Results and Reports for August 4-5, 2001AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Ti Sports/Easton Elite Road Series Ti Sports/Easton Elite Road SeriesAugust 5, 2001Challenge of the Great Divide Sunday the 5th of August and like most Sundays for the past few weeks it's race day, a time to "rip some legs off" .This was stage 4 of the 5 stage TI Sports/Easton Elite Road Series .The business end with only one stage left afterwards to decide the minor placing's .Merida/Astra already looked set to take out the Teams Classification leading on 695 points over Harding European on 230 points , but also held the top three placing's on the individual leaders board. The race began in the small township of Lowood about an hour west of Brisbane in somewhat foggy but warm conditions and to the bemusement of the locals collecting their morning paper from the news agent .The bunch ambled along for the first 600m under neutral conditions ,the flag went down and attacks began .The first serious break of nine riders went down the rode after 20km with most teams represented and none posing a threat to the overall classification there was no reaction from the main field . The gap soon opened to a 2 minute lead ,no thanks to the main field taking the first of two wrong turns at unmanned intersections . By the second at 75km the gap was 5 minutes and still increasing .Two riders ,Johno(from Uni) and Marcel(Life Cycle) found the pace too hot in the break and were swept up, cracked ,and now bound to domestic team duties feeding and carrying water bottles for their teamates. Marty (Harding European) another burnt out mess from the hot pace of the breakaway decided to wait for the safety and shelter of the main field. It was an unlucky place to be caught just before a climb as he soon found out. The bunch was settled like at cat about to pounce on it's prey, each rider preparing themselves for the first climb of the day at 86km. A 6km climb at a solid tempo sorted the field into single file almost like ants weaving their way back to their nest ,gaps soon formed as two more from the break were caught toward the top of the climb .The main field now reduced to about twenty unaware of the scenic views of the valley to the left and the roar of Harley's passing on the right yet totally engrossed on Andy Stewart(Watling & Roche) who went on the attack .The attack was futile , covered by most of the series leaders and he resigned himself to wait for the finish in Crows Nest(35km north of Toowoomba). The break was now three riders at 4 minutes including two members of the Merida/Astra team Craig Saunders ,Shem Guthrie and Nathan Waddell(Hamilton Pine Rivers) ,there was an urgency for the other teams to organise a chase or the race was over .It was a fast finish to Crow Nest ,a slight ascent with the slightest of tale winds the riders travelled at an average of 55-60km/h for the final 10km . The break was in sight with 3km but had a comfortable lead to stay away .Nathan Waddell won ,the time trialist proving too strong had ridden everyone off his wheel on the climb ,found his rhythm and continued on to the finish .Shem and Craig staying away finished second and third whilst Bart Duraj(also from Merida/Astra) won the awesome bunch gallop to hopefully secure a win in this years series with no changes to the leaders board. Over all it was a very well run race ,though perhaps with a little more public involvement we could really give people something to talk about until the following year on our return. Although there were thirty four starters the numbers were heavily in favour of the back markers with twelve riders starting off block. The limit bunch of Les Hewitt and Chris Reeve gave it their best but they couldn't maintain the gap to the bunch behind and were caught at the end of the first of three laps. Peter Vessel rode away from his co-markers and was in the lead until almost the end of the second lap. The four scratch riders had their work cut out for them in closing the three minute gap to the block bunch, but they didn't give up with Brendan Cato and Tim Morris riding very strongly. As usual the sixteen minute bunch was working well with the work being evenly shared by Patrick Delahunty, Ben Lohse, Jeff Gray, Mal Moss and Garry Doughty. Unfortunately Alan McClelland found the pace on the climbs a bit too hot and lost contact but to his credit he never gave up and finished the race strongly. Teegan Makowski also rode strongly but found the bunch a little too strong for her at this point in time. The nineteen minute bunch started with six riders but due to a puncture to Barry Neall and the pace by Adam Hotchkis and Jason Johnson it ended up just with those two riders. They rode the race of their life and closed the 3 minute gap to the bunch infront almost by themselves, catching them at Yallah TAFE heading home on the last lap. Ben Lohse was able to go with them on the climb up Hooker hill with Delahunty about 100m behind. Although