At the turn they still had three minutes of their three and a half minute gap to the 11:30 bunch. Just after the turn they caught Ian Stone, the sole survivor of the 18 minute bunch. On the run back to the turnaround at the start line the scratchies caught all the bunches infront up to the nine minute bunch. After they turned and headed out for the final six kilometres they went up a steep little climb which blew the large group apart only leaving the scratchies, block riders and one or two of the other riders. With three kilometres to go they caught the remnants of the 11:30 bunch. That only left five riders in front. Gray had dropped off the other four and looked like he may get caught. The finish would have to be the most difficult in the State, 300m up a steep climb, definitely one that suits the stronger riders. The youngest rider in the front group, McClelland showed the others a clean set of wheels on the ascent to the line. Moss came in second from Johnston and Gleeson. One minute twenty seconds after the first riders, Stone crossed the line with Poulton, four seconds later, just managing to pass Gray on the line for sixth place. Poulton took out fastest time in a course record of 1:07:54. After the points were allocated Illawarra's Alan McClelland is still the clear leader on 28 followed by club-mate Patrick Delahunty in equal fifth place on 17 points. With one race still to go Poulton cannot be beaten in the fastest time competition while the Club championship is going to go down to the wire with seven points up for grabs and Caesar's Illawarra only leading Goulburn by two points. The next Interclub is at Southern Highlands on September 15, entries close on September 1. Next week's race is the postponed Club Championship. Members are reminded that it is a 1pm start. Volunteers are required to marshal. After 18 laps of the 2km circuit, Anthony Spurgeon from Team Caravello won the A Grade race in a time of 57 minutes 7 seconds. Second was Phil Kelaher followed by Chris Rule. A large field competed in the B Grade 32km event that saw a 200m 4-rider breakaway mid-way through the race. Randwick Botany U17 rider Chris Jenkins and two others bridged the gap to bring the group back together. Mark Robertson made a solo breakaway with 6km to go but the B Grade bunch worked together to catch Robertson for a group sprint to the line. John Kenny crossed first in a time of 50 minutes 24 seconds. Second place went to Garry Oliver with Jayson Brenton in third place. The C Grade race was conducted over 28km with a high average speed of 37kmh. Frank Conceicao crossed the line first in a time of 45 minutes flat. Ross Mackay claimed second place with Nick Rule third. Under 15 junior rider Keegan Aitchinson won the 20km D Grade event in a time of 36 minutes 57 seconds. This is the first time Aitchinson has won the Senior D Grade race. Neil Morris came second with Mark Shying third. Andrew Pike won the E Grade 14km race in a time of 32 minutes with Luke Davison second and Norman Jew third. Randwick Botany juniors Chris Jenkins, Robert Cater and Luke Cridland practiced their Team Time Trail skills in a 14km demonstration event. The team is preparing for the State Championships at Calga in September 2001. Twenty-five junior riders competed in three events. A Grade results: Liam Fletcher, Michael Murdoch and Thom Murdoch. B Grade: Chris Young, Peter Vea, Thom Richards. C Grade: Tyrone Davies, Raphael Rosse, Nicholas Mellick. The next Randwick Botany Cycling Club race will be conducted at Heffron Park on Saturday 28 July 2001. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm. This route covers a distance of 55 kilometres from Dulguigan out to Bald Mountain before returning to the start/finish area via Upper Crystal Creek. Undulating roads characterise this course with a number of short climbs thrown in for good measure. An added attraction this week was a very rough dirt track detour around a new bridge being constructed on Upper Crystal Creek Road! Both A and B grades were combined this week to give a total of 15 starters for this event. The pace was on from the start with numerous attacks throughout the race. Craig Reston was one of the riders prominent in these attacks but determined riding by the rest of the group managed to keep the race together until Boat Harbour on the way back when Ben Mockridge from B Grade opened a small gap on the others. He was quickly joined by Graham Harvey (also B Grade) and these two riders swapped turns to stay clear of the group to the finish. Graham Harvey won the sprint to the line with Ben in second spot. They were closely followed by Rob Lyte claiming first place for A Grade with Craig Reston second and then the Îfastest Masters 1 sprinter in Australia' Andrew Blackmore claiming third place for B Grade after several months away from racing. A total of 13 riders contested C Grade this week. After a quick start to the race the pace settled somewhat but once the hills were reached a number of attacks stretched the bunch out. However, no riders were prepared to give in and after some spirited chasing the bunch was together again for the run into Upper Crystal Creek. The pace remained fairly constant on the way back to the finish line and in the ensuing sprint the Îold master' Lindsay Smith took first place with Kevin Butcher second and the hard working Stuart Chambers in third place. An unfortunate fall early in the D Grade race saw Îlocal legend' Jim Higgins and Murray McGregor sidelined and split the bunch up for this event. Those riders caught behind the fall worked well together to eventually catch the front runners by Crystal Creek on the return journey. This smaller group stayed together to the end where Frank Schirmer showed a clean pair of heels to take first place with Stan Brims second and an Under 19 rider Joel Brown taking a well deserved third place. A small group of just 6 riders contested E Grade. Despite a steady pace 2 riders went clear on the run into Bald Mountain and built up a good lead to remain away for the rest of the race. These riders shared the work until the finishing straight where Happy got the lead to be first over the line with Jeff Finnigan claiming second place. Racing next week is over Nobbys Creek on Saturday 18 August 2001 with the Banana Festival Criterium being held on Sunday 19 August 2001. Entries for the criterium close on Tuesday 14 August 2001 with late entries only after this date. All Murwillumbah riders are requested to be in attendance from 7.00 am on the Sunday morning to help set up for this event.