there were twelve riders in the block bunch the lions share of the work was being done by Adam Rourke and Hardy Lohse. Frank Tortorici and Brian Joyce were also riding strongly. They had the leaders in sight from the top of Hooker hill and the pace kicked up another gear. The remnants of the sixteen minute bunch were swept passed just after the 'Y'. They were now in pursuit of Delahunty and the three leaders. Delahunty just wouldn't give in and pushed it all the way to the finish only to be caught with 400m to the line. Johnson led the sprint out but Hotchkis came over the top and Ben Lohse came in third. Tortorici led out the big group finish and he was never headed to the line winning by half a wheel to Rourke. Hardy Lohse and Marcus Arnold rounded out the top seven. Cato never let up and took out fastest time in 1:24:47, Morris came in 4 seconds later. Next weekend is the Nowra leg of the Interclub series so there is no local race. The race starts at 2:15pm from the bowling club in Kangaroo Valley. The 55 kilometres of this race include 3 of the most challenging climbs on the ClubÕs race calendar in Bald Mountain and Tyalgum Hill and these often play a major role in the outcome of the event. The out and back structure of this race also gives riders the opportunity to check on the progress of their opponents and adjust their efforts accordingly. A total of 32 riders were divided into 7 groups for this event with limit followed by groups at 10, 15, 19, 21 and 24 minutes respectively and the scratch bunch off at 27 minutes. Some spirited riding by the early groups saw them make good progress despite the roads still being somewhat damp and slippery following a few showers of rain earlier in the day. Their good work saw them still away by the time the hills were encountered on the outward leg of the race. However the faster riders were not to be outdone and they gradually began to pick up some of the earlier starters on the return climb of Bald Mountain. This group continued to pick up riders through Chillingham and on the road back towards Murwillumbah. The fast pace of this ever enlarging group was too much for some riders who were left to make their own way back to the finish line. With only 5 kilometres left to race the main bunch was basically together again apart from a couple of riders from the limit and 10 minutes groups who were still ahead at this point. A valiant effort by Stuart MacPherson from the 10 minute group saw him hold on to win the race by a matter of metres only at the finish line! Second home was Craig Reston (scratch bunch) with Jeff Collier from chopping block third, Graham Harvey (21 minute group) fourth and Ian Walker also from the scratch bunch in fifth spot. Craig Reston also claimed fastest time for the race. Next SaturdayÕs race is over the picturesque Crystal Creek course and is a mass start event for each grade. Twenty-three Randwick Botany junior riders took part in a program of 21 events in excellent riding conditions around the tight Heffron Park circuit. Randwick Council cleaned the 2 km track prior to the event to provide a clean circuit for the riders. The premier U17 Keith Harris Memorial Elimination Trophy provided some exciting racing in the all-in event. All riders started together and the last 3 riders at the end of each lap were eliminated from the race. The surviving three riders were Warren Scott from St George in first place, Phillip Stokes from Penrith Panthers second and Chris Jenkins from Randwick Botany Cycling Club in third place. Scott also won the U17 Men A Grade 18km Scratch Race and Point Score. New riders Liam Fletcher and Adam Hall from Manly Warringah were placed second and third in the U17 Men B Grade 16km Scratch race. First place went to Alex Bird from Canberra. Two Australian Champions featured in the field of ten U17 Women riders. Rebecca Borgo from Illawarra and Megan Windsor from Bathurst were placed first and second in the U17 Women 16km Scratch race. Third place went to Melinda Harris from Mudgee. Tyler McLachlan from the Southern Cross club won the U15 Men A Grade 16km Scratch and Point Score races. Fourteen-year-old McLachlan said he rode alright and was happy that his training has paid off. His aim is to be Road Race National Champion and to win a place in the Australian 2008 Beijing Olympic Team. "One day I hope to win a stage in the Tour de France and even the yellow and green jerseys", McLachlan added. Megan and Sean Dunn traveled from Dubbo to participate in the carnival and were rewarded with a win in the U11 and U13 events, respectively. Randwick Botany rider Raphael Rosse won the U9 4km Handicap race ahead of Phillip Arias from Bankstown Sports Club and Scott Harding from the Southern Cross club. The A Grade field was bolstered by the addition of the Australian Institute of Sport Under 23 squad (including Sydney Olympian Brett Lancaster), in Melbourne for the mid week Tattersalls Cup Series; qualifying races for the up-coming Herald Sun Tour. The Balance Clothing Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club was fortunate to be able to present our newest World Champion, Mark French, to the riders and spectators. Mark was winner of the Match Sprint and a member of the winning Australian Olympic Sprint team in last weeks Junior Worlds in Colorado Springs. Mark was taking a well earned rest from racing today, but his older brother Luke would fly the family flag in B Grade. With the AIS boys on the start line, A Grade promised to be a hard and fast race. The pace was on from the start, with Jonny Clarke (recently confirmed to the Australian Junior Worlds Road Team for Portugal) going clear with two of the inform AIS squad David Pell (Fastest Time in last weekends Melbourne to Ballarat Handicap) and Caleb Manion (winner of the first Tatts Cup race on Wednesday). The peloton kept the break in sight, both groups riding at very high speed, before the gap began to reduce around the 40 minute mark. Two of Carnegie's in-form riders, Michael Gill and Geordan Murray (winner of the Melbourne to Ballarat Handicap) jumped across the gap, and the now 5 man group would stay away to the finish. Clarke lead out strongly from the final corner, but faded in the last 100m. A good win went to Geordan Murray, from Ben Jackson, Pell and Gill. Most of the B Grade field failed to notice Richard England slip off the front alone early in the race, in the confusion as the A grade field passed the bunch. The Blackburn rider managed to hold off the disorganized bunch for over 40 minutes until strong turns of pace from Ken Ford, Peter Homann and Steve Hickey brought him back in sight of the bunch. The unlucky England was caught at 3 laps to go, and the fancied sprinters began to look around for good wheels. Today they would be taken by surprise by a ‘withering' attack on the descent before the final corner from yours truly; and with a 20 meter break out of the last corner, the sprinters were racing for second! An increasingly rare road win for me; Darren Cathie was best of the rest ahead of Bryan Wilkins and Bill Murray. The C Grade race was characterized by repeated unsuccessful breakaway attempts. More surprising was that no-one came forward to claim 4th place in a tight bunch sprint. There was no doubt over the first three places, with Nick Gibson taking a good win from Perry Johnston and Stan Thomas. Small fields in D and E Grade due to the Ararat Junior Tour this weekend. The C Grade win went to Rob Doyle ahead of VIP license holder and State Schools Novice Champ Chris Honey, Ashley Morris and Sally Robbins. E Grade was a family affair Shuey's versus Friend's. Damal Shuey and Natalia Friend crossed the line 50 meters ahead of Ben Shuey and Lisa Friend. It was the second in a two race points score series. Todays event was held as a points race comprising of 2 intermediate sprints and double points for the finish. All races were hotly contested especially B and C grades containing large fields. Unfortunately A grade was down in numbers due to the 4th Queensland TI Sports Road Series race but those who were there found the pace from Masters competitors Dave Constanzo and Craig Reston too hot. These 2 rode away with Craig edging out Dave on the line for the win with Nick Butcher with a gallant solo ride for 3rd place. The sprinters didn't have it all their own way in this type of event not being able to save their firepower for the final dash to the line but having to conserve their energy for the 3 sprints during the race. D grade was won in convincing form by Rob Payne. He also took the overall point score. B grade stayed together for all the race with all attempted breaks being brought back. Jim Burke appeared to be looking after the eventual winner and point score winner, Geoff Willmott as he yelled encouragement to him as they crossed the line for the final sprint where Jim won, and Geoff got second to take the money. Dale Arnold won C grade in convincing form. Held over an interesting and fast course in the Evandale district, Menzies was seeded as the No. 1 rider and performed accordingly, beating all previous times. Hobart's Stephen Price had to be content with second while another Southern based cyclist - Vern Reid - took the bronze medal. The week before Menzies had won the much tougher Road Race Championship. The inaugural Tasmanian Club Pairs Time Trial Championship was also held at Evandale with Hobart duo Stephen Rossendell and Steve Aitken claiming victory ahead of Paul Turner and Trevor Innes. Junior age championships were also held, with North-West Coast riders, Natasha Mapley, Brett Schnitzerling and Jason Bellchambers showing a clean pair of pedals in their respective titles. The Under 19 Mens Pairs title was won by Ryan Sullivan and Bernard Sulzberger, just ahead of Devonport team Jarrod Burr and Mark Jamieson, the latter only returning from the Junior World Track Championships in America three days prior to the State titles.
